Steve Kerr went to Zona, that would've been the equivalent of expecting Larry Brown to leave the Pistons for us after they beat the Lakers in the Finals

Don't know what the consensus is, but I'm seeing a lot of people lauding the Barnes hire. I just don't get it. He may be fine for Tenn. He had clearly run his course at Texas and stagnated. I'm not so sure id be as gung ho about this hire as I'm seeing some folks.

Marshall would be an idiot to take Bama. He can land a big gig if he keeps it up for a couple more years. Maybe he realizes that this group he's had at WSU is done and is worried about falling back into typical mid major status.

Barnes to UT makes sense, but feels like a Tubby to Minnesota type hire.

Kinda funny how a coach who didn't come here because of expectations, competition and replacing a guy who went to 5 tournaments is about to jump in for rick barnes. Money talks I guess.

Yeah I don't get the Marshall to Bama stuff. He's at the point where he could just about have any job. Bama, while they have a ton of money, isn't really a significant step up imo.

Marshall going to Bama would be purely for money. The Wichita State program has reached a point where they can pay a decent amount, like Gonzaga & VCU. The facilities at Bama are not that great. The program that would be worth going to would be Texas. Both are football schools, but Texas has better facilities and a better recruiting base, as well as a better overall basketball tradition. You can get all the money in the world, but you won't be successful unless you have some inherent advantages (mainly facilities, recruiting base, and tradition). Only a few programs have all 3. Bama has none of the them.

A lower tier SEC job is not a step up from Wichita. You are basically competing to come in second to Kentucky every year at a school that is 100% about football

Its a step up for recruiting and obviously money. Aside from that I don't think its a significant step up.

Dammit I don't want Shaka to leave VCU. It's going to happen sooner or later, the man's not going to stay at a mid-major forever, but he's got a hell of a run going here.

I doubt he leaves any time soon...he has it made if you think about it.

He has a team that plays in a bad conference full of guys that couldn't make it at/in to other schools.

Just making the tourney to them is huge...and he gets paid to be mediocre.

Sounds like Herb part II

the act of winning?

I'm not a fan of his personality or the fact that he was afraid to come here, but his resume is pretty flawless

and it's not like he has a reputation of being run out of town

yeah i'm really bummed. one of the best things about richmond that made me feel at home is the kickass basketball culture that's particularly tied to VCU and Shaka Smart. The game atmosphere at the Siegel Center is phenomenal.

oh gimme a fucking break. He turned us down 4 fucking years ago. time to get over the butthurt. Since then, he also turned down UCLA, Maryland, Wake, Marquette, and Illinois.

I hoped to hell he would have stayed at VCU, but Texas is on a completely different level in terms of potential. It sucks ass as a Richmond resident, but I get it.

Made the Final Four in 2011 on a great run with Anthony Grant's players

Since then 2-4 in the NCAA tourney, including a loss to Stephen F. Austin

Gimmick systems usually don't work out quite as well in major leagues like the Big 12. It may though. Definitely think he's an upgrade over Barnes at this point in their careers.

i'm not butthurt over him turning us down. i love gott. i'd say gott's been more successful than smart over the past 4 years, to boot (but it can easily be debated otherwise).

but that won't stop me from pissing in shaka's cheerios

I think a relevant question to all this is: when is someone going to come calling for Bobby Lutz? I doubt he's going to stick around here as an assistant forever. Don't want to see him go but I think he'll get another shot at head coach somewhere sooner or later.

Feel sorry for 'Bama. He's not a very good coach, I guess at least there nobody really cares about basketball so he's got a chance to try shit out and maybe figure it out. He could be successful, but I don't think he's got either the Xs and Ox knowledge or the recruiting acumen necessary to be a great college coach. You've got to have at least one of those.

^ He was a great coach for the Mavs. Would/should have won an NBA title if not for D Wade going all-world and some horrible officiating in Game 3.

Apparently he also has some really strong AAU ties in Texas. He's a former NBA Player/Champion with the Spurs, successful coach, young, and has good AAU connections. It's a risk just because he hasn't coached college before, but I think its a pretty good hire.

Has this transition ever worked? Haven't really thought about it. I'm talking coaching NBA only then college. Guys like Larry Brown, Pitino, Cal, etc.. don't count. And yes, Sid is why I'm bearish (no homo).

Fred Hoiberg was Director or Basketball Operations (or something like that) for the T-wolves before he came back to coach his alma mater.

That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Its tough because majority of coaches would move up to the NBA...not down. So if it's that kind of move, then it's usually because they sucked hard as an NBA coach (like Sid). Johnson had a really good run with the Mavs...then a not-so-good run with the horrible Nets.

Sid was probably one of the worst hires in the history of NC State sports.

wait, so guys who are successful college coaches don't count? but you're counting sidney lowe, who was already the worst NBA head coach of all time when we hired him?
