Yes. But it coulda been worse. I mean, there are still abstinence-only programs telling young people that condoms aren't effective against the spread of STDs, which is why you shouldn't have sex at all!!! LOL, the teen pregnancy rates are naturally much higher.

But, seriously, researchers dedicated to persuading/informing young people have since found that overstating the prevalence and possibility of contracting an STD backfired. At the same time, they still felt that contracting an STD was disgusting and shameful.

The crappy thing about HIV (for women) is that, outside of obvious risk factors, a lot of it has to do with geography and access to healthcare, not "good decisions." People are still under the impression that, if they aren't "whores" who sleep around, they're good...when really they could simply be living in the wrong small town or the wrong part of whatever big city.

Anyway, y'all are dudes so, except for the "surprise" pregnancy, you kinda lucked out. But, for what it's worth, my friend in her early 30s was out of work for a while due to a hysterectomy. She said it was for a persistent HPV infection, but I still have a hard time getting my head around that. I'm thinking it coulda been for PID, but I dunno...she's been married for years and has two children...so I don't know how she coulda had PID all along. She did grow up in a small town with two places that actually provide STD tests--she said she was always too embarrassed to go because she could run into someone she knows. She wanted a third child.

But, if you must, then monitor your symptoms and have yourself regularly tested. Inform your girlfriend of possible infection immediately. Ideally, don't have unprotected sex with her, especially if you're aware of obvious symptoms.

In addition to her loss of fertility, my friend was in significant pain and out of work for six weeks. She also couldn't contribute to out-of-work stuff during a lot of that time. Plus, she hasn't talked about it, but I imagine she still has to deal with the physiological/physical effects of the hysterectomy, and that'll be a thing she has to manage forever.

I mean, I know y'all's wieners hurt really bad until you get your antibiotics, and I'm sure that's no fun. And you guys can experience some awful outcomes. But women's reproductive systems are even more vulnerable, and you shouldn't fuck with that.
