what's wrong with GPS systems that freight lines use that cost less?

As much as I usually side with the Dems, they cant blame congress for not having enough money to put a dummy system on the train to slow it down when the driver was incompetent....

I could go along with it if the track was failing, or a bridge was crumbling and that caused the accident, but if the fucking driver cant drive the speed limit that is a training or staffing error.

you don't know if this is because of the operator

but yes, safety systems are still needed even though trains have "drivers"

This type of thing just pushes forward to automation, necessitating the need for politicians to start to talk about universal basic income, or worker owned robot coop laws, or some way to address the loss of jobs or pay when machines take over these roles.

I bet the conductors, engineers, and rail workers have some type of union that would never allow some technology to be put into place which would completely take the human out of the loop

Not that I'm a proponent of the teamsters, but they could have automated a train and still had an engineer standing around doing nothing, much like the airlines have now.
