My coworker was in fact a juror. He said that 7/12 wanted Murder 2 but the other 5 held out and they could only get him on involuntary manslaughter. Said he didn't show any remorse the entire time. They saw pics of the bodies, etc. and said that the little girl that survived was just hanging out of the car when the police showed up but this kid was just honking and screaming for them to ignore her and help him. Said that he answered all the questions on the scene in a clear and cognizant way and that he had the foresight to try to hide his fake ID before the cops got there. Apparently he had gotten in a verbal fight with his friend at his frat house and then a physical fight with guys at the frat house who were trying to hold him back from driving. Never asked about the victims, etc. 10/18/2016 9:27:51 AM |

OK I'll bite. I watched the video of his statement during the sentencing hearing. The entire thing was read from script. He barely looked up, let alone looked at ANY of the victims or their family. I really feel like his tears were only shed for himself, and the fact that he knows his life through adulthood is over. It didn't seem like he ever cared about who he killed. I think this kind of goes hand in hand with how they read text messages talking about how selfish he is. 10/18/2016 2:12:08 PM |

As much as I probably despise this guy outside of what he did...
It would have been hard for me to convict him on murder 2, had I been on the jury. I think the jury got it right, and I don't have much of an opinion on the sentence.

Yeah I don't think there was malice. That's what they were arguing about apparently. I'm honestly surprised he got so much time. Not trying to downplay what happened, it's a tragedy on both sides. 10/19/2016 10:44:38 AM |

They charged him with a lot of stuff and he pled guilty to most of it. 10/19/2016 3:32:03 PM |

It's a tragedy for the victims and their family. Not for the driver; that was justice. His choices caused the deaths of 3 people. I think he got off light. 10/19/2016 3:32:33 PM |

the situation that three people are dead and one young person has essentially thrown their life away is tragic. him getting prison time is not tragic.

I just found this case online which is really similar to the Kania case.
http://www.greensboro.com/news/crime/virginia-man-pleads-guilty-in-fatal-greensboro-crash-that-killed/article_077de564-1b85-5dac-99cb-0bb3f5a01762.html
Interesting that this guy pleaded guilty to second degree murder. I wonder if his court appointed lawyer advised him to not go to trial. This dude got almost as much time as Kania for killing a third of the people. Does the police chase make this worse than Kania? I wonder how this would have turned out if this dude had parents that could afford a good lawyer. 1/19/2017 9:35:44 PM |
