Correct. Cause that contest is already decided: I'm #1 Panthers Fan.

When we were in line to get our free glasses after the Canes won the Stanley Cup, all I heard in line were people bickering about who had been fans longer, and how they couldn't stand all these fairweather fans.

Ridiculous.

I can understand irritation at fairweather fans in college sports, but I think it's pretty understandable to be fairweather fans of the hometown pro sports teams. Of course a lot of NC people who didn't closely follow the Panthers when they were shitty are excited now that they're having an epic season.

Teams like the Panthers are good for the NFL. They have a relatively small regional base of fans regardless of how well they perform, and when they perform well, they suck a lot of people in, potentially people who aren't even NFL followers. Then at the very least those people will follow the Panthers/NFL for the next season.

If you're a team like the Patriots, Redskins or GB, you're gonna have a large fan base no matter how hard you blow.

I mean the franchise has barely been around for 20 years. There are other football teams who have been around for over 100 years. That means great grandparents who grew up cheering for the team. Fairweather assholes like HUR who become diehard Seahawks fans because they get a player he liked in college act like the Panthers are supposed to have the same rabid fanbase that a team who has been around since the 1800s has.

Isn't the whole point of the NFL to be on some bandwagon? Otherwise, how could we get those peeps so rich!?! Holla

Best example is Lions, Bills, and Browns that perpetually suck yet alas still sell out very game
and have a huge fan base.

Honestly how do these teams manage to suck year after year. I've heard theories from ex-Lions
fans that the owners don't feel a need to invest in good players because fans will show up no matter
what. This doesn't explain teams with hardcore bases like GB and Pats that always manage to be contenders,
plus there is a lot of money to be made from fan-gear and advertising that i think would soar as the teams
play better.

Dude I live in the PAC NW. I can't even watch most panthers games unless i feel like going to the bar and start drinking at 10AM on a Sunday.
When I lived in NC I pulled for and went to panther games through some shitty seasons.
My conversion was more 55% disdain for Jerry Richardson, 30% due to my location that makes it easy to cheer and watch #3, 5% distaste for the sudden hero and saint scam newton (I'll admit he's having one great season), and 10% due to all the douchy wine & cheese bandwagon fans that i encountered living near uptown that treated going to the games as some sort of fucking status symbol.

I am fine with fairweather fans, but no one likes a bandwagon fan. If you want to only follow your local team when they are having a good season I have no problem with that. If you are the type who has been a steelers, 49ers, dallas, green bay, new england, seattle fan through your life well then you can go fuck yourself.

Panther fans haven't been this excited since last season, when they were Seahawks fans.
