They should restructure it so that each x00 $million has a new set of numbers drawn for the same ticket purchase.

They can't do that though. Because it wouldn't be a real lottery.

It would be moron's weird idea that nobody really likes.

^^ ha, i vaguely remember reading they do something similar in Canada...

Quote :
"WHAT ARE MAX MILLIONS?

Max Millions are additional $1-million prizes that are drawn when the Lotto Max Jackpot reaches $60 million. Max Millions Draws are separate from the Main Jackpot Draw. IS MY LOTTO MAX TICKET ELIGIBLE FOR MAX MILLIONS DRAWS?

When Max Millions prizes are available, your Lotto Max ticket not only gives you a chance at the $60-million Jackpot but it also gives you a chance to win any of the $1-million Max Millions Draws on the same date!

HOW DO I WIN A MAX MILLIONS PRIZE?

You must match all seven of the seven numbers drawn for that Max Millions Draw (there are no subsidiary prizes). For each Max Millions Draw, seven numbers are drawn from among all numbers from 1 to 49."

I'd give some away to approximately 10 TWWers. But I would make them fight or sex to the death for it.

The centerpiece to my lottery plan/fantasy is to set up the legal and financial instruments (trusts, etc) as fast as possible, then travel the world for a year. Partly for my enjoyment, but mostly to give all the leeches time to move on to some other concern. I think it would be forgotten surprisingly quickly. No doubt from time to time someone would think to look me up and discover that I'm back in America, but the initial tsunami of requests would have passed.

what i don't get is why everybody starts buying tix when it gets this high. the odds now are so much more against you. would it really make a difference if you won a few 100 millions vs. 1 billion?

fear of missing out, when it becomes popular you don't want to be the guy that didn't have a chance but when no one else is buying them you don't have that risk

Not any worse than buying tickets to NC State football/basketball this year

but what if all your friends bought one, you didn't, and then they won. think of how dumb you would feel.

that's the response that makes people who otherwise would never buy a ticket buy one when the jackpot gets high

So I think there's several things at play here. Partly, yeah, it's that everybody is talking about it -- which, to some extent, reminds people that the lottery exists. Normally when I'm around NC I don't think about the powerball at all, except when the jackpot makes the news. In a similar vein, a lot of people like to gamble very occasionally, and if you're only going to play once or twice a year, why not make it when the pot is the largest?

And, at least in my case, there's a weird sort of tendency to downplay the usual jackpots. I'm a pessimist, so I assume that I'll end up sharing my numbers with some toothless hillbilly in Florida, so the winnings are halved, then more than halved again by taxes and the lump sum deduction, and somehow in my head all of this reduces the run-of-the-mill $200 million payout into just small enough an amount for me to ruin my life with. But $1.3 billion...even my bad attitude and worse math can make that number seem inconsequential.

Aren't the odds of winning exactly the same regardless of the number of people playing or the size of the pot? The odds of you winning outright go down as the number of players increase but even splitting a pot of this size a few ways results in a pretty penny.

I really don't know. I thought the pot continued to increase because more and more people were buying tickets, which decreases each ticket's likelihood of winning?

^^ yes your odds of hitting the winning number are exactly the same now as when the pot is at a minimum.

The odds of splitting the pot are higher, but I doubt anyone would complain about that.

^^Amazing how many people I've had to explain this concept to.

Only odds that change are the odds you might have multiple jackpot winners.

^False. Three winners expected to each get $187.2 million if they take the lump sum after taxes.
