President Obama
"The thoughts and the prayers of the American people are with the people of Belgium. We stand in solidarity with them in condemning these outrageous attacks against innocent people," the President said at a televised press conference in Cuba. "We will do whatever is necessary to support our friend and ally Belgium in bringing to justice those who are responsible. And this is yet another reminder that the world must unite. We must be together regardless of nationality, race, or faith in fighting against the scourge of terrorism. We can and we will defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world."
Donald Trump
"Brussels was a beautiful city, a beautiful place with zero crime. And now it's a disaster city. It's a total disaster and we have to be very careful in the United States," the Republican frontrunner told Fox and Friends Tuesday.
"We have no idea what's happening. Our government has absolutely no idea what's happening, but they're coming into our country," he continued. "They're coming in by the thousands and just watch what happens. I'm a pretty good prognosticator...just watch what happens over the years. It won't be pretty."
In another interview with Today, Trump once again said he wants to tighten the border and use harsh, extra-legal tactics on terrorist suspects like Abdeslam. "I would be very, very tough on the borders [as president], and I would be not allowing certain people to come into this country without absolute perfect documentation," he said, also promising, "Waterboarding would be fine. If they could expand the laws, I would do a lot more than waterboarding. You have to get the information from these people."
The candidate also told CBS, "They have areas in Brussels where the police can't even go. The police are afraid to go there. The police don't even go there. It's a mess. And if you look at Paris, believe me it's the same thing. It's pretty close. It'll be the same thing. It might be worse, if you want to know the truth. So you know, all of these cities that we think so much of, they're from different planets right now, all because you allowed people into the cities that shouldn't be in there, frankly."
HILLARY CLINTON
"Terrorists have once again struck at the heart of Europe, but their campaign of hate and fear will not succeed. The people of Brussels, of Europe, and of the world will not be intimidated by these vicious killers," the 2016 presidential candidate said in a statement making the rounds on Twitter Tuesday. "Today Americans stand in solidarity with our European allies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and wounded, and all the people of Belgium. These terrorists seek to undermine the democratic values that are the foundation of our alliance and our way of life, but they will never succeed. Today's attacks will only strengthen our resolve to stand together as allies and defeat terrorism and radical jihadism around the world."
"This is a time for us to reaffirm our solidarity with our European friends and allies, individually and through NATO," sheaddedin an interview of her own onToday.
Ted Cruz
"Radical Islam is at war with us. For over seven years we have had a president who refuses to acknowledge this reality. And the truth is, we can never hope to defeat this evil so long as we refuse to even name it," the Republican Senator from Texas posted on his Facebook page. "That ends on January 20, 2017, when I am sworn in as president. We will name our enemy—radical Islamic terrorism. And we will defeat it."
In a news conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday, Cruz added, "President Obama should be back in America keeping this country safe. Or President Obama should be planning to travel to Brussels."
Bernie Sanders
"We offer our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this barbaric attack and to the people of Brussels who were the target of another cowardly attempt to terrorize innocent civilians," the Democratic Senator from Vermont competing with Clinton for their party's 2016 presidential nomination said in a statement. "We stand with our European allies to offer any necessary assistance in these difficult times.
"Today's attack is a brutal reminder that the international community must come together to destroy ISIS," Sanders added. "This type of barbarism cannot be allowed to continue."
John Kasich
"We and our allies must rededicate ourselves to these values of freedom and human rights. We must utterly reject the use of deadly acts of terror," the Republican candidate and Ohio governor said in a statement on Twitter.
"We must also redouble our efforts with our allies to identify, root out and destroy the perpetrators of such acts of evil," he added. "We must strengthen our alliances as our way of life and the international system that has been built on our common values since the end of the Second World War comes under challenge from these and other actors of evil." 3/22/2016 3:28:17 PM |

I was at the Denver airport at a packed check-in line once and there was some random old hardshell suitcase sitting in the middle of the long winding line. Everybody noticed and was like "is that yours" "whose suitcase is that" etc and nobody claimed it so it got a little tense. Someone ran to get a security guy who again asked the line whose suitcase that was and the fucking idiot who left it there was near the front of the line and finally heard.

I've left my bag (duffel-type bag) at the end of the security scanner a few times, i zone out and forget that I didn't check it, and will be sitting at the gate for 10-15 minutes before I realize it, then walk back to security to get it. Most of the time, it's just sitting at the end of the machine, 1 time they gave me dirty looks and had to rummage through it before giving it back to me. 3/22/2016 4:29:56 PM |

The bottom line is we need the national media circuit to endlessly discuss this sad but extremely rare event, because more people definitely don't die from eating McDonalds every day. I vote for more security especially a blanket check on people of specific religions or races, and definitely no improvements to healthcare. If this were to happen to an American we wouldn't want tax payers to have to foot the bill for their medical expenses. 3/22/2016 4:49:09 PM |

Anecdotal perspectives from some Europeans
^^ Problem is that's the world we live in. If politicians use this rare event too push an agenda, it has real, lasting events. This forces other people to push back against this, which often requires framing things in terms of the events. That's life. There's no steady state of rules where we can all just sit back, it requires constant discourse. 3/22/2016 4:58:11 PM |

Yesterday at the Phoenix airport this baby in the security line would not stop fucking crying. Her mom carried her through the metal detector and set it off. The Belgians sat on their asses drinking beer and eating chocolate.
Quote : | "One of the attackers in the Brussels suicide bombings was deported last year from Turkey, and Belgium subsequently ignored a warning that the man was a militant, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday.
Erdogan’s office later identified the man as Ibrahim El Bakraoui, one of the two brothers named by Belgium as responsible for the attacks that killed at least 31 people in Brussels on Tuesday and were claimed by the Daesh group.
Speaking at a news conference, Erdogan said Bakraoui was detained in the southern Turkish province of Gaziantep near the Syrian border and was later deported to the Netherlands. Turkey also notified Dutch authorities, Erdogan said.
“One of the attackers in Brussels is an individual we detained in Gaziantep in June 2015 and deported. We reported the deportation to the Belgian Embassy in Ankara on July 14, 2015, but he was later set free,” Erdogan said.
“Belgium ignored our warning that this person is a foreign fighter.”" |
Quote : | "Earlier on Thursday, Belgium's interior and justice ministers offered to resign over a failure to track an Islamic State militant expelled by Turkey as a suspected fighter and who blew himself up at Brussels Airport.
Bakraoui's brother Khalid, 26, killed about 20 people at Maelbeek metro station in the city center. De Morgen newspaper said he had violated the terms of his parole in May by maintaining contacts with past criminal associates, but a Belgian magistrate had released him.
At the time, Belgian authorities replied that Bakraoui, who had skipped parole after serving less than half of a nine-year sentence for armed robbery, was a criminal but not a militant." |
Quote : | "Top Belgian officials on Thursday acknowledged miscommunications and other errors in the prelude to the Brussels suicide bombings, as growing evidence of links to the Paris assaults by the Islamic State suggested that a wide network of trained attackers leading back to Syria is now rooted in Europe.
The Belgian justice and interior ministers acknowledged that their departments should have acted on a Turkish alert about a convicted Belgian criminal briefly arrested in Turkey last year on suspicion of terrorist activity, who turned out to be one of the suicide bombers. And the Belgian prosecutor’s office said that person’s brother — another suicide bomber — had been wanted since December in connection with the Paris attacks.
Taken together, they amounted to the first high-level acknowledgment that European officials could have done more to avert the bombings, and came amid other recriminations in the European Union about recurrent failures among its national police forces and intelligence services to share information." |

In related news, the French foil a plot which they say was at an "advanced stage":

Quote : | "In Paris on Thursday, authorities arrested a French national suspected of belonging to a militant network planning an attack in France.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a televised address that the arrest helped "foil a plot in France that was at an advanced stage."
Cazeneuve added that the man arrested "is suspected of high-level involvement in this plan. He was part of a terrorist network that planned to strike France."
After the arrest by the French counterterrorism service, DGSI, the agency raided an apartment building on Thursday night in the northern Paris suburb of Argenteuil. French TV station ITele reported that explosives had been found in the man's house." |
