Exactly.
Y'all are amateurs... go to the FB group below and post your arguments there (but do it respectfully if you don't want to be banned) and the "experts" there will have a retort for every one of your arguments, challenging you to use your mind like you normally don't:

Flat Earthism is going mainstream now; first ever public billboard:
Here is a 3-min CBS news clip about the billboard:

So until any of you have a debate with serious "scientific"-minded flat earthers, keep smoking....
P.S. There are hundreds of flat earth FB groups but many are small and not that active, but here are a couple of other ones with lots of members and influence:

I purposefully stay off of the face space. I would like to know the counter arguments to 3 physical phenomena.
1)Eratosthenes' experiment that shows the angle of the sun's rays relative to the radius of the earth are varied depending on where you are on the earth and the time of day.
2) The shape of the Earth's shadow on the moon during an eclipse.
3) The relative movement and observability of the constellations depending on how far away from the earth's equator you observe them.
To me, those three things prove the Earth is a Spheroid, and Eratosthenes was able to calculate the diameter of the spheroid within a few percent of what NASA calculated roughly 2000 years later. All three also are repeatable with very similar results. 6/9/2017 11:08:07 PM |

A circle and a sphere produce the same shadow when lit from behind.
You just can't see the shadow of the turtle's legs on the moon because he's a little bit smaller than the earth. 6/9/2017 11:17:45 PM |

^Sure, but that would require that the sun be "behind" the Earth at some point, which is counter to the theory that the sun orbits on a plane parallel to the surface of the Earth. So using the flat Earth model the Earth never comes between the sun and the moon.
This is so amazing. After reading some of their literature it appears that they point to only a few pieces of observable evidence, and assume that all other evidence has been manufactured or is being misinterpreted. Further, they believe that there is a massive conspiracy to perpetuate the myth that the earth is round, and point to that to back their claim of manufactured evidence.

Exactly, there is no way that Euorpe, Russia, China, the US and now India would all come together in support of this conspiracy.6/10/2017 6:31:53 AM |

I like conspiracy theories.
I especially like watching crazy people try and push their conspiracy theories with horribly fake data. It's amusing to watch.
So I took two days and during my free time, I watched a bunch of those videos. I didn't immerse myself in any real news or constructive events (when I was online).
And I can see how people who saturate themselves in only that stuff and not listen to counter arguments could get sucked in to believe every bit of it.
If you only let yourself be exposed to crazy conspiracy theories, you'll eventually buy it, because you don't ground yourself in truth.
That's why people should really consider turning it off.
Turn off CNN. Turn off MSNBC. Turn off CBS.
Stop watching/listening to the analyses of what biased people say about Trump.
Because if all you do is watch CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc., you will believe Donald Trump had nightly conversations with Putin over how to steal the election from Clinton, and then how President Trump pressed James Comey to stop the investigation of those nightly conversations.
And you will believe that James T. Hodgkinson's attempted assassination of the House Majority Whip was due to President Trump.
And you will believe that the American Health Care Act will literally kill people (even though it defunds Planned Parenthood, which actually kills people).
So, equate this thread to that topic, and you'll see how crazy those people (and you) really are.

This seems like something that could be so easily proven (that the earth is not flat), how, in this day and age, is this flat earth movement a thing? And how is it growing? 6/25/2017 12:48:51 PM |
wizzkidd All American 1668 Posts user info edit post |
Their argument is that it's NOT so easily proven. If you'll read some of their literature you can see some exceptions to the widely accepted rules. Flat earthers point to these to say "AH HA, Round Earth Theory can't be correct". 6/25/2017 12:54:58 PM |

if i go ahead and assume they're right, i don't see how my daily life would change a bit. i still get on a plane and end up where i wanted to be. i still punch in an address to my phone and navigate there via GPS. why would "the man" want to make us think the earth is round instead of actually flat? makes no difference to most folks. 6/25/2017 8:45:08 PM |

^ It may not directly affect your life but it will eventually raise a generation of kids who will end up believing conspiracy theories instead of learning science. We need to keep the number of stupid people in this world to a bare minimum. That way we don't end up electing the wrong people. 7% of Americans think chocolate milks comes form brown cows. 6/26/2017 10:20:14 PM |

Sure, I'm not saying it's not important to know the earth is round. I'm just saying that it's not much of a conspiracy theory without a motive. 6/27/2017 9:58:07 AM |

And this is a good read:
https://www.sciencealert.com/researchers-have-figured-out-what-makes-people-reject-science-and-it-s-not-ignorance
Quote : | "Researchers Say They've Figured Out What Makes People Reject Science, And It's Not Ignorance
In fact, the researchers found that people who reject scientific consensus on topics such as climate change, vaccine safety, and evolution are generally just as interested in science and as well-educated as the rest of us.
The issue is that when it comes to facts, people think more like lawyers than scientists, which means they 'cherry pick' the facts and studies that back up what they already believe to be true.
So if someone doesn't think humans are causing climate change, they will ignore the hundreds of studies that support that conclusion, but latch onto the one study they can find that casts doubt on this view. This is also known as cognitive bias.
"We find that people will take a flight from facts to protect all kinds of belief including their religious belief, their political beliefs, and even simple personal beliefs such as whether they are good at choosing a web browser," said one of the researchers, Troy Campbell from the University of Oregon.
"People treat facts as relevant more when the facts tend to support their opinions. When the facts are against their opinions, they don't necessarily deny the facts, but they say the facts are less relevant."" |

I would add to your list, the failure of our [American?] society to nurture critical thinking skills.
