I was holding out some hope for Archie, but much happier about this hire than Lowe or Gott. Just hope we will play with high energy on both sides of the court and Keatts will make his players accountable for their mistakes. Last two coaches were pussies and let players get away with shitty effort and poor execution.

I think he'll be a fantastic recruiter.

He coached the best high-school players in the country for 10+ years at Hargrave, so he knows the ropes. Then he recruited a lot of the UL guys for Pitino that went on to win a championship.

Plus he's young and black and plays a fun style of bball in the best conference in America. Pretty easy sell.

Glad we didn't wait around and let this thing drag out. Not worth waiting around on Archie who didn't seem that interested and then lose a guy that really has similar upside/potential. The two resumes have some similarities and for every positive about Archie there is an equivalent accomplishment to point to for Keatts.

Looks like we got an up and coming coach for a good price which leaves plenty of money for a good staff. I am ok with this. Decock from n&o made a good point, one more great year from keatts at uncw would have put him at the top of every coaching search, and we get him at a reasonable cost a year early.

No it's not out of the realm of possibility, it's just much more likely that Archie made his stance known to Yow, thus there was no need to bother waiting a whole 8 hours until after the Dayton game.

Did anybody else hear the word on the streets about Archie and his brother Sean advising him not to coach here? One of the main reasons being is that Sean Miller is going to be one of the lead candidates for the UNC Tarheel job when Roy retires?

Will Archie coach at UNC under his brother?

It might make sense if we hired a coach that had no recruiting current ties to the area. But that's not an an issue with keatts

Brad Brownell also turned UNCW around in a short period of time and won CAA coach of the year honors during that time.

Just playing devil's advocate, I have no opinions on this hire and hope for the best.

^thats fair and the same could have been said for will wade at vcu. Like...maybe vcu is just an easier place to win at and there's no guarantee he's gonna be good either. Or Archie at Dayton. I'm optimistic but yeah it's always a risk with this type of hire. But I'm excited. The alternative is a retread who has a known ceiling

Brownell didn't "turn it around" they won the conference the year before he became head coach. He inherited a good program.

^^ yeah the defensive numbers are a legit concern. Haven't watched much uncw myself but it sounds like they pressed and played an aggressive style of defense. Statistically, it doesn't look good though. But in theory, I love the idea of a long agressive defense. Our defense under gott had no energy, no effort, and largely seemed to lack defensive fundamentals.

Saw some stats where they did force turnovers at a good rate. Which is much better than gott's teams. But that'll be something to wait and see on for sure.
