message boards shouldn't be totally done away with, imdb for instance needs to bring theirs back...yes there was plenty of garbage on there but being able to ask questions/discuss a specific movie was an important part of their site

^It isn't confusing, it is just a message board. And there did used to be some other boards run off the same server that looked the same, only with different colors. One of them was called "Party 49ers" and you had to be enrolled at UNC Charlotte to get a free membership.

Not sure that was run off the same server, but it was CrazyWeb. It was the so-called PartyInCollege / CampusBlender network.

^It's interesting that most of the community that CampusBlender / PartyInCollege sought to create has been vacuumed up by other, big, online social platforms. . . I still prefer the home-brewed taste of places like this!

It seems that not a lot of people have the motivation to create interesting communities online anymore, however. . .

That's pretty much been said over and over in this thread. Most of us have no clue who most of the people on here are. There have been some pretty entertaining topics started in these forums that are not topics that need to be discussed on facebook, or twitter where a lot of people actually know you.

I wonder what accounts for who stays here and who leaves. Obviously a lot have left. Some of them died, so they have an excuse. But more, presumably, "moved on with their lives." What confuses me is that...so did the rest of us. There's a lot of married people on TWW. There's a lot of people with kids, homes, and nice careers on TWW. Yes, they may have a connection to the much-touted community of this site - but so did all the big-time posters who left.

I dunno, I'm probably overthinking it. Simple attrition probably accounts for the whole thing. But to me it's still a more interesting question than "Why don't new people join?," the answers to which strike me as pretty cut and dried.

I love TWW in all its old-timey shittiness. It has given me a lot. I'm sad to see its decline, both for its own sake and because I'll never get the chance to be an elder statesman of a bustling forum, the way some of those early TWW-celebrities seemed to me.

I think some people just reached their breaking point when this place was overrun by bubs & company's takeover and the powers that be just letting it go. You can only go so long before it's not worth your time. And it killed any interest from what could have been new membership. And on top of that, Facebook and Reddit started being the place for the content and discussion people wanted.

I just come back in hopes of MSPaint threads returning to their former glory.

^This! Myspace kicked off the social networking era of the internet and then it was followed by facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. Those places let you host as many photos as you want for free. TWW allows a max of 50 photos for free. People are more interested in social networks now. And I do think message boards often fail when the original members start to grow older and move on in life. ACC Boards, Fan Home, Big Hoops, and Big Politics have all gone away. Even before they totally closed down the sites there had drop offs in daily traffic.

people on here can be pretty mean/unnecessarily hostile. Reddit feels like sunshine and rainbows compared to tww, for better or for worse. also, I think a lot of people still lurk - when the site was in jeopardy of being shut down a lot of them spoke up for the first time in a while.

As sappy as this sounds, I miss the community of the glory days. Ya wed bitch and yell and troll each other over politics, but we had a lot of fun and wacky adventures. And there was a sense of community. Im glad I was here during those years---under a few names.
