hey white people, no one is actually stopping you from saying it. just understand that some people don't like you saying it and you should go ahead and say it if you want and deal with their reactions accordingly.
it's kind of like how ladies use the term "bitch" for each other but if a guy calls a woman a bitch, it's probably not viewed as a term of endearment. i personally don't advocate for anyone using the n-word, but white people get so sensitive about "I should be allowed to use it too" when there really isn't anything stopping you people but yourselves.

I honestly think that you are attributing the 1960s mindset to a modern, developed, light-hearted usage of the word. That is the problem. This word has become synonymous for "cool mother fucker" to a ton of kids like me that grew up in the 90's, and now you are saying that we are not allowed to joke around and call somebody the HNIC at work because that would be derogatory.
If it weren't for how prevalent this word has become in modern culture, I would agree with you, but you are basically saying that white people can't take part in all of the joking around because of the color of their skin.

what in the whole fuck are you talking about banjo? did you even read what I said? ffs, i even said "i personally don't advocate for anyone using the n-word".
where did I say that white people can't take part in all the joking around? you can....just understand that some people don't joke around like that. p.s. was your wife ok with you saying it?
[Edited on June 12, 2017 at 5:12 PM. Reason : if it means "cool motherfucker" to you, go ahead and use it out in the open then. ] 6/12/2017 5:09:11 PM |

^^ honestly sounds like you just want an excuse to use a word that is nearly universally regarded as incredibly offensive and downright hateful all in the sake of making a joke. which...ok, make the joke. but as ^ said, don't be surprised when it doesn't go over well because, as we all know (and whether you like it or not), it's viewed by a lotta people as a hateful word.
so what exactly do you want? for people to not be offended by the word? special permission to use it with impunity all for the sake of saying "HNIC" at work?
Quote : | "This word has become synonymous for "cool mother fucker" to a ton of kids like me that grew up in the 90's, " |
and it remains a very hateful word to a shit ton of people too. just because you may not be racist or mean it in a hateful way doesn't mean people won't take it that way.

@afripino my original post wasn't so much about white folks not being able to say the N word; but more about "hood passes", which I've never heard of before.
I also was surprised to hear how affected Ice Cube was because Maher's joke. It's like Maher's past was totally thrown out and he became Sean Hannity in the eyes of blacks.
With all this shit going on with Trump, you'd think the black community would stay on target and not get caught up in fighting with your supporters. 6/13/2017 10:04:45 AM |

what has Bill Maher done in the past that would justify that joke to "the blacks"?

what "shit going on with Trump" are you talking about? honestly, one white guy saying the n-word on TV and a few tweets and reactions from some rappers isn't a fucking shift in focus for the black community. there are larger issues that ARE being focused on, it's just not as entertaining as you'd like. you're just hyper-focused on the sensationalist nature of this crap while people are dealing with REAL problems and ACTUAL racism. also, Ice Cube doesn't represent all black people. the "black community" isn't some hive mind.6/13/2017 10:23:08 AM |

i feel like it's very possible to both be upset at Maher's joke and still "stay on target" for larger issues. people are perfectly capable of having multiple trains of thought, and can handle multiple issues at one time.
reminds me of when an athlete gets their picture taken at a bar or something....the reaction becomes "why aren't they practicing and studying film?". you can do multiple things and balance them in your life. it's quite easy to not have a one track mind. 6/13/2017 10:33:51 AM |

So we can't call ourselves the HNIC at work?
Cause I've been building relationships and establishing my value with the sole purpose of one day--maybe a couple decades from now--declaring myself the HNIC.
And I mean it. I am the Hockey Night in Canada. 6/13/2017 4:27:38 PM |

I got my brother a gavel with HNIC inscribed on it. He kept it in his office and realized how annoying it was to explain what HNIC meant. Figured most adults knew it 6/14/2017 2:38:07 PM |
