i've been in this situation and my wife's sibling and herself naturally came to the understanding of first come first serve. It didn't require any real conversation or anything. It's just that, even though they have their problems and disagreements, they aren't assholes.

dtownral reminds me of my friend. This is the exact sort of thing he would have pulled and is usually the reasoning behind several squabbles he gets in with people he knows and with his inlaws. The reason this happens is that he is an entitled brat, with low metacognition. I wouldn't describe him as an asshole because he isn't acting on a form of dominance over others or disregard for their needs; rather, he is acting out of fairness but his extreme entitlement categorizes fair as what works well for him and no degree of logic will ever help him understand the root of how his actions are self-serving.

I don't know the OP well enough but the humble bragging about the inlaw's standing and the take on how the situation should have been handled leads me to believe these two characters have a lot in common.

Empathetic isn’t the word I’d use. Realistic, rational, reasonable are all options I’d use, however. If you had really learned the lesson claimed I would applaud you but the facetious tone again exemplifies the hypothesis.

Note: I’m not trying to be a dick. I went out of my way to highlight that you’re not an asshole despite your own inquiry and other claims. It’s just what I’m sensing.
