Other teams get to recruit players and improve also. Beating them last year doesn’t mean we should beat them this year. Clemson is clearly better this year. By every metric they are better than we are. But on the whole the gap is narrowing.

you can’t claim to be making noise nationally and then get outclassed in all facets like we did tonight

everything was leading up to this game, and they weren’t up to the task

it’d be fine to lose like this with no expectations, but those expectations matter. especially considering we beat them last year combined with the fact that they struggled against Wake last week

we weren’t ready for Prime Time, after nearly a year of saying that this will be the year that we’re ready for Prime Time

none of that equates to a defeatist attitude

Clemson is just better than us. And that’s ok to admit. They’re really fucking good. What frustrates me more than just us losing is that our offense is just fucking constipated showing no signs of improvement. I don’t love Beck. Leary hasn’t been sharp much of the season (he was balling that first drive though). And our WRs are weak.

But I spent most of my life being a burro, being an nc state fan is hard and it's easy to be super negative about it all the time. I truly don’t understand this. Losing on the road to a top 5 team isn’t really a sweeping declaration on anything. Not every game is a referendum on the season or program as a whole. We lost to a better team. I think how the rest of the season plays out will be far more telling than this one game. We weren’t gonna go undefeated but beating Clemson was not an impossible task. And it sucks to lose to them because you really can see how we’re a lot closer to their equal than we were a few years ago. Winning the division at this point is really unlikely, so that’s a goal that wasn’t unreasonable but it’ll likely go unfulfilled. A perfectly reasonable reason to be upset!

I guess I’m ok with seeing this as us being in a nationally relevant game. And being right there in the game into the 4th Q, our defense was up the task. I don’t like moral victories and that’s not what I’m getting at. I didn’t watch the game and think we didn’t belong on the field with them or that our ranking was wildly undeserved. I think we’re still a really good team and because we were never realistically gonna go 12-0, this loss doesn’t have to define anything. We are not in the elite group of teams that can truly say their season is a disappointment if they lose a single game. We can still have a hell of a season and play in more nationally relevant games. We’ll need major adjustments offensively for that to happen.

I interpret what you’ve said to basically be: we had a chance to put our stamp on this season and become a top 5 ish team in the nation and instead we fell flat on our face. Tell me if I’ve interpreted that wrong.

Exactly. It’s fun to embrace it. Being negative is not fun for me. Theres enough shit in the world to be negative about. I want to get something positive out of my sports fandom, not even more negativity. I get that some people don’t wanna get their hopes up for the inevitable heartbreak. But imo it’s more fun to just enjoy the ride. We will almost surely never win a national title in football in my life. That’s just where we are in the pecking order of CFB. So if I can accept that and adjust my expectations so that I can actually enjoy a 9-3 or maybe even 10 win season because of its rarity, it makes me far happier as a fan. It’s fine to disagree and to approach hype and expectations with skepticism I’m not saying I’m a better fan than anybody else or anything like that. But I’m just kinda over the negativity of “NC State Shit” and all that.

The difference is with those losses we'd still be in contention for ACC CG. Unless something gets weird, the season is now just a regular old what bowl will be we go to season. If we're good, Clemson is the game that matters 9 times out of 10.

I mean the scenario you describe happened last year and it was still fun even thought the clemson game ended up not mattering
