okay...sylar's "power" is the ability to "see" what's wrong with things--why he's good with watches, etc...he "saw" into brian davis' brain and that he was "broken"...that no matter what his power was something was wrong with him that would end his life before he came to be. same with charlie (the aneurysm she was telling hiro about)--all these people's deaths are inevitable. sylar just kills them now and takes their power by a means that i'm not sure yet...he zombie-fies them and eats their brain? he studies it so he can trigger that part in his brain? i dunno...but i think seeing "flaws" is his ability

He has to cut open their head so that he can see what is "wrong" with their brain. By knowing what is wrong with their brain, he can alter his to gain their ability. His power is that he can learn other people ability. Thats why it stays with him. Hes not like Nathan, who just absorbs the ability.

I think Hiro knows that he cannot directly change the past. However, I think he will soon realize that he can change the past by informing others what needs to be done. Therefore, he can indirectly change the past. Thats why he told Nathan to "save the cheerleader, save the world". He couldnt do it himself from the future, he needed help.
