until Forefront comes out, you will want AV.
ESET is the only one I remotely like for Win7, and I literally tried every single option out there during the beta. Very little resource usage, keeps updated, inexpensive and has caught several things I would have otherwise been infected by (just from regular internet browsing and email). 8/13/2009 9:01:26 PM |

well i know plenty of people with several anti-virus and/or anti-spyware tools installed whose computers i've had to clean up. i've never been asked by somebody who decided not to use anti-virus to clean up their PC.
you're right, i could easily have thousands of viruses infecting my computers and i could not know it. but you can just as easily say "you don't know what you don't know" to somebody with or without AV. 8/13/2009 11:39:31 PM |

I had a lot of issues with AVG Free, and AVG Pro during Beta/RC. Performance lags, too much micromanagement, infrequent updates, and it didn't like the computer being in sleep mode.8/14/2009 7:13:41 PM |

Mines working great on my dell 1420, except the sound driver. It keeps telling me that Im installing it correctly and that it was a success, but I get no sound? Not sure what the deal is there, but the OS itself is pretty spiffy. Just running a basid 7/avira/pg2 at the moment. Very smooth. 8/15/2009 11:39:48 AM |

I don't know if anybody else is having this problem but whenever i'm playing a video on win 7 either with media player or gom player, it randomly freezes for up to 20 secs and then resumes. I thought it was the 8600m gt nvidia since i've read that it had a defect in it. But i've reformatted it and put vista on it and now it's playing without any problems. I used the win 7 rc and rtm and both froze while playing videos so theres nothing wrong with my copies. Perhaps it was the driver but dell doesn't have the win 7 drivers for the 8600m gt on their site so I used the latest copy from nvidia website. Any suggestions? 8/15/2009 4:42:25 PM |

Well I see a nice performance gain with 64 bit 7 over 32 bit XP on a 2.3GHz AMD X2 with 4GB ram?
I'm not so eager to do a clean install at the moment, but if the OS and apps will be snappier on the level of a processor upgrade, I'd consider it. 8/16/2009 9:07:48 AM |

Main issue with 64-bit is addresses obv take up more memory, so the gains are negligible with 4 GB of RAM.
Better to go with 6 or 8 GB on 64-bit; 6 GB particularly if you're using an intel core i7 cpu to take full advantage of triple-channel DDR3.
On the plus side, 64-bit is more secure -- one reason being it requires signed drivers. There is more to it, but that's the height of my knowledge on the subject : p 8/16/2009 9:10:03 PM |

lmfao. how much memory do you think pointers are taking up on the average machine? 256 MB of 32-bit pointers? 67,108,864 pointers in memory on his machine right now? 8/16/2009 10:24:07 PM |
Donogh5 All American 971 Posts user info edit post |
ya, i know, not much, but it's not entirely insignificant
don't know what kinds of credentials these peeps have, but pointer size is definitely a consideration when switching to 64-bit Windows with only 4 GB of RAM:
http://channel9.msdn.com/forums/Coffeehouse/260393-PC-with-4GB-of-ram-Vista-x86-or-x64/
Quote : | "here are three reasons why x64 Windows uses more memory than x86:
1. In native 64 bit applications (and most of Windows itself), pointers are 64 bits, so they take twice as much memory as a 32 bit pointer. 2. Stack alignment is 16 bytes, as opposed to 4 bytes on 32 bit (again, only applies to native 64 bit code). 3. A lot of the OS is loaded twice: to be able to run 32 bit applications, many of the core OS libraries (e.g. kernel32.dll, user32.dll) exist in both 32 and 64 bit versions. These versions are both kept in memory (when both are needed) so this wastes memory." |
this post seems to address the common questions around addressable RAM and Windows:

i'd like to know why the fuck everytime i try to type in the search box in control panel it randomly acts like i hit enter or something. i get one or two letters in at most usually before i have to try again. 8/17/2009 1:03:43 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^windows search uses look ahead.
As soon as you type the first letter it goes searching, and continues to filter as you type. You don't have to "start over", just hit backspace once. 8/17/2009 6:43:13 PM |
ScHpEnXeL Suspended 32613 Posts user info edit post |
doesn't work.
backspace just takes me back to the control panel before it processed the first letter. i can do that, then hit ctrl+f again, then type again, and it works fine.
the filtering after each letter works fine, it's the fact that i can't type more than one letter (the first time) without it making my cursor disappear--for lack of a better way to describe it.
after hitting ctrl+f a second time it works as it should and filters after each letter if i type slow or after a couple of letters if i type fast and lets me keep typing. very strange.
