You read the article but didn't quite understand it.
Quote : | " Anyway, this guy is determined to sit in front of the Apple store for two days and nights. The video below was sent to us by Zoltan Kaprinay, a Hungarian tourist who came to New York to pick up his own iPad on Saturday. He was scoping out the Apple store and captured the footage below." |
There are two people in this paragraph
Person A = this guy Person B = a Hungarian tourist
Person A is first in line while person B captured some video of person A while person B was 'scoping out the apple store on his trip to NY.' Which indicates he was doing just that, scoping out the apple store, doesn't indicate that he is standing in line behind person A.

Because you're going to sit and hold the screen up to watch it?
If it's supposed to be a device to sit on your couch and use, you're not going to watch Netflix on it because that's what your TV is for.
If it's supposed to be a device you travel with, chances are you travel mainly for business, and chances are you're going to have a laptop with you.

^ i watch netflix all the time on my laptop, and i could see myself enjoying that same pleasure at lunch somewhere out of my office, sans laptop. "holding it up" isn't a valid complaint on that point.
the point is you download apps to do what you want to do with it, right? maybe i'd use it differently than you would, and that's ok.
you make a lot of assumptions with that last one, bub.

I'll be traveling with both because iPad will be so much less of a hassle to get out at the airport, on the plane, and in the car (when not driving obviously). Business or pleasure.

Your laptop's screen is visible with absolutely no interaction from you. You'd have to find something to lean the iPad against in order for it to be visible.
Unless you buy Apple's case, which lifts the top of the screen a whopping inch off the table.4/2/2010 12:07:39 AM |

Dock or as you say, apple's Case.
also there were never any problems with reading a book while eating lunch, laying it flat on a table....why all of a sudden is that an issue with an iPad? I'm guessing the JooJoo and all other tablet like devices will have these same complaints, no (regardless of what OS or manufacture they hail from)?

Quote : | "why I'm completely uninterested in buying an iPad -- it really feels like the second coming of the CD-ROM "revolution" in which "content" people proclaimed that they were going to remake media by producing expensive (to make and to buy) products. I was a CD-ROM programmer at the start of my tech career, and I felt that excitement, too, and lived through it to see how wrong I was, how open platforms and experimental amateurs would eventually beat out the spendy, slick pros. " |
Quote : | "So what does Marvel do to "enhance" its comics? They take away the right to give, sell or loan your comics. What an improvement. Way to take the joyous, marvellous sharing and bonding experience of comic reading and turn it into a passive, lonely undertaking that isolates, rather than unites. Nice one, Misney." |
Quote : | "Then there's the device itself: clearly there's a lot of thoughtfulness and smarts that went into the design. But there's also a palpable contempt for the owner. I believe -- really believe -- in the stirring words of the Maker Manifesto: if you can't open it, you don't own it. Screws not glue.....
But with the iPad, it seems like Apple's model customer is that same stupid stereotype of a technophobic, timid, scatterbrained mother as appears in a billion renditions of "that's too complicated for my mom" (listen to the pundits extol the virtues of the iPad and time how long it takes for them to explain that here, finally, is something that isn't too complicated for their poor old mothers). " |
Quote : | "The way you improve your iPad isn't to figure out how it works and making it better. The way you improve the iPad is to buy iApps. Buying an iPad for your kids isn't a means of jump-starting the realization that the world is yours to take apart and reassemble; it's a way of telling your offspring that even changing the batteries is something you have to leave to the professionals. " |
Quote : | "And let's look at the iStore. For a company whose CEO professes a hatred of DRM, Apple sure has made DRM its alpha and omega. Having gotten into business with the two industries that most believe that you shouldn't be able to modify your hardware, load your own software on it, write software for it, override instructions given to it by the mothership (the entertainment industry and the phone companies), Apple has defined its business around these principles. It uses DRM to control what can run on your devices, which means that Apple's customers can't take their "iContent" with them to competing devices, and Apple developers can't sell on their own terms. " |
Quote : | "I think that the press has been all over the iPad because Apple puts on a good show, and because everyone in journalism-land is looking for a daddy figure who'll promise them that their audience will go back to paying for their stuff. The reason people have stopped paying for a lot of "content" isn't just that they can get it for free, though: it's that they can get lots of competing stuff for free, too. The open platform has allowed for an explosion of new material, some of it rough-hewn, some of it slick as the pros, most of it targetted more narrowly than the old media ever managed. " |
Quote : | "Just like the gadget press is full of devices that gadget bloggers need (and that no one else cares about), the mainstream press is full of stories that affirm the internal media consensus." |
Quote : | "If you want to live in the creative universe where anyone with a cool idea can make it and give it to you to run on your hardware, the iPad isn't for you.
If you want to live in the fair world where you get to keep (or give away) the stuff you buy, the iPad isn't for you.
If you want to write code for a platform where the only thing that determines whether you're going to succeed with it is whether your audience loves it, the iPad isn't for you. " |
Whether you agree with the points or not, I think it's pretty funny and can def. see his point of view. On the other hand I can see the ease-of-use POV too. But we ARE fat & lazy, and I think things have been overly simplified for us and is actually making us dumber than smarter. See, I think the problem with that argument is that for many of these people, it's not about "can a netbook do more for me?" I think their feeling is more that the iPad does a limited set of things, but it does them a fuckton better than a netbook. Without getting into specifics of each, there's a lot of innovative and useful things you can do with a touchscreen device that's got apps specifically designed for it. 4/2/2010 1:31:40 PM |

Thanks for posting that Prospero.
He really hit on a number of good talking points. I totally agree on the content front, this is a way to lock people back into paying for content. He suggests is as a bad thing, I actually totally disagree. Content production has been dying slowly since the 80's as a profession, regardless of medium (print, design, music, video) and has been slowly replaced by DISTRIBUTION production.
What he overlooks are two critical things that the iPad (and other closed economic systems) provide: They give individual content producers a mostly-level playing field. Sure the iPad is in bed with the giant publishers. But there is absolutely NO reason for authors to leverage those publishers anymore in a digital distribution world. We are seeing this movement in the music space, with more and more bands staying unsigned and selling themselves on myspace, youtube and iTunes. The same is beginning to happen with books. The tide has already turned with games and applications.
What the iPad, iPhone, WinPhone, et al do is to open the world back up to content production as a viable way to make a living. Which, in the long term, gives people incentive to LEARN how to produce things again. He is correct that right now it's publicly viewed as a lazy consumption device. But how many thousands of companies, hobbyists, students and individuals are now software developers as a result? And how many new musicians are in the same boat? I think the written medium will be the next to go.
So really it means a revolution of creative industries, and the death of monopolistic content distribution. The model today is distribution decides what will sell. The model tomorrow is the producer is willing to revenue share and the distribution is agnostic to the success or failure of any individual piece of content.
Fortunately this ISN'T all in Apple technology, there are other healthy marketplaces out there to keep the new digital distributors from getting too greedy, so I think this is, long term, an extremely good thing for society and technology.
PS: I won't be buying an iPad. 4/2/2010 2:06:01 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
^Well I understand that POV from a creative industry professional. But I don't see how that helps the consumer. From the consumer POV I lose my rights to trade, sell, or give content away. I essentially no longer own any content really, my device owns the content. Cost doesn't decrease for the digital media, in fact they keep the same cost or increase cost and take more rights away. Look at the most recent development in CD's, physical media prices have dropped, yet if I buy a CD I can do whatever I want with it pretty much. 4/2/2010 2:11:34 PM |

Steam, xbox marketplace, ps3 marketplace all use the same model. Digital distribution of content. I think it's a step in the right direction.
Then again I didn't grow up with comics, pogs(?), and such. I did grow up with pc and console gaming but was one of very few to have that so it also wasn't something to share and trade when I was much younger.
Also these things need to evolve. Comics are evolving, gaming is becoming more social (for the most part) so it does 'bring people together'

Yes, digital distribution is cost-effective and convenient. It does however take away whatever rights you "used" to have with physical media.
The frustration is not about the distribution METHOD, it's about the RIGHTS (or rather lack thereof) that surround it. 4/2/2010 2:38:06 PM |
