Quote : | "The former coach of Manchester United's £7.4 million summer recruit Bebe says he tried and failed to sell the player for just €150,000 in January.
Bebe's arrival at Old Trafford was unexpected to say the least, as the forward moved to United from Vitoria Guimaraes having spent only five weeks at the Portuguese club after joining on a free transfer from Estrela Amadora.
His experience of competitive football was limited to the Portuguese third division and United signed him on the strength of some impressive appearances in pre-season. However, Estrela coach Jorge Paxaio says they could have purchased Bebe at a fraction of the price just eight months ago.
"Last season we had no money at all," Paxaio told the Daily Mail. "We were trying to transfer Bebe to other clubs. We had to raise money desperately. We told everyone in England and in Europe: 'For €150,000 you can have him'.
"We couldn't get anybody interested. Nobody trusted him. None of the clubs were interested because he had never played at a high level.
"I was surprised with the sudden way it happened with United. I was hoping he would move to a bigger club in Portugal or a medium-sized club in Europe.
"I didn't expect Manchester United. Having said this, Manchester United have signed an extraordinary player."
Estrela's claim has been backed-up by Bebe's former agent, Goncalo Reis, who added: "Bebe would have been very cheap during last season and then we tore up the contract because he wasn't being paid by Estrela and so then he was free.
"A scout from United could have contacted me or the club last season. There was no secret. But I understand that the United scout just saw certain games in Portugal and only realised Bebe was a great player when he saw some pre-season games involving Guimaraes.
"If they had looked wider they would have seen him earlier and paid very little. But everyone was the same." " |
LOL. Sounds like a great buy.9/2/2010 8:16:56 AM |

right
but they obviously had money available in this window to buy VDV/Ozil so I don't want to hear the "It's all owners' fault that we can't buy anybody!" at the end of the season when it's obvious they needed somebody in the midfield because Giggs/Scholes can't play 2 or 3 times a week 9/2/2010 9:03:37 AM |

well i wouldve liked another attacking midfielder, but SAF obviously didnt. and he never claimed they were going after one...so im not sure that argument is relevant here
and scholes seems to be playing alright to me so far. hes prob the best CM playing in the EPL right now. plus anderson is back and healthy after playing a full game with the reserves.

no doubt Scholes is class
I'm just saying that the games add up and you can't expect those geezers to play in every game... and I personally wouldn't want to count on Anderson/Carrick to step up and replace them. Even odder that they let Cleverley go out on loan too...
Just seems like a really odd purchase when you had two known quality players available at bargains that could provide reinforcements where you need them and you overpay for an extremely unknown (even Fergie doesn't know much about him) quantity (who plays a position that you're not exactly hurting at) 9/2/2010 9:19:24 AM |

im not counting on carrick at all. i was kind of hoping he would be sold and gibson would play more in carrick's role. i still believe anderson will do well. hes got a lot of pace and an endless engine to run around on the field. plus hes a great passer.
SAF sees these players everyday at practice, so he must like what he sees. im def glad he didnt go out and buy van der vaart. that guy has always been overrated imo. ill be interested to see how he does at tottenham, but they already have modric who plays that exact same position for them so who knows how that will pan out. 9/2/2010 9:29:42 AM |

Freidel and Warnock are PISSED about Houllier.
Nice to see you guys aren't bashing the Roon-dogg just yet.
We all know he's got a history with hookers, but this story seems to have too many holes (ucwidt?) and the ho allegedly received 400k from the two papers for her "story." 9/7/2010 1:04:55 PM |

I'm not bashing him bc I don't give a shit about these affair/hooker scandals involving athletes (unless it involves your teammate's bitch) 9/7/2010 1:15:46 PM |

I can totally understand why Friedel and Warnock wouldn't like it, but they were different players then. Hopefully he won't mess things up and they keep Macdonald on the first team, the players seem to like him.
Whatever for Rooney though, he's not exactly the poster-child for good behavior. I still like him as a player.
