I'm not sure if this has been discussed on here, but I thought I would mention to see if anyone else had heard it.
One of my professors is a big college basketball fan and has some mutal friends with a few ACC coaches and is actually friends with Bobby Cremins. He claims it is a well known fact among college coaches that no one wants to work under Debbie Yow. Yow was hired the same day as Skip Prosser's funeral and Gary Williams allegedly said that if he wasn't at the funeral it would be the happiest day of his life because we had taken Yow away from Maryland.
This is all hearsay, but I usually trust the things that this professor says and he isn't really prone to making things up whole cloth. He seems to think that as long as we have Yow, we won't be able to attract top coaching talent.
Anyone else heard this? 3/14/2011 1:46:00 PM |

In all seriousness, Debbie does have the rep of being a micromanager and i also wonder how many coaches will want to work for a woman. (Hate to say it, but it's true)
The best thing about Yow is that she holds people accountable, though. (Which is partially why she has the 'hard to work for rep') Even if Yow does have a bad rep in some coaching circles, she's 10x better than what we had and she seems competent in what she's doing.
She also used to be a bball coach and knows the game well...I think/hope that'll translate into a good hire whoever that may be.

You can say all you want about Debbie Yow, but I know I would love to work for a boss that is as open as she is about expectations and offers to get you what you need. If someone is scared to work for her because she holds them accountable, fuck them...they need to be held accountable.
The lady is an open book and whichever coach we get will receive every resource they need to make something happen from her and our chancellor. 3/14/2011 2:08:11 PM |

The 'Sidney Lowe Show' must go on
Quote : | "By Joe Ovies Updated 18 minutes ago
9commentsPOST VIEW Sidney Lowe's departure from NC State has become a matter of when, and how, rather than if. While it seems everyone has the inside scoop as to what is going on, athletic director Debbie Yow doesn't appear concerned with throwing meat into the Wolfpack rumor grind.
That's why tonight will be business as usual. The "Sidney Lowe Show" will air live from Crabtree Valley Mall on 99.9 FM The Fan and other affiliates at 7 p.m., Monday.
Yow is certainly taking an interesting approach. Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and others are filling up headlines after purging their coaches. But none of those schools are in a situation like NC State. The national folks are just waiting for a green light to fill up column space with cliches about the Wolfpack job or "I told you so" about Herb Sendek.
Put yourself in Yow's position. While the main goal is to hire the right basketball coach, there is a perception battle that needs to be won on multiple fronts. From how to handle Lowe's dismissal to how long the coach search takes, it matters. The amount of time in-between the firing and hiring is crucial. Don't believe me? Rewind to the Lee Fowler led search and see how that time frame worked out. " |

Just throwing this out there, but does anyone see a situation where Lowe stays on as an assistant of some kind? Not sure if there's precedent for that happening, or that it would even be something Yow would consider, but Lowe did have some success in the NBA as an assistant. 3/14/2011 3:45:19 PM |
PackBacker All American 14415 Posts user info edit post |
that would depend on the coach. Coaches pick assistants, you cant force one on them. It's more likely he's offered a position in the athletics dept, but not sure he'd accept.
IMO, he'll go back to the NBA

^^^^That's been in the rumor mill for a few weeks. Some say that the department is negotiating a graceful resignation or reassignment into the athletic department. The reasoning behind it is Lowe's importance to NC State's basketball history...like, back in '83, not now
Quote : | "If someone is scared to work for her because she holds them accountable, fuck them...they need to be held accountable." |
That's what I think. If a coach can't handle working for a bitch, then what are we to expect out of the team? We would get Butch fucking Davis over here for a basketball coach.

I'd be really happy with Shaka Smart, and you should too.
- super smart guy - tenacious defense - tourney experience at each level he's coached at - has accomplished a lot before the age of 33, and probably hasn't met his ceiling yet
Mike Anderson would have been great, but from the sound of things, Smart plays a similar style. 3/14/2011 4:11:20 PM |

no. it'd be like firing the president of the company and offering him the opportunity to be the new guy's secretary.
if lowe didnt' have the opportunity to make $oklahoma in the NBA then I could MAYBE see him being moved to a non-coaching role in the athletic department.3/14/2011 4:13:39 PM |

There are quite a few mid majors I'd look at before Smart. I've watched his teams, I wasn't that impressed.
And they do NOT play tenacious defense....maybe under Grant
And where else has he coached at (At least as a head coach)?
FIELD GOAL PCT DEFENSE G FGM FGA Pct 1. Drexel 31 652 1630 .400 2. Old Dominion 33 695 1720 .404 3. Georgia State 31 627 1548 .405 4. George Mason 32 706 1736 .407 5. Delaware 31 711 1684 .422 6. James Madison 32 745 1752 .425 7. William & Mary 32 782 1806 .433 8. UNC Wilmington 31 750 1728 .434 9. Hofstra 32 788 1798 .438 10. VCU 34 837 1851 .452 11. Northeastern 31 751 1584 .474 12. Towson 30 825 1698 .486
They're also 7th in scoring defense
Tenacious, yo
He's in what...year 3? Taking over a very successful program from Grant. No way in hell we hire him.

A lot of people like Chris Mooney, but I'm not sure how much I can handle that offense
