With all of the trouble the Canes have had lately, it's time for a feel-good story...well, kind of....
Friends Busted For Fire Hydrant Backyard Ice Hockey Rink
Quote : | "It sounds like a Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson comedy: Best friends decide to make a backyard ice hockey rink, end up stealing water from a school fire hydrant and get nabbed by cops. Only this isn't some Hollywood production, it's reality!
Police caught two buddies illegally using water from a fire hydrant in order to make a really cool backyard ice rink. Tony Nelin and Timmy Ryan, each 20 and from the suburbs outside Chicago, thought it would be "productive" to have the ice rink over the frigid winter months in Tinsley Park.
One of the kid's parents signed off on building the backyard rink for $350.
The innovative youngsters, along with a couple of other friends, began filling it with water from a garden hose last week. After close to four hours, they decided it was going be too expensive. The friends borrowed 250 feet of fire hose from a relative who works for the fire department to finish the rink framed with lumber. The homemade frozen pond even includes a penalty box, according to the Chicago Tribune.
These puck lovers would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for a meddling school janitor. The custodian at Tinsley Park High School discovered the fire hose connected to a running fire hydrant on school property and called police. Officers used expert detective skills, following the hose through a wooded area and right to the 91' by 43' partially frozen backyard ice rink.
Nelin and Ryan were given citations for tampering with a school fire hydrant. With a court date next month, they're expected to have to pay for the water. Both accused water thieves didn't think it was a big deal. "I really just thought it was water," Nelin said. "I didn't think it was this big of a problem."
The Chicago Tribune reports they used an estimated 26,000 gallons. That's a lot, but in the end the expected bill for the water will be close to $130 dollars. The good news is that they will be able to keep the backyard rink because it was built on private property, and therefore it doesn't need a special building permit.
The four friends plan to split the expected fine and water fee." |

All you have to know about Kirk Muller:
Quote : | ""You can't play nervous," Muller said. "I know young kids have to earn their time, but I think you have to put them in a spot where they can excel. If you keep throwing them on the fourth line when they come up, they're going to be out of their element."" |

The difference between the playing time that Bowman got under Mo versus last night epitomizes how every single thing about Paul Maurice is "play not to lose."
While that works with certain talent groups (it was perfect for the '02 team), it doesn't work with kids, especially kids with speed and hands.

I really should read and clarify my posts... but it's hard to break habits. All for player safety and such meaning being more proactive on boarding, knee-on-knee, shots to the head, etc... but also hooking and interference being watched closely speeds the game up. At higher impact pace, major injuries like these are going to rise.
It might just be that I am keeping up with the league as a whole more this year than ever before, but it seems like everyday someone else has a concussion. Obviously it is amplified when 3 of the Canes are plagued by one right now.
I did say professional sports, not just hockey, and the coverage on concussions is just crazy. Without posting a novel, I think a serious look in to the equipment needs to be done by both the NFL and NHL. Not only with concussions, but with A/MCL's also. Perhaps part of the craziness is that there is more traceability and accountability required by the league and organizations, but I don't think speeding the game up is going to help in the trend of concussions rising.
And yes, the concussions have a massive negative impact on players post career a la LaFontaine, Lindros, etc etc... I think my ultimate point is,
I hope that wasn't hodgepodge... 12/21/2011 7:30:15 PM |

Get rid of hard-capped shoulder and elbow pads and you'd have a lot less concussions.
A) Because the pads would be less weapon-like.
B) Because no one is going to dip his shoulder at a skull if he's going to break his collarbone in the process.
Same goes for football helmets. In the leather helmet days, no one was using their helmet as a weapon. With the technology involved in helmets today, you could probably be 90% as safe as you are now even without the hard shell (look at bike helmets, the hard outer shell is practically non-existent), and just as safe once someone made an effort to design a proper helmet with that concept in mind.
Now everyone will say I'm crazy, but this overkill equipment has made everyone fearless. If you're worried about injuring yourself by throwing a dangerous hit, you're much less likely to throw it. 12/22/2011 7:23:33 PM |
