Automatic downloads is live already.
Go to settings, store, then wait for it to update and you'll see new sliders to enable automatic downloads for musics, apps, and books purchased on other apple devices. 6/6/2011 9:44:32 PM |

I have been playing around with iOS 5 for a couple hours on my iPhone 4. The 'Android' notification is very nice, pretty much works exactly as you'd expect, always registers the gesture and is nice and snappy. It also has a live weather, and stock 'widget' in it.
The on device setup was very nice, same questions/path as installing a new version of OSX, ie language select, region, wifi, etc.
iCloud has been awesome already, I went to iTunes on my fresh install and it told me I had 962 eligible downloads and I was able to effortlessly pull them down to my phone. I have photostream setup, and I will know more about the experience once I update my iPad as well.
Twitter posting can be done from pretty much anywhere, and as you'd expect it's painless and pretty.
All in all, its a much needed update. I will probably still need to JB, when the option comes. I will keep playing with this and report on any findings. Feel free to ask any questions as they come up. 6/6/2011 9:57:33 PM |

if they are adding notifications to the lock screen, then really all I'll need to jailbreak for is sbsettings and having 5 icons in a row. Tlert is pretty awesome too...nice not having to switch apps to answer a text. 6/7/2011 9:51:04 AM |

Fortunately, for the end user, the transition will be relatively transparent. iMessage has been integrated into the existing "Messages" app. If you would like to text someone, iOS 5 automatically checks to see if they are eligible to receive iMessages rather than the more costly standard text message" |

Then maybe you can cancel your texting plan. Even if I had an iPhone still, it wouldn't change much of anything for me. Too many people without iPhones. It'd be a lot more useful if they integrated a messaging service that already existed like Palm has, WP7 is about to, or Android probably will down the line (if they haven't already; I don't know)
Then again, you could've dropped the $10 on Beejive and already had this functionality across like 6 different protocols. Though I guess it wasn't 100% automatic like this is supposed to be.

^ that most likely would have been how things would have turned out if it wasn't for the Apple/Facebook beef from last year:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/02/apple-facebook-friction-erupts-over-ping/?partner=rss&emc=rss
I don't have a twitter account, and most likely wouldn't start one just because it's what my iOS device has. I know plenty of people that would though, unfortunately.
Maybe iOS 5.5 will let 3rd parties hook into these messaging interfaces...

^^ has it been laggy for you? I am not surprised bc its a beta 1 but I am having some serious battery drain and lagginess. This isn't uncommon for a first release though. I have had springboard crash on me a few times as well which has never happened to me before (on a non jb build). I am confident they will work it out. I am playing around with the iPad 2 API's that let you have indepent content on your TV/iPad via atv2, this has a lot of potential. I'm building a simple app that will replicate PK's in soccer. Stand in front of TV and hold iPad in your hands like a steering wheel, goalie kicks at you from screen, move hands and block. I don't have any of the graphics programmed but I have a fun proof of concept in the works using simple ui elements. Worried I may throw my iPad across the room playing but it's got a cool Kinect like feel to it, granted you're holding a big ass iPad instead of just moving hands in the air. 6/9/2011 6:38:05 PM |

^^Yes. Take it back to an Apple store and in 5 minutes you'll be leaving with a new phone.
That was my experience anyway. It helped that I had freshly installed a brand new copy of firmware 4.3.3 and nothing else (didn't sync afterwards). It ruled out the possibility of any sort of software issue and as soon as the genius saw that he grabbed a replacement phone and I was on my way. 6/15/2011 3:18:43 PM |

I wonder how many "casual" iPhone users (which I have to assume encompasses the majority of them) don't keep up with announcements like that. Practically every one I've talked to hasn't had a clue about any of the features of iOS 5 or know the first thing about it. Obviously, it's pretty safe to assume that anyone reading/posting in this thread is gonna be in the loop (thus why ncsuapex is catching shit for not already knowing) but I have to think that in the bigger picture, people like him are probably in the vast majority. 6/15/2011 9:41:55 PM |

FYI, your phone belongs to Apple, not you.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3641676/Apple-to-ban-iPhone-gig-filming.html
Quote : | "Apple to 'ban iPhone gig filming'
IPHONE users may soon be stopped from filming at concerts — as a result of new Apple technology.
The leading computer company plans to build a system that will sense when people are trying to video live events — and turn off their cameras.
A patent application filed by Apple revealed how the technology would work.
If an iPhone were held up and used to film during a concert infra-red sensors would detect it.
These sensors would then contact the iPhone and automatically disable its camera function.
People would still be able to send text messages and make calls.
The new technology is seen as an attempt to protect the interests of event organisers and broadcasters who have exclusive rights to concerts.
The companies are often left frustrated when videos of shows appear online via websites such as YouTube which let users watch them for free.
Apple filed for the patent 18 months ago — and it is thought if successful it will help them negotiate deals with record labels to sell content through iTunes. " |

ThePeter, I know you only post in this thread when you have haterade to pass out, but could you at least try to make your commentary be intelligent when you're hating? I suppose that's a lot to ask, but come on? How does that equate to Apple owning your phone in the slightest? Technologically speaking, that's not any different from movie theaters that disable cell tower communications while you're watching a movie. And Apple is known for filing patents for things that never see the light of day. This one seems like it would be very hard to actually put into place and pointless unless it was a technology that was implemented into every cell phone and camera on the market. It's also most likely easily defeated by jailbreakers. Bottom line, I'd be very surprised if this technology ever makes it to production. But hey, thanks for making sure that everyone is aware of the latest potential future negative feature that we might see in an iPhone someday. 6/16/2011 10:35:19 AM |

definitely pretty laggy at some spots, especially opening up new texts. also I had to turn off a lot of the push notifications from things like Instagram and Twitter because my battery was draining way too quickly. though I did enjoy when i had them on seeing the notifications at the top while I was doing other things. there's also a bit of lagginess when "editing" pictures.6/17/2011 4:49:36 PM |
