Oh really? That's what I mean when the read status doesn't update. I have to open the email app for the app badge to go away (if I read the email on another device).

I argue the "user experience" is better with an iPhone. We can just do more with our Androids.

I still really like my N5, but lately it stopped recognizing "Navigate Home" I checked and my home address was still saved in Maps. I even removed it completely for a day and then re-added our home address and then another time tried simply changing our home address to something else.
Instead of working, it simply does a google search for "navigate home" now 3/28/2014 11:13:41 AM |

hm. Nexus 5 won't make or receive calls now. Seems like the few quirks I've had over the past couple weeks are becoming more common. I've really loved this phone. Not sure if I need to try a factory reset or what. But, not being able to make or receive calls is no bueno. 3/30/2014 8:50:04 PM |

Any chance a newly installed app could be screwed up? I'm imagine a factory reset will take care of it.

I've had my DROID Maxx for a few weeks now and it's pretty awesome. Excellent battery life, which they tout as being the highest of any device, and just a great upgrade overall over my last phone. I tried the Wireless Display feature on a 55" Samsung tv and it is pretty cool. Only wish somebody would figure out how to root KitKat so I can use my ScreenCast app. 4/10/2014 4:03:41 PM |

Rooting is really easy. It just gives certain apps root access. Why would you not root it? I use Titanium backup to "freeze" all the carrier apps. It essentially removes them but it's a little easier to unfreeze them in case you screwed something up. 4/14/2014 2:21:48 PM |

i finally got internet service at my house (768K DSL from AT&T, the only thing available here )
so now i won't be depending on PDAnet for all my internetting and i can give up my unlimited data plan and get a new phone. i've still got a Droid X that i love and have put through hell, but i got pissed and spiked it one day and it developed 4 black dots on the screen and the battery is toast.
so what phones should i be looking at? i don't stay up-to-date with this stuff. 4/15/2014 9:33:19 PM |

NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
no music. long battery life is important. don't care about the camera as long as it's as good or better than the one on my Droid X.
battery life and durability are most important.
honestly, if i can look at weather radar and get GPS driving directions, i'm happy. that's the only real smartphone functionality i use besides email and googling random shit.

The Droid Maxx is advertised as having the best battery life, and it has a kevlar back so it's more durable than some of the other ones. I got one about a month ago so I'm biased.
But any phone can be pretty durable if you get an Otterbox Defender case for it.
Samsung's have removable batteries though, so if you bought a spare battery as well, that would solve that issue.
My advice is always to go into a Verizon/Sprint/whatever store and fiddle around with a bunch of them yourself and see what you like

I think the *best* phone available right now is the HTC One M8. It's got your durability covered with a metal body.
If you're not gonna be around a charger daily, and need ridiculous battery life, the Maxx or something with a removable battery would be a good option.

I'd give the M8 a try, and return it if it doesn't work for your uses.
Quote : | "HTC has equipped the HTC One (M8) with a battery that gives enough power that you can go through a full day without ever worrying about finding the nearest outlet. Yes, the 2,600 mAh battery may last you less than 10 hours if you’re constantly watching YouTube clips or trying to beat The Walking Dead in a single session, but that’s pretty much par for the course.
On our highest use day, we managed to kill the HTC One (M8) in just under 12 hours. But that’s the worst case scenario. Over the past 16 days, we’ve managed to use the phone 12 full days (from the time we woke up until the time we went to sleep) without worrying about the phone’s battery charge. On most days, the battery still had 15-20% charge. We also spent a few days to see just how long we could extend the life of the phone by not playing any games, capturing pictures of watching video. We finally plugged the HTC One (M8) into its charger after 39 hours. the remaining 3% charge could have gotten up to the 40 hour mark, but the One (M8) had already proven its point." |

The Galaxy S5 feels flimsy and cheap as shit, the M8 feels like a solid premium phone. The M8 was also much faster when I used both, the S5 often lagged (which I read is because of the TouchWiz interface).
I get about 9-10 hours on my M8 before getting the low batter notification, no idea how long it lasts after the low battery notification. I use my phone pretty frequently and always have GPS, Wifi, and BT turned on. 4/16/2014 7:36:48 AM |
