UGH i don't know if this is really the approp thread. but this question is about my iphone (amongst other things)
so i got an iphone 4 (a new white one SO TRES CUTE) and i have a macbook 2,1 (circa 2006) with the 2gz intel core 2 duo processor annnnd running mac os x 10.4.11. and i have a problem. i bet you know what it is!!!
it is itunes. i can't use my current version of itunes with my iphone. i can't update itunes because i am running osx10.4.11 and i have to have 10.5x or higher to update itunes. but since i have the intel macbook can't i just skip to 10.6 aka snow leopard?
so my questions:
do i have to get snow leopard? and if so, is there not a snow leopard download (i feel as though i know the answer to this is no, but figured i'd ask)? i mean i know you can download lion but i need the disc for snow leopard, right? what if i happened upon a torrent of it? that's bad right (but what if)? and if i get snow leopard should i just go ahead and upgrade to lion (you can't go from where i am straight to lion. blah)? i just didn't know if there were any other problems that i'd run into re: my iphone cooperating with my computer that would necessitate the jump from where i am to snow leopard to lion.
basically i just want to be able to use itunes with my iphone NOW and i don't know if theres anyway to do that. i'm guessing not. i just have to install snow leopard with the dumb disc which i don't have and will have to wait for. but i'd also like to avoid other issues in the future where i plug my phone into my computer and it gets all aggro and is like, your shit is too old.
but if you know anything i don't or if i am missing something here i'd appreciate the help. i am new to iphone land (my ipod worked and still works fine with my version of osx, but it is a pretty old nano so). i was just trying to put songs on it so i could go running haha. 7/28/2011 11:00:10 PM |

Find someone with a Mac with Snow Leopard, download Lion, right-click the installer app, open the "resources" folder, "restore" the disk image to a USB flash drive with GUID partition map of at least 4GB in size, back up your computer, boot off Lion USB drive, wipe your drive, install fresh Lion copy, use Migration Assistant to restore your settings. 7/28/2011 11:24:04 PM |

Quote : | "AT&T confirmed to BGR that it will soon begin revoking unlimited data plans from jailbroken iPhone users and other smartphone users who utilize unauthorized tethering and mobile hotspot solutions. Following reports from earlier this year, AT&T on Thursday confirmed that it will remove grandfathered unlimited data plans from accounts belonging to users who tether or use unsanctioned mobile hotspot apps without a tethering plan, which is expressly prohibited by AT&T according to its terms and conditions. “Earlier this year, we began sending letters, emails, and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren’t on our required tethering plan. Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers,” an AT&T spokesperson told BGR via email. The letter outlines three choices for customers who had been making use of unauthorized tethering solutions, one of which is “Do nothing and we’ll go ahead and add the tethering plan on their behalf — after the dated noted in their customer notification.” According to earlier reports, offending users will automatically be bumped to AT&T’s more recent tiered data plan, which affords 2GB of smartphone data and 2GB of tethering data for $45 each month compared to AT&T’s old unlimited smartphone data plan, which costs $30 each month but does not include tethering. A new report from 9to5 Mac claims that users will begin losing unlimited plans as soon as August 11th, but AT&T did not confirm that date." |

as an update, I took my flaky iPhone 4 in to the Mac store. Convinced the 'genius' that it was a hardware issue and not due to having too many apps open in the background as he was suggesting, and they replaced it with a brand new phone.
It was out of warranty by about 2-3 weeks.
my suggestion: bring it in. 8/5/2011 10:11:59 AM |

We all knew this of course ... but I like how they explain again why paying for text messages is akin to being very blatantly ripped off.
http://gizmodo.com/5832245/atts-new-text-plan-overcharges-you-by-10000000
Quote : | "AT&T charges $25 for 2 gigabytes of mobile data, which states how much they think their bits and bytes are worth. That comes out to 80 megabytes per dollar. 80 megabytes will get you 500,000 text messages—assuming you're writing the largest possible message, which you're often not (i.e. "Hey" "Nothing" "lol").
Now divide that dollar by the 500,000 potential texts. That comes out to $0.000002 per text—two ten thousandths of a cent. A very, very, very small amount of money.
Now, let's say you send 5,000 texts a month. That's a large, though wholly realistic number. Multiply that by the above worthless cost per text, and you've got—hold onto your wallet!—$0.01. A penny for five thousand texts, according to how much AT&T says its data is worth in a data plan.
But outside of the data plan? Oh boy! Things get very different very fast. And by very different, I mean inordinately overpriced. Those same 5,000 texts, at a rate of $0.20 per message, will cost you $1,000. Not a penny—a grand. Two very different prices for literally the exact same thing." |

Quote : | "Just don't be cheap and pay for unlimited." |
It has nothing to do with being cheap. Even if texting were free, I still just don't see myself using it more than a dozen, maybe 30 times a month. Before when there was a $5 per month for 100 texts option I allllmost signed up for it but couldn't quite justify the waste of money. But now, $20 a month is the only option? Or $30 if you're on a family plan like I am. For something that's practically free? Not gonna happen. I just wish so many people weren't dumb enough to overpay for texting (read: everyone that pays ANYTHING for texting) so that AT&T wouldn't be able to get away with this shit.8/18/2011 11:29:11 PM |

i've sent almost 2300 texts this billing period, which started on the 2nd. how would you like me to not overpay for that? 8/19/2011 12:03:38 AM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
You've missed my point. The fact that you're paying anything above your normal data rate means you're overpaying. No matter if you send 1 text or 10,000.
How many emails did you send this month? You probably don't know, or care, because when ISPs started out, nobody had the brilliant idea to start charging you on a per-email basis. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of texting. 8/19/2011 12:14:46 AM |

Yeah, the text thing sucks balls. I think that data usage is going to be a big debacle, too.
In unrelated news, I'm not normally one to pay for apps--it has to be very useful to get me to shell out any money. However, I did spend $10 on FourTrack last night. It's just what it sounds like--multitrack recording for your iPhone. It doesn't have the features of a DAW or anything--it's pretty much the electronic, cell-phone equivalent of using an old 4-track recorder (except that it's easier and better than fumbling with tapes).
I recorded a cover of Neil Young's "Down By the River" last night. The first limiting factor seems to be the iPhone's built-in mic...it distorts easily at relatively low volumes. It's still cool, though.. 8/22/2011 11:24:22 AM |
