Has anyone been able to find ammo anywhere? I have checked every site that I know of, plus the ones google returns. I also go through 3 walmarts every other day.
I can't find 9mm or .40. Even .357sig is out nearly everywhere.
I'm at the point where I can't go to the range and shoot or I'll be out of ammo. 3/14/2013 6:01:43 PM |

thing is, reloading components were/are subject to panic buying as well. they did seem to start to rebound a little quicker than factory ammo. luckily, i had a decent stockpile simply because reloading components are cheaper in bulk. but now we're at a point where you can find most components if you know enough places to look. ammo hasn't gotten back to that point yet.

I was sitting on 1500+ rounds of every caliber. I though that ammo would return before I ran out, as I don't really shoot that often. Now I'm down to 3-500 per caliber. The problem is that my usual outing is 500 rounds of center fire and 1-200 rimfire.
I'm going to go to the range next week, but I may have to stick to maybe 200 rounds total. 3/14/2013 6:54:57 PM |

I got into reloading x54R when I had a PSL that I was working on. I don't have it any more, so those dies haven't been used in at least a couple years.
I don't have a lot of 45-70, maybe 100 pc. total, so I'm not ready to part with any of it. If you bring what you have, we can load it up. It's kinda hard to find spent brass for that, so what little bit I have is from the few boxes of commercial loads I've bought for it at the $rape prices that 45-70 has always gone for (~$1-2 a round). I don't even want to know what it goes for now.
Here are all the molds I have in case anyone else is interested in using them:

^thanks, i've got some 45-70 dies i just need to cast some bullets and find more brass. looks like you can get starline brass for 50-65cent each. i might just buy a hundred or so, with my loads i don't think i'll wear it out quickly. I'll be shooting through an 1873 & 1884 springfield trapdoor so i'll be keeping loads on the light side.
i've never cast my own bullets before, i assume it's a pretty straight forward process. do you water quench yours?
i would also like to cast some 30-30 bullets while were at it.
do i need to smelt it and bring ingots or just bring raw weights?
[Edited on March 15, 2013 at 12:52 PM. Reason : ingots vs raw weight] 3/15/2013 12:35:07 PM |
FenderFreek All American 2805 Posts user info edit post |
For all the rifle bullets and/or anything that needs a gas check, I always water drop. Stuff destined for non-magnum handgun loads, no need - they come out perfectly air cooled on a pile of wet towels.
Having clean ingots makes the process go faster since cleaning up a pot of lead takes a few minutes, but it's not a big deal if all you have is a bucket of weights. Figure about 20 minutes a pot dedicated to picking out clips, sorting zinc weights, and fluxing until it comes clean. If you want to clean up a bunch and make ingots, I have a muffin pan that I use to make them, and it works pretty well 3/16/2013 6:46:24 AM |

Thinking of selling my lower but not sure if it would fetch more if I built it first. I can get a lower build kit from PSA w/o fire control for $99 and I have a spare GI trigger laying around that I could throw in it. to be honest, prices are going down. you may find a sucker. but its not easy making $300 on a lower anymore.. even if it has its parts kit installed. PSA is always posting up lowers for $120
if you dont need the money, may be worth building up over time if you have the parts. 3/17/2013 6:43:54 PM |

FYI: All ATK ammunition at Lawmans' is now restricted sale according to the sales clerk I spoke with this morning. That covers Federal, Speer, Blazer, American Eagle, CCI, etc... That means sales to public safety personnel only. Remington and Hornady ammunition is still being sold to the general public, but ATK brands comprise the majority of Lawmans' stock. 3/20/2013 11:53:24 AM |

I was told they had a new contract and those where the terms. I guess they have to justify their super-cheap pricing.
It just occurred to me that it's probably an effort on someone's part to make sure ammunition supply to law enforcement is minimally effected by the current super-high demand.

Blazer in good ammo and I'd shoot it without hesitation.
As for steel case ammo, most of it is Russian. The case isn't the problem. The problems are the fact that the QC is poor and the ammo can be inconsistent and that Russian bullet jackets aren't pure copper. They have steel or some other hard metal mixed in and they wear out your barrel faster. Of course, the savings are such, at least with rifles, that you can by a new barrel and still come out money ahead. 3/21/2013 9:37:12 AM |
