has the Sid Squad put up a single good argument as to why we shouldn't blame these type of god-awful performances on the coach or are they all too concerned with hating on the whiners? 12/22/2010 11:46:55 PM |

Actually, tonight was some god damn horse shit and I don't know who to blame. Still not gonna be a total cock licker and bitch like we need Sidney to be fired.
However...if that shot had gone in I would have strongly considered shooting myself in the face.
^How about that every god damn one of them isn't on the team. Maybe other teams are allowed to play a decent game against us. How about that every fucking night you're not gonna come out blazing from 3 and clicking on all cylinders. Not that tonight was either of those because we sucked all around, but jesus christ it gets old to listen to every fucking game win or lose.

In how many games would you say we played "good" and how many would you say we played "bad"?
Because there are a bunch that fall into the 2nd category and very few in the first.12/23/2010 12:02:51 AM |

Those statements aren't mutually exclusive. We don't care how the coach manages to win, we just want to see wins... That doesn't mean that if the team wins then the coaching/playing was good enough or close enough to perfect to not receive critiquing. There are always places for improvement from any team. The point is that as long as we win, Lowe can keep his job, even if we aren't playing top notch basketball. If we ARE playing top notch basketball... I suppose the whole conversation would be moot.
Nice try though, Ernie.12/23/2010 1:11:27 AM |

^^No
Tonight fit the "Bad" category. Wisconson did too. The others didn't really fit into either. I thought we played well all around vs. George Mason, and we've played well in stretches (last 30 minutes vs. YSU). Tonight however, was just a bad game from start to finish. I'd say we've had 3 like that all year. We had played well at Syracuse, and the first 28 minutes of the GT game as well.
As Ernie has been saying...its not black and white....unless you only look at the box score.

I kinda stopped following this thread a couple weeks ago, for the Lowe supporters, do they have a good run down of the excuses for why we aren't better than we are? Obviously, not having Smith is a problem, but what are the reasons why our group of guys can't handle teams like Delawho State without Smith? 12/23/2010 7:55:36 AM |

That performance is indefensible.
Thank god we got the win.
At this point I think its mental and the players aren't responding well to not being as good as they expected themselves to be 12/23/2010 8:24:47 AM |

Being 6 points away from beating a top ten team on their home court (WITHOUT OUR BEST FUCKING PLAYER) can not be construed as playing bad. Sorry to rain on your hate parade
deleware and youngstown had two very striking similarities. Their starting lineups were without any real low post players. On one end of the court they could exploit that matchup by drawing our frontcourt out on the perimeter (most of their successful plays involved getting our bigs lost on the perimeter switching screens). On the other end of the court we had trouble exploiting that matchup because our front court isn't proficient at posting players up.12/23/2010 9:32:28 AM |

We actually did a prett ecent job of this against Delaware St. the problem is that Howell (in the beginning) and Painter (in the end) were getting into those post positions and then missing what should be gimme baskets.
Howell scoring a career high 17 (or 18?) points in that game is a clear indication that we did a better job going to our post and working the ball in, those guys just need more practice to learn to finish better.

us without tracy= team that has to hit a last second shot to beat Deleware State.
us with tracy= tournament team.
us next year= something even better, or else people would already be through with Sid.

Conditioning? Inability to guard on perimeter (every big man I know)? The taped up ankle?

How many teams beat Duke last year? His system obviously works if it is fucking run well. I think Lowe's system is complex (tough for freshman to pick up and run with) and was centered around getting the ball into the post to our most viable and experienced scorer. You remove the cornerstone of our offense and ask freshmen to somehow pickup the scoring from the perimeter against a perimeter oriented team and you get situations like we ran into last night. Our post players were incapable of making a shot unless they were wide open (with the exception of an occasional shot by Howell) and were getting burned on the perimeter.12/23/2010 11:05:23 AM |

^ I've literally never seen a system so complex that it turns freshman of this level into what these guys have been.
And pointing out that Duke win over and over will not make his career. The full body of work, given the resources at his disposal, illustrates a squandering of opportunity. 12/23/2010 11:16:00 AM |

Running the same system and being unable to adapt when it fails is why Paul Westhead can only coach in the WNBA now.

How much do some good ACC tournament wins mean when you consider that the rest of his body of work?
What from the rest of his seasons makes you say "well, he's sure shown me he belongs coaching upper tier NCAA basketball"? The inability to find any sort of system that fits the players he has? The awesome dry spells? The seeming inability to prepare for simple games? 12/23/2010 1:41:26 PM |

It's true, while they may not realize it, a lot of sports fans actually have more fun watching sports when their team is struggling. I saw a study on it a year or two ago. I forgot how they came to that conclusion though. But you can definitely see it on message boards. When they have a good win or string of wins, they'll disappear. But when they're not meeting expectations (or winning national championships), they're all "BARKBARKRAWRBARKRAWR!!!!!!!1"
It's obvious that some posters get off-on on bitching and complaining. That's not to say that some of the bitching and complaining isn't warranted. 12/23/2010 3:01:52 PM |

Harping on sidneys offensive scheme is just baffling and stunningly incorrect.
2007: offense ranked 46th nationally, missing atsur for a large chunk of the season, after losing bennerman, simmons, brackman, bethel, and evtimov. That's impressive, no one would argue that its not
2008: offense ranked 90th nationally (everyone is in agreement this season sucked, but we had no D1 PG on the roster either)
2009: offense ranked 30th nationally! 30th, how can you argue that isn't relatively impressive for a 3rd year coach?
2010: offense ranked 109th nationally. Clearly this was due to personnel. There isn't a coach in the country that could get mays or degand to make an open 3 pointer. We tried playing horner to improve our offense and he ended up costing more points on the other end than he could score...
2011: ranked 67th on offense and would likely be in the 30-40's if we had tracy smith, who no one would argue isn't one of the best offensive players in the country
Its really been DEFENSE that has plagued us while sidneys been here but I think now that we are getting legitimate ACC talent we can improve in that area. We were a pretty good defensive team last year and I think we can get back to that.
I think if johnny thomas had known smith would be out with an injury for so long he may have stayed. That sure would have cured a lot of our problems so far this year on the defensive end and on the glass 12/23/2010 3:50:58 PM |

^ None of which ever played any actual meaningful minutes for Herb. Don't forget Mccauley was a perimeter oriented big man who Sid Lowe and co had to mold into a more traditional post player.
