Because they're overwhelmingly ignorant and find endless ways to justify whatever he does through their whataboutism. They don't want to admit what they likely know is true. In some cases, they hear frequent political messages from their religious leaders. If you try to ask them to defend their positions, they mostly just change the subject to whatever Fox News talking point they just heard. Watch some Jordan Klepper videos on the YouTubes. It's a masterclass in tying people like this in knots, usually without them even knowing.

Look I hope he's fucked, but enough things have gone horrible on the last 7-8 years (or longer for life in general ) that it'd better for my mental health to just expect the worst, and celebrate when I'm wrong.

This is definitely the sort of stuff that 100% lands you in federal, pound-me-in-the-ass prison...and it sounds like they've got him 100% dead to rights.

It's early and there's a lot of information not out there, but I think the only things that could save him this time are if:

1. the government gets a conviction, but lets him off with some token punishment with the rationale of preserving some semblance of societal harmony--i.e., some level of mitigation of upsetting the cult.

2. Some MAGA-dumbass hangs the jury. I mean, they've succeeded with what, 2 grand juries and a civil trial jury in the last month or two, but it seems like it would be very easy to get a cult member on the jury who is not going to convict under any circumstances, ever, no matter what, regardless of the crime or the evidence or the law.
