Yes to both questions. Probably will be stiff for a little while. I am going to go with IC in both barrels.

darkone are you installing a bullet guide as part of your conversion process?

if so just buy whatever AK mags are cheapest. ive never had feeding issues with any mag in any ak ive ever owned.

granted i never really abused them, but i did shoot a wide variety of ammo (and mags). obviously dont buy some of the corroded junk you see at gunshows sometimes.

if you arent installing a bullet guide youre probably limited to SUREFIRE, which ive always had a positive experience with no matter what type of saiga/caliber i was shooting. good luck finding those anywhere right now.

Picked up a Delton stripped lower this morning. Prices have finally come down to reasonable.

I just need a quality BCG at a reasonable price and I will be happy. I want to sell my old upper and maybe the whole gun but I need the BCG for now. You would think places would put those things into overdrive, they are always the part that is out of stock.

Just to keep the thread lively... Anyone have any purchase planned for the near future? Feel free to critique what I have in mind:

a) CZ-527 carbine (7.62 x 39) a gun that has always been interesting to me.

b) Ruger Guide Gun (30-06) overpriced but also interesting. Maybe not the most attractive thing I've ever seen?

c) Any number of Ruger and CZ safari rifles (for reloading interests mostly 458, 416, 375, 9.3 x 62, etc).

d) Shorty Mauser sporter (30-06) just because?

Need to sale my last Marlin first.

i shot a buddy's CZ 527 in .223 a few weeks ago. that thing was pretty awesome. i can see where one in x39 would be very handy. 30-30 ballistics in a short little mini-mauser. my only gripe is i'd prefer aperture sights.

[Edited on March 30, 2013 at 10:21 PM. Reason : i'd get the guide gun in .308 instead of '06]

The Ruger Guide Gun isn't made in 308.

That scout rifle of their's is, but I'm not a huge fan of it. Too expensive for what it is as well.

Any other comments on the CZ 527?

yeah but it does give you an idea of what will happen...

i got my 8mm mauser full power ammo cheaper than you can find .223

and to me.... that's just nuts that the left round costs less then the right two

That isnt what I would consider to be full power, but I guess you could shoot it through a chrono and make me look stupid.

NRR yes the Guide Gun is overpriced as well, but is a far more confused weapon (imo).

That's about 4000 joules* but a great load.

It aint 8mm if it aint 198gr.

But my mistake, that is full power. I have a bunch of PPU 303 and it' good stuff.

A stripped lower for $130 at retail is reasonable considering what they have been for the past 5 months.

No, the Chinese ones are far inferior to the Russian ones, and all Mosins in general are already sort of junky.

Don't get me wrong, they get the job done, but Chinese versions of this (type 53 I think) are made of potmetal and the stocks typically look like dogs chewed them.

They are super dark too typically, which I don't really like, so I guess the dogs took a shit on them too when they were done.

I sold my last Russian M44 almost 2 years ago for $250. I posted that link because (especially given the current atmosphere) these seemed like a really good deal. Someone here should buy 6, let me pick out the best one for myself, and then sell the rest on CSC for a profit

In all seriousness though I buy guns to shoot, and I sold my M44 because it was just about the most unpleasant weapon ever to fire. The barrel is way too short for the cartridge, and the stock shape is complete shit for the recoil. 7.62 x 54r of course is plentiful and cheap, but I bet right now people are really fucking each other over on it.

They also don't shoot right unless you extend the bayonet which typically makes you look like a stupid dick. This bothers a lot of people too, you probably won't ever find an M44 with matching numbers.

Anyone know someone in the Raleigh area that could engrave a receiver for me? Alternately, anyone want to talk me out of trying to engrave a reveiver with a dremel tool? I'm contemplating going the self engraving route so that I'll have experience when I decide to Form 1 a homemade suppressor at some point in the future, but I'd also rather not have my first SBR end up looking like a kindergartner engraved it.

I don't think stamping is an option for a receiver.

I think that would be a good way to screw up the magwell. It takes a good bit of force to get the depth needed, and I foresee a receiver being cracked, or bent at least.
Probably not easy to do on a round surface cleanly either (for suppressor).

I'm afraid I'd crack the receiver with a letter punch if I got too heavy handed.

I can do engraving as well if you get in a pinch. CADD would be cheaper though.

obviously haven't read through this thread, so...

what would you guys recommend for a mule deer hunt, most shots likely being 300-500 yards out

leaning towards a 25-06. thoughts?

i'd recommend you practice a lot and make sure you're capable of ethical shots at such ranges. this is one of those things where your skills are much more important than your equipment.

i love when folks ask for advice and then get pissed because they didn't get the answer they wanted

there are dozens of cartridges that will get the job done. sitting around discussing them is pretty pointless, yet that's what novices like to do. everyone has an opinion. if there was one perfect 300-500 yd mule deer cartridge that stood above all the others, then you'd probably already have an answer.

as you progress from amateur to expert, you think less about equipment and more about methods and techniques.
