its so obvious that the reason the plane crashed, and the other planes, is because of the bunkers magnet that drew the key. The magnet screws with the compass and guidance and stuff liek that to make them crash.

During testing of the atom bomb in the marshall islands, there were recorded instances (castle bravo was one) that the radiation spread so far that scientists were trapped in underground bunkers and listening stations for long periods of time before they could be rescued.

now, i think that the "timer" must be reset to avoid another disaster that may be set off by an old computer system that cannot be shut down. so, the cover up faction needs someone to reset it manually over time - someone who is very healthy - and have convinced desmond that the world is gone by holocaust or something. Placed him in the hole under false pretense, he is the one that is left with the burden.

hurleys insane friend went crazy because he had to repeat the numbers over and over again, and hence the empty bunk and the crazy hospital. the number is also the "VIN" code of the location.

the flight from australia to the US is always flown over the marshall islands today.

no they said where hurley's friend came from. he went crazy b/c he became so obsessed with the numbers. if you have paid attnt, hurley is going down that path. they have shown him a few times mumbling the number to himself over and over. the fact that they perceive bad luck and that nobody believes them combines to be extremely stressful. it already pushed his friend over the edge and now it is working on him.

the only problem i have with this....

couldn't they come up with some sort of computer code to do this automatically? desmond's task seems more like a punishment. and punishment would factor into the the whole "the plane was meant to crash and all teh survivors are connected and it's their fate to all come here..." type of thing.

the other thing that this theory doesn't explain is how everyone is connected, why walt's importants, who the others are...all the things i dont' really care about really

the more interesting aspects of the story for me are: why the plane crashed, why they crashed on that island, and what's up with the island.

Ok first off the plane didn't really crash, it broke apart in the air and then fell to the ground. The magnetic field also seems very weak, Jack had to get close before it had any real effect. The magnetic field might have made them go off course, but i doubt it made the plane break apart in flight.

^^^^Desmond is the guy from the stadium that told Jack to believe in miracles, etc., before Sara found out she wasn't paralyzed. Then of course Jack and Sara got married and we don't know what happened after that except that now they are no longer together. I think that Desmond may have something to do with why they are not together anymore.

I still have no idea how the back half of the plane just snapped off. The magnetic field does not account for that at all.
By aerodynamic forces alone, it is completely impossible to snap a plane like that. The wings and tail will stall well before the plane would ever see those kinds of forces.
