So I finally picked this up today (woohoo!)

And after playing for about 2 hours, I have a question

Did anyone else seem to have trouble getting timing down on the drums? I swear I'm hitting 95-100% of the notes, but it seems like my red pad just doesn't respond sometimes...i'm not sure if i'm "rolling" a bit and therefore seeing a "missed" 2nd note, or what, but it's kinda frustrating

^could be a number of things

-check calibration first; if you're playing on a CRT, just select the default CRT setting and you should be getting 0 lag. otherwise, i'd suggest manually calibrating for lcds/plasmas (and you'll still have a small amount of lag)

-no original set that i've ever played on has perfect pads - it is rare that you'll register 1/16ths, for example...you either get a double hit or it doesn't register at all (very noticeable on songs like train kept a rollin' and dead on arrival). the only perfect solution i've heard of is modding, which, i believe, voids your warranty. if you're interested in a rather involved/extensive modding process - http://theflashspeaks.wordpress.com/2008/02/03/playing-rock-band-with-a-yamaha-dtxplorer-how-to/

-give the kit a test run during the opening of a song (before the drums come in) - if you're doing a roll on the drums and you're not hearing a roll, your pads could be faulty...though it should be fairly obvious if they are (if your pads are faulty, check out http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/rockband.php)

-also, which version do you have? the ps3 hardware is supposedly generally superior to the xbox 360

Thanks for all that info

I got the 360 version

I'm going to try those calibrations tonight, and the only mod I would like to do is something to quiet the drum sets when they are played on, I wouldn't want to void the warranty

voiding the warranty is kind of a non-issue b/c EA is being VERY generous with the warranties. Basically, I think they realize the hardware needs some work. I bought my set well over 3 months ago (90 days is the warranty period) and I just put in an RMA for a cracked drum pedal yesterday. They don't even ask when you bought the set or anything.

Singing and playing guitar at the same time is pretty much the most fun you can have with your pants on. Doing one without the other seems really boring to me now.

I like singing and playing drums at the same time, but you have to adjust the gain on the headset so that you don't pick up the noise of the drumsticks.

I'll say though, drums on easy is a lot harder than i thought it'd be

I thought I had read that they don't even use the kick pedal on easy, but that's obviously wrong, lol

I still haven't had a chance to try that calibration though...i'm really hoping I didn't get a defective drum right out of the box

I would love this game so much more if they had a "classic rock" version, or just a bunch of oldies.

I think those are the songs that pull in non-gamers.

Basically anything they end up playing at Rum Runners and the entire group is singing because it's a good song to shout along with, lol

^ agreed.

That's what the wife says she wants to happen before she'll play a lot.

Just give me a Rock Band 2, with no new instruments required, and a ton of new, popular, fun songs.

...

yeah right.

I'm sure RB2 will have all kinds of new things you have to buy, ugh

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. Sounds like you're getting Harmonix confused with EA/Activision. Harmonix has always been all about making all the hardware play nicely. It appears to be EA/Activision that wants you to have to buy all new hardware every 6 months.

very true

I was just assuming based on current video game trends

I guess I would say I would expect old instruments to still work, but there will be an option for an additional instrument

Or maybe adding backup singers?

Just What I Needed and You're All I've Got Tonight are both a blast to sing and play at the same time

most of the guitar parts are rhythm, with fun runs mixed in on expert.. My Best Friend's Girlfriend is the toughest one but it's still a couple tiers removed from the really hard stuff

i'm not a big fan, but a lot of the judas priest songs are fun to play

the music store is an awesome addition to the game - the ability to preview songs, compare difficulties, sort, etc. is loverly

it's impossible for harmonix to cater to everyone, but i think some of the more popular rock from the 90s/early 00s would please a lot of people (foo fighters, pearl jam, sublime, nirvana, RHCP, rage, etc.)

oh, and led zeppelin

^^ Sure it's hard to please everyone, but I was talking about the songs that people just like singing along with

If you're gonna play this at a party, you'd love for people watching to get into it as well and sing along, instead of sitting there thinking "who the heck is that?"

And also, what's the next step for Rock Band? With GH having custom song writing now, any chance Rock Band would let you import songs to play? Granted, that would pretty much kill the franchise right there, but how else do you top GH without making customers pay for more instruments?

So I've had this game for a month now, and I've loved everything about it.

One relatively subtle feature that pretty much rules is the ability of the crowd to sing along with you. Geez...talk about money.

Be honest, it's pretty fucking awesome to get to the chorus of "Say it Ain't So" and have the crowd belt it out in the background. AWESOME.

i think imitation (as opposed to difficulty) is harmonix's goal for RB

GH3's difficulty is artificial - they just stretch the timing window and cram in like 50% more notes than there should be

there are songs in RB that are very difficult band songs (metallica pack, thrash pack, rtth), and most of the difficulty comes from the smaller window (relative to GH3) you have to register each note, i.e., accuracy over mash and pray - i mean dragonforce? come on

that being said, it would be nice if there were more "impossible" band songs

true, but there are a number of great songs/bands that RB has introduced me to

I wonder if the main problem is that the only people that post on the Rock Band forums would never listen to the stuff I'm referring to?

Maybe the developers get their ideas from the forums?

who knows

so i was rocking out a bit too much (to Muse...of course) and broke my friends kick petal. like the top half (of the foot petal) cracked and separated. Anyone else have this issue and an easy fix? we are thinking about cutting a foot shaped piece of wood and attaching it on top of the petal connecting both pieces with some kind of super glue or something...

we can't find a website or anything that sells just the foot part by itself.

if anyone has any ideas message me.

I think people are right though about missing some great songs that people would get into in more of a "party" setting. There is yet to be DLC that are one of the songs I consider a favorite for me, and I have a pretty wide range of music that I listen to. The older stuff has missed the bands I like, and the newer stuff has some of the bands I like but not the songs.

That double bass pedal looks sweet though, anyone tried that yet?

^^ Yeah I'm definitely bringing my drum throne back when I go home next. Playing with just a regular chair hurts my back and neck like nobody's business.

When I played at home with the throne though, felt nothing negative at all.

And that pedal looks SWEET. If it wasn't $90...

Because the RB pedal sucks a lot on anything where you need quick, repeated bass beats.

"Ready to get your head spinning? This week are we really covering the spread. First we have a three pack of songs from Jimmy Buffett for $1.99 each (160 Microsoft Points) or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points) for the pack. Jimmy Buffett rerecorded the three songs for exclusive use in Rock Band, turns out he really digs the game.

Also along for the ride this week is the long-awaited Disturbed three-pack of songs from their new album INDESTRUCTIBLE. Best Buy recently announced they are partnering with MTV Games and Hamonix to offer Disturbed fans the opportunity to download two free tracks from the band’s highly anticipated new album, INDESTRUCTIBLE. By pre-ordering the album at http://www.BestBuy.com/disturbed, fans will receive instructions to download title track “Indestructible” and “Inside The Fire” for Rock Band from Xbox Live. Both of those songs will also be available to all Rock Band owners on 360 and PS3 along with a third track from the album "Perfect Insanity". Each Disturbed track will be available for $.99 per track (80 Microsoft Points) for a limited time, or $2.99 (240 Microsoft Points) for the three pack.

Tracks are as Follows-

"Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett (master - new original recording)
"Cheeseburger in Paradise" by Jimmy Buffett (master - new original recording)
"Volcano" by Jimmy Buffett (master - new original recording)
"Indestructible" by Disturbed (master)
"Inside the Fire" by Disturbed (master)
"Perfect Insanity" by Disturbed (master)"

haha yeah...maybe it's because he re-recorded those tracks specifically for RB? then again, 1.99 is the price for the majority of the DLC
