Metal Hammer is having a vote for the best death metal songs of all time on their site. You can vote for your top 10 out of the 111 they have nominated. It would be nice if they were listed in any sort of order whatsoever, but there's some good stuff nominated. You could certainly do a lot worse than to find these songs as a good overview to the history of death metal.
http://blog.metal-hammer.de/die-grten-death-metal-songs-aller-zeiten/
It also looks like they made an editorial decision to limit the nominees to one song per artist.

i would go for protest the hero since Ive never seen them. I saw AILD prob 4 or 5 times back in like 2003ish? Even though I am not a big fan anymore they are usually fun live. Butttt its a sunday and ill be driving back to SC. ill probably stop in columbia for a bit that night on the way through tho to chill with the advent and giant guys and hopefully catch their sets though 1/27/2009 11:34:14 PM |

Also, I was thinking that one of the songs on your myspace sounds like on of their songs called, "Legion of the Serpent". I was wondering if there was any influence... 1/27/2009 11:40:56 PM |

ill probably repost this somewhere in entertainment since I think a lot of people that would like this dont read this thread since its not a metal band. But i dono maybe sumf00, d7freestyler, or amac884, or Ronny and maybe a few others that post here once in awhile were Beloved fans back in the day.
Anywho Wes Richardson uploaded a video of them playing "kiss it goodbye" back in 2001. they closed like every set but 1 with that song out of the ridiculous amounts of times I saw them live and the crowd was nuts every time. Brought back some good memories.

I'm a metal noob, so recommend me some good bands. So far I know I like AILD and 5 Finger Death Punch. Stuff along those lines would be good. I like loud and heavy but not constant 23059808 / second double bass. Some change in melody and a singer who can actual sing instead of dog bark all the time is welcome too. I just downloaded Protest The Hero since there seem to be a number of people here who like them and they seem really good after a quick listen to a couple tracks.
I like a lot of hardcore, punk, etc, but finding the complexity of metal and metalcore more appealing these days... 1/28/2009 4:36:35 PM |

^^while i dont think we share the same taste in metal (ie i cant stand 5 finger death punch) I think I can take a stab at some bands that you would like based on what you described. they are all on myspace since im too lazy to post links atm:
Killswitch Engage Every Time I Die Trivium Haste the Day
Maybe between the buried and me?
I like 1 or 2 of those bands personally but not big on the rest, but I like I said, these are suggestions for you based on what you gave me to go off of.

Blues metal is not that common, and yeah, it's often crappy. What comes to mind for me when I hear that phrase is older stuff that's influenced by some of the bluesier Sabbath and Zeppelin material, or stuff like Aerosmith.
I dunno about harmonica specifically, but try looking into groups like Rhino Bucket, Kix, Pride and Glory (an earlier Zakk Wylde project that is worse than Black Label Society but more "bluesy"), Badlands (couple of guys who used to play with Ozzy and Sabbath), and Blue Murder. 1/29/2009 12:52:57 AM |

went from raleigh to columbia to see Advent, Giant, and Torch Runner before heading back to greenville last night; needless to say it was a lot of fun. Advent, although I am not a huge fan of them on CD, are realllly fun and heavy live. And Giant (well they had to change their name, now they are called "BraveYoung") was superb. They have changed their sound up a bit and have 0 vocals now. I guess they were trying to shed the Isis comparison and have gone a lot more atmospheric than heavy but it was a welcome change as it sounded very good live. Was closer to sigur ros and explosions in the sky now than isis or neurosis. 2/2/2009 9:51:25 AM |
