Anyone is certainly welcome to their opinion. Fact of the matter is that there's benefit to ensuring a non-commercial alternative with a focus on education and learning is available on television. An alternative not completely reliant on advertising for revenue. It benefits us all as a society to not have pure garbage on every channel.
Also, funding for PBS comes from other sources than the federal government such as corporations, universities, donors, local channels, etc...

I'm not sure I see a benefit for a media outlet to not be solely advertising based. PBS, depending on the affiliate, gets something like 15-50% of their funding from the government. Again, I don't see how PBS is any better than other media outlets. If you don't like Fox, MSNBC, etc., there are still alternatives. And other than old people and kids, no one watches PBS.

I'm not defending Romney; it was stupid of him to bring that up and yes, it's just a drop in the bucket on its own and the fiscal focus should be elsewhere. But since we're talking PBS funding, I was just giving my opinion. Not worth anymore time really

People are white knighting for big bird itt.

This is a free market economy. We do not need a government tv channel. If you want pbs pay for it like you do cartoon network. I'm not saying cancel pbs, just stop funding dumbshit.

The last republican took us from a surplus and 4.2% unemployment, to a deficit and 7.8% unemployment. I'll take 4 more years of Obama before I'll even consider seeing a republican in the white house.

I happen to listen to NPR every day on my way to work, if I actually sat down and watched hours upon hours of television like most Americans, I can guarantee it would be tuned into PBS more often than anything else...

Just because you're a vapid moron who probably DVRs 1000s of hours of reality television a year and eats hot cheetos by the pawful, doesn't mean that educated, young adults don't benefit from public broadcasting. Christ

NPR != PBS

NPR is much better than PBS.

And you already admitted it... you don't watch PBS.

And still, neither really require government assistance. There's a reason other media outlets are hugely successful and don't require government money.

And just like a true idiot, you have no real argument, so you stoop down to personal attacks full of false assumptions!

Random racist NPR quote.

If you want NPR pay for it. I don't want to pay taxes so idiots get to listen to a talk show on the way to work. I don't want to pay taxes so you can watch big bird. You people are part of the 47% . YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO HAVE PBS AND NPR.

Pretty much every other televised/radio media outlet is driven by ratings to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Absolutely no one has said that a media outlet can't be successful without receiving some level of funding from the government - I'm not really sure where you got that from, or why you're arguing against this.

What was said:

Quote :
"Fact of the matter is that there's benefit to ensuring a non-commercial alternative with a focus on education and learning is available on television. An alternative not completely reliant on advertising for revenue.....
Also, funding for PBS comes from other sources than the federal government such as corporations, universities, donors, local channels, etc...

"

I think you need to realize that content on a channel is in part determined by what advertisers are willing to pony up the dough. By divorcing itself from advertising revenue, PBS allows itself the autonomy to broadcast educational material instead of honey boo boo

Trying to fix the economy by cutting funding to PBS is the same is fixing your household financed by saving 1 penny on your phone bill.

Sure a penny saved is a penny earned, but if it took you 6 months of arguing about it in congress is the penny maybe not worth it?

Maybe, to fix your household finances you should look at your record breaking department of defense spending and the fact that you are proposing to give them even more than they are asking for!

maybe I should restate that.

When compared to actual educational institutions and other media outlets, PBS is pretty far down on this list.

Even if PBS is doing nothing, and is an absolute waste of money, its a terrible thing to target considering the political time and costs and the insignificant returns if winning.

The only logical thing to do if being serious is to slash DOD spending.

Yes, we've already conceded that PBS funding is a grossly small sum when compared to the budget and that it's not a political issue that our government should waste time on arguing, and that massive cuts are needed elsewhere, and that mitt was a moron for even mentioning it.

Gladly

but not because we 'have nothing else'. It's because common fucking sense seems to glide right over your head, causing you to respond by attempting to distort the argument. For example,

"ah yes, it is idiotic to say that a media outlet can be successful without receiving 15-50% of its funding from the government.
"

or the dumbshit comment about educating millions though PBS

On NPR/PBS: I listen to NPR every day. I like NPR, and I like PBS. Many other people feel the same.

The fact that I enjoy those stations and listen to them in no way justifies their funding from the federal government. I enjoy and make use of many great goods and services, and I don't mind paying for them. I reject that idea that it is ever moral to force others to help fund things that you use and enjoy. If you like them enough, you'll support them. If you don't like them enough to support them, you're kind of just a dick that wants others to pay the bill for your entertainment.
