What I would recommend is dl'ing the file from that like I provided (last page).
Any iPhone IPSW file is stored locally on your machine. You can access these directly at the following locations:
Mac OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Windows Vista & Windows 7: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
So...once DL'd, place the file in the specific folder, then open iTunes again. 10/12/2011 1:45:18 PM |

hmm. with the new icloud, doesnt it sync you phone to everything? im afraid it might use the most recent sync as your newest sync and erase stuff from your other macbook. but i have clue. i actually havnt read up on any of the new FUTURES. haha. someone else can chime in10/12/2011 2:07:34 PM |

wtf?
nvm i figured it out. I have the 3g, not the 3gs like I thought. No update for that model.

Staggered roll-out? Or maybe they're shutting off new downloads until their servers cool down a bit.

error 3200 is the apple servers failing.
the updater needs to talk to the server right before it does the actual install for who knows why and that part fails cause their servers are hosed.
god itunes is such a piece of shit. i'll be happy to uninstall it forever after this (if it ever works) 10/12/2011 3:30:56 PM |

idk about iOS5, but you've been able to get gmail push for quite sometime, just by setting your gmail account up as a microsoft exchange account.

Finally got iOS5 loaded on the iPad. Getting everything set back up has been a mild pain in the butt and I've already gotten a telling off from Apple because the backup hit up on the free 5gig limit with iCloud.
Turns out Bookman and GoodReader had already started trying to back up everything to the iCloud and that took up way too much space too quickly. Easy fix though, so that's nice.
I like the rounded sliders. 10/12/2011 7:46:06 PM |

Anyone figured out how to get it to consolidate iMessages and text messages from the same person into one convo? My girlfriend's phone does it but mine doesn't.
I currently have duplicate conversations for everyone that has iMessage, one convo for iMessage and one for texts, whereas hers just has them all in the same convo but blue if they're an iMessage and green if they're a text message. 10/12/2011 8:48:06 PM |

Backup - Depending on when you last did an update anywhere from 5 min - an hour
Downloading the file - Depending on your connection speed and how slammed the servers are (should be alright now) 15 min - 2 hours
Actual updating of the phone - about 5-10 minutes.
Restoring from backup - Depends on how many apps/pictures/etc you have backed up - anywhere from 5 min - an hour
Or you could be like me and update, jailbreak, install a non-supported tweak and end up dicking around with this shit for hours. But you're most likely not like me at all. 10/12/2011 9:38:25 PM |

finally done updating, but I lost all my apps... help!
Ok, I can add them back one by one using iCloud, but it will take forever and I lost all my data.
I havent updated my iPad yet and I really dont want to lose data on there, what can I do? I do not sync up my iPad with itunes on my PC so I can just copy it all there because when I select "Sync Apps" it says this will delete all apps and data on the iPad. Any help??

^^^ I had to wrangle with the restorer a bit on iTunes before the iPad was finished updating. It undid my folders but all the apps seemed to be safe.
It might have helped that I did a full up-to-date backup before starting, but I don't really know if that matters.
And forget the cloud for your iPad unless you're paying for the extra storage. 10/12/2011 11:42:05 PM |

is lion the only osx with cloud?
i know i can back it up on my iphone, but how can i sync to my laptop and see it? or is it all virtual?
the notification center is a neat idea, but pointless. you swipe down and it can show you all of these notifcations. i dont know about you, but i read my texts and emails as they come in. not sure what else to use it for.
and iMessage is neat. but you need to make sure the other party has ios5 as well. or else you'll be wondering what the point of imessage was. hehe
