I was 99.x% sure I had a job last week. FFS, they opened the position in HR at my request (state job), they'd asked me a year and some change ago to take the job I asked for this time, I've been commended repeatedly - all sorts of major reasons to give me the job. Unfortunately, the person who most wanted me to take the position wasn't on the hiring committee.

They gave it to someone else. Ostensibly, because of her college degree, and management experience. Well, they're paying her more money than they'd have had to pay me, and they can't be certain she'll fit as well with the job as I do, like it, or stay with it - known variables with me.

After all that, I keep being asked if I'm going to stay on as a PTer. Well, for now, of course, since I didn't get the job I was very much needing. My devotion to the job? Still commendable, but it's no longer a given that I will drop everything to come fix something or provide coverage. It used to be, and everyone in the dept knew this, that if I could come, I would. I worked when my mother was in the hospital. If that situation were to arise again, I'd now tell them 'sorry. find someone else'

And like a dumbass, I still fucking love the job, even on nights like tonight when I hate everyone here who isn't a coworker - i.e., the clients

This line made me think of say... waiting in line at the DMV for 30 minutes in line - only to walk up to the counter to hear a audible, long "sigh" from the person behind the counter right as I walk up after I "interrupt" a convo between employees.
