Another friend on Facebook posted he doesn’t care about trumps trials because he hadn’t yet been convicted. He hadn’t even heard of the conviction from last month. It’s wild. It’s not illegal to stay here without documents, it’s illegal to cross the border without documents— it’s a misdemeanor civil violation akin to speedin. People can stay until they have deportation orders and the vast majority of immigrants comply with deportation orders.

It’s illegal for someone to hire you knowing you’re undocumented but it’s not illegal for the undocumented person to work.

I get you’re just making a rhetorical point though but the framing of immigration issues in right wing terms of flagrant criminals flaunting the law isn’t helpful or accurate. Plus in the vast majority of the country not adjacent to the Mexico border, undocumented immigrants aren’t a problem and generally help the local economies and communities out. The rightwing messaging only works because it gives people a cover for their underlying xenophobia
