OK ladies, I need help with bra sizing!!! I have a small chest so I often don't need a bra, and I wear sports bras the other 90% of the time. I have exactly one normal bra in my wardrobe. Today I decided to start being a grown up and measured myself for a new bra. My underbust is about 36" (that's actual measurement before adding the 3-5 inches for band size) My bust is about 38-39. So according to the internet, my size is about a 40 NEGATIVE A??? At the very best I'm a 38 A.
After browsing a while, it turns out that most 38A's are post-mastectomy bras. There's also a lot of men who cross dress. That didn't do much for my morale that I share the same boobs with cancer patients and men.
My problem is a relatively large band size and small cup size ... apparently every woman on the Internet has the opposite problem - a petite frame and enormous boobs (boo freaking hoo! ) Any advice? Should I go get measured at a lingerie store? I don't think I've even seen a 38A in the store. HELPPPP MEEEE!!! ] 3/31/2011 3:24:47 PM |

go get measured
I could do it but you're not here
and I saw more large band small cup sizes than I thought while working in intimate apparel 3/31/2011 3:30:59 PM |

I've never had an issue with their measuring. Maybe it depends on the store. 3/31/2011 3:42:54 PM |

where do you guys recommend? I heard Nordstrom's is good, but we don't have one in Charleston. There's a lingerie store downtown but their stuff is $$$ (same as Nordstrom I guess) But I go to Raleigh pretty often so if you have recommendations there, then I'm game!! ] 3/31/2011 3:43:51 PM |

VS measured me at a 38DD
When I'm more like a 38DDDD - 40DDD
Raleigh - Bra Patch, Saks or Nordstrom, J Alanes (north hills)
Most department stores should be good at this, but those are the places I would send people if we (saks) didn't have their size in stock 3/31/2011 3:46:43 PM |

which dress?!?! i was SOOOOOOOOO close to buying this on ideeli today:
but after looking at the measurements (length mostly) of the size S and XS i realized since i'm short it wouldn't hit me right...it'd be way long (according to their lengths) and that would just be strange. but i am in love with it. i liked a bunch of their other stuff too...like:

A lot of places just don't stock As. Try Fredericks, TJ Maxx or if you have one, H&M. H&M is the only place where I can find a bra I don't have to wear on the smallest hook (32 a or b depending on store).
VS never has anything in stock in an A in my experience. 3/31/2011 6:01:51 PM |

I realllllly really want a pair of boots. But I have large calves that will not be getting any smaller (always been that way, 16 years of dance didn't help). Where can I look for some boots that will fit me but not break my wallet? 3/31/2011 6:43:25 PM |

Nerdchick - I wear sports bras 99.99% of the time (my friends joke that they know it's a special occasion when I wear a real bra), and I've found that these:
work really well with "grown up" clothes.
Victoria's Secret (above) has them with adjustable length straps (sized XS-L), but Wal-Mart has them for CHEAP but without adjustable straps (sized by width). there's also a bandeau version for strapless dresses and a racerback version as well. with an arsenal of these bras, there is nothing in my wardrobe that warrants a "grown up" bra. fuck those things. 3/31/2011 7:07:55 PM |
Meg All American 6759 Posts user info edit post |
nice. i might have to get a few of those this weekend since i also rarely ever wear a "real" bra. it's a rare occasion when i do! though now that i've discovered the awesomeness of the pushup (a little late to the game, i know) i wear them slightly more frequently.

@ piddlebug: cute dress! I loved that boutique, and it took some serious restraint (and reminding myself that my goal this year is to downsize my closet) to not buy a few dresses/skirts off there.
Also, when did the cap/gowns switch to red?!? This threw me for a loop:

^ i have to respectfully disagree
i think there is a definite difference. ive worn both versions (bigger band smaller cup) and the smaller band, larger cup size made a huge difference for me 3/31/2011 10:05:00 PM |
lewisje All American 9196 Posts user info edit post |
I said the cups were the same size
if the band is too big there's a problem where the front is pushed down, the back is pulled up, and the straps dig into the shoulders 3/31/2011 10:09:29 PM |

i wish i had been able to wear red when i graduated from state. on the other hand, black would be nice when i graduate from unc in may. i'm pretty disgusted to be wearing that god awful color. i still haven't bought the cap & gown yet because i can't believe i'm going to spend money on that. 3/31/2011 10:35:11 PM |

I don't think a 36 band would fit me, a problem I always have is that the cups are too close together. I'd think a small band would make that worse?? 3/31/2011 11:23:49 PM |
