hehe, so in my spare time while my students are working on their homework, I've been trying to prove a theorem I remembered hearing in topology: that a compact set is closed

I've worked on it, on and off, for about a month, and have been very frustrated at my inability to prove it...I suspected I was getting stupider and all the drugs/alcohol I have consumed are finally catching up with me

so today I finally broke down, gave up and looked up the theorem in my topology book

and IT ISN'T TRUE! it only holds for Hausdorff spaces
damn I am relieved

btw, the posting spellcheck seems to know the word "Hausdorff"....that's some thorough design

holy shit, we got a new scanner at work and i was talking to someone today about the price. i figured it cost around $4000

wrong. just looked it up. runs for as much as 20k, average price is around $13,000. a 13,000 dollar scanner. it is the coolest scanner ever though.
