^^I have issues remembering the password for Flickr as well. I log in occasionally, rarely ever post or upload photos on it, and do not use Yahoo for anything else either.

Honestly with the file size restriction removed, I am looking forward to streamlining my online photo presence. I can do all this stuff on my OneDrive and then the only place I will go for sharing photos will be Facebook.

despite UNC being on the list of accepted addresses, @live.unc.edu doesn't work

also, the wiki suggests that your files aren't actually private since they're through the school (and therefore the school can gain access to them, i guess?)

^Interesting, but not a total surprise. The MS link says it is only at universities that have opened it up to staff and faculty as well, which UNC currently has not. Students have access to live accounts, but staff will be in another 2-3 months, I believe.

I signed up for the paid account right now, or thought I did. But, I did not realize that the free trial did not include the 1TB of storage per user. Instead it has the basic 30GB or whatever. Boo.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G with hood and both caps for $100, but you have to pick it up at my house off Ebenezer Church tomorrow between 11-1:00. I've personally sold a copy on CL here local for $175 a few months ago, but unfortunately I've got a hard deadline on this one. Autofocus works fine, glass is perfect.

I made 95% of my photos of my kids with one of these for about two years. Through a turn of events wound up with another one. Just not using it much.

The amount of control you have over the image is leaps and bounds above anything else. If you just use a DSLR in automatic mode, you're basically wasting your money. It's actually a pretty lengthy/time consuming process to learn how to use one, but once you do, a basic point and shoot doesn't really come close.

Yep, and I got burnt out on it quick.

It was helpful when I was working for architects and designers because I could use multiple exposures to capture a space or building without the need for huge expensive lighting setups.

I think it gets overused by a lot of people, especially for landscape/nature photography.

When its done right, you shouldn't be able to look at it and tell its HDR.

the photo from Partland above is uncomfortable to look at because it is out of focus, my eyes keep trying to focus on it. it looks like autofocus chose the closest part to focus, on the edge of the photo, and not the waterfall in the center.

the other photo would benefit from some more dynamic range (or maybe just a decent polarizing filter) and then bringing up the shadows a tad and adding a graduated filter in post.

^ It is actually Portland, typo there.. I had a 1 second exposure there which is why the falls probably looks out of focus. Also, I'm thinking of upgrading from my T4i to a 6D. Does anyone here have an opinion on this?

honestly? the camera isn't the problem- it's your composition. Neither of those are particularly well-framed shots, so until you learn how to compose better photos, an upgraded camera is just a waste of money.

While you're at it, you might want to take a BW film class. I took several classes, many years ago, and while spending hours in the dark room isn't the same experience as using post-processing software, the basics you'll learn will really help you understand how to get the most out of your camera.

To extend to that, there are plenty of mirrorless cameras that are just as capable as DSLRs now. I played with the Sony A7r and the crop mirrorless and was hugely impressed, I may even make a switch from Nikon at some point.

true, but it just depends on how into photography you actually are. i shot and processed BW for years as a hobby and I really enjoyed the work that goes into it, so the same applies to have a DSLR kit with multiple lenses. if you want to have a small camera that you don't have to fiddle with and set up, a mirrorless is a great option, for sure.

It's out of focus everywhere except some of the dock and water towards the foreground, everythieverything else is soft.

Are you trying to shoot a landscape wide open? What was your aperture? What focus mode are you using (wide, auto, center spot)? What's your process for focusing? What's your lens length and shutter speed?

Haven't seen this at the top of the list in a while. I don't normally make it past the first couple of threads.

Noticed the HDR mention. I too found HDR shortly after getting a DSLR and cooked up a bunch of crap, realized it's not really called for and moved on and now feel embarrassed for real estate photographers who post gray artifacted skies on MLS.

I think it's a consequence of getting into photography in the filter-driven, slider to 11!!! world. It has a place, but as mentioned, the best ones are where you can't tell.

Recently got a Sigma 10-20 ($175 on CL, how could I not?). Haven't gotten to use it much yet. I shoot 95% photos of my kids inside. 3% B roll of places we go with them. 2% other.

Just ran out the back door for a few mins the other day. In just a few minutes I realized a couple of things also recently discussed. As people mentioned, it's hard as hell to get a landscape shot in focus on the fly. There's also a ton of exposure variability just walking a little bit.

Get to the point. I was bracketing because I wasn't sure about the lens. Cooked up my first HDR in a year and a half or so because none of the exposures were doing it for me.

I'll admit it was fun. This is super busy and it may be a little over the top, but I thought parts of it have merit. Luckily it's only a three minute walk so it's not like I can't try again.

So, I think I mentioned this before on here, but I'm looking at adding another lens and I'm considering this:

All I have still is the stock lens on my D5100. I would love a better wide-angle lens for some interior shots but for what I do, I'm happy enough with the wider angle of that adjustable lens (that's what most of my shots were up above) for now so I cannot justify shelling out the money to get a lens that would be noticeably different for those shots. I'm thinking I would benefit better from a bang-for-your-buck 35mm like that one I linked. Could come in handy for everyday shots as well as maybe provide better images for things like that last close-up picture above in my previous post.

Thoughts?

PS I'm still a huge n00b when it comes to gear. I've focused more on the composition and tend to simply mess with the settings until I get a shot that looks like what I had in my head and then provide any touch-ups in Photoshop (I'm about to do the CC lightroom and photoshop subscription though). I've obviously learned the basic relationship between the variables as I shoot almost entirely in manual (but with auto-focus more often than not) but am still very early on in connecting all the dots, especially since I'm only using one lens.

I really enjoy my 35mm 1.8G. Its a great first prime lens.

Thanks for your feedback. The more I read today, I think the 35mm 1.8 would be the right choice for a bargain lens. I think it'd be pretty versatile, especially for just normal hand-held shots around the house/family etc. and would give me some more versatility and better bokeh with some of my 'vignette' shots as well for a pretty good price.

Any filters that would be a big help for interior shots? I haven't really looked into filters at all. I know some people use them to adjust when shooting towards light sources like windows to avoid stuff being blown out. However if I am shooting toward a window, I usually fix that fairly simply by taking a shot where the rest of the space is underexposed but the window is more naturally exposed for every staged picture I'm taking. I then have that to use later to replace the window in my final shot where the room itself is exposed how I'd like. Pretty quick to take care of that in Photoshop that way.

Well, I finally rounded out my lens collection. Got the 10-22mm I've been wanting for so long. On top of that, I have a field job again in a week, so I'll be back to photographing critters on the regular.

I'm really bummed that the Flickr curator never got back to me after contacting me to feature me a year ago. I was so excited, but it just came at a point where I was switching jobs, and I've hardly had the opportunity to photograph things I used to over the past year. But fuck em. I've made some sales on Getty, now Flickr's stock photography thing picked me up too (along with tons of my shots), so it should be interesting how much passive income I can turn it into.

I still haven't tried out my new 100mm much, but here's a shot from the little bit I played with it.

Couple of questions for everybody on here. So I went to a couple of bluegrass shows last year and had a great time and got some good photos. I posted a very small amount of them online so far on FB and did share one or two with the bands/festivals Facebook page as well. Since then I thought nothing of it, until today when I was looking online and realized that one of my photos on Google has almost 10k views! I was like what the hell. So I did an image search and found out that one of the bands had posted my photo from IBMA on the front page of their website and a couple of times in news stories on their website. My photo is right in the middle of the page and shows the band performing in downtown Raleigh. I am pretty excited that they would like my photo enough to use it, but also a little bummed that they did not give me any credit. I am fine with them continuing to use it but should I message them to ask for a credit line? In this article:

the other photo that is posted is credited to the photographer. I am fine with that and don't really give a shit about posting photos with giant watermarks and crap on them. Second question, I went to the Outerbanks Bluegrass Festival in Manteo. I have only posted a tiny portion of my total photos so far but I did again tag the show in them. The night of the Boomgrass fireworks show when I went back to my hotel I posted a photo of the fireworks as well, which they immediately reposted and have since shared multiple times. In fact it is now the number two picture on their websites scrolling photo frame:

Again I did not get credit and would like to get a little credit byline. They have shared more of my shots on their Facebook page as well. More importantly though I want to see if I can make this a mutually beneficial arrangement. I don't want to get paid necessarily (well I do, but I don't expect them to be able to) but do you think if I gave them permission to use my photos (with a credit line) and gave them access to more photos that it would be a fair request to ask them for media credentials and for some complimentary tickets to the next show so that I could also photograph that? I had a good time and would like to go again. If I could get the tickets covered and a press pass I would still have to pay for my food/gas/lodging but it would take a chunk out of my costs and make it interesting for me with lots of additional locations from which to photograph. Anybody else had a similar experience and have a better idea? Thanks!

Screw credit. They are making a buck off you so what's the problem with trying to get them to do the right thing? It's the norm to just right click your way to engaging free content because people don't do anything about it.

Send them an invoice (payable in about 10 seconds) with a choice to pay or take it down.

Ultimately if you don't want something taken or care about credit or more importantly getting paid don't post it on the internet.

Also, I missed a $465 Nikon 80-200 two-ring on ebay because it closed during dinner and I couldn't get my wife on board with three kids up to their nonsense (being normal kids at dinner). How am I supposed to take cute picture of them now?

This is after I flipped an 85 1.8G and a 17-55 2.8G in the last two weeks to cover most of that amount out of profit. Double

Now I probably need to find something else to turn in anticipation of having to pay the going rate. I've only seen two under $500 in the last couple of weeks.

Anybody looking for a specific lens? I've had stupid luck lately. I charge well below market on my flips.
