The kid i completely unaware of what's going on, but when he has large emotional outbursts/experiences, whatever he is thinking of at the time comes true.
With the bird, he was very mad at white-daddy and mom for not paying attention to him - he was trying to talk about a bird.
With the 2nd polar bear, he was incredibly mad at his dad for throwing the comic into the fire and being an ass about Locke and being an ass in general - the last picture he saw was the bear.
Was there some catalyst for the 1st bear?

On a related note, did Walt have anything to do with the monster from the first two episodes? I don't recall seeing him "cause" it (by reading something like it in a book or anything), but I wasn't really paying attention.

Well, we saw him reading the comic book with the picture of the bear well after the crash when he was just sitting on the beach. Maybe it was when he was arguing with his dad about the dog?
