Bizarro game tonight. Canes' power play went 1 for 16, and alternated between horrendous passing and tons of turnovers and beautiful goals. Every Canes goal was a beauty tonight, including another Eric Staal PerfectShot, but FOUR odd-man chances given up WHILE WE'RE ON THE POWER PLAY!!?!?
If every man on that team didn't buy Gerber a drink tonight, I'll be miffed.

On top of that, the single PP goal was a roofed wrister from Brindy (league leader in PP goals) that wasn't much of a man-advantage type play at all. 12/26/2005 2:39:52 AM |

^^^^Eric Staal was even on the night. He was on the ice for two of Tampa's even strenght goals and two of the Hurricanes even strength goals. He doesn't get a plus for being on the ice when we score a power play goal. 12/27/2005 11:48:53 PM |

Canes made two trades today:
Colin Forbes to Washington/Manitoba for Stephen Peat.
Pavel Brendl to Phoenix for Krys Kolanos.
Peat is a fighter for Lowell. Kolanos has a lot of skill but has bounced around a lot, just like Brendl. However, we know Brendl doesn't want to work to stay here, so some new blood is an excellent thing. 12/29/2005 12:38:09 AM |

STANDINGS Carolina - 49 points, 1st place, Southeast Division, 3rd place, Eastern Conference Philadelphia - 51 points, 1st place, Atlantic Division, 2nd place, Eastern Conference
TEAM LEADERS Flyers - Gagne, 26 goals; Peter Forsberg, 39 assists and 51 points; Donald Brashear, 47 PIM. Hurricanes - Staal, 26 goals and 51 points; Cory Stillman, 27 assists; Mike Commodore, 76 PIM.
SPECIAL TEAMS Flyers - Power play: 18.3 percent (42 for 230), tied for 12th in NHL. Penalty killing: 79.2 percent (171 for 216), 28th. Hurricanes - Power play: 18.4 percent (44 for 239), tied for 9th. Penalty killing: 79.6 percent (164 for 206), 27th.
GOALTENDERS Flyers - Antero Niittymaki (12-4-3, 1 SO, 2.80 GAA); Jamie Storr (no appearances). Hurricanes - Gerber (17-7-2, 2, 2.79); Cam Ward (6-3-1, 4.02).

LAST MEETING Oct. 28; Hurricanes, 8-6. At Raleigh, N.C., Staal had his first career hat trick and former Flyer Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and two assists as Carolina set a single-game high for goals this season.
INJURIES Carolina - Vasicek (knee), Ladd (knee), Cole (hip) Philadelphia - Esche (groin), Primeau (concussion), Stevenson (hip), Pitkanen (sports hernia), Desjardins (shoulder)
Big game for the Canes tonight. If they win they will move back into 2nd in the conference, and will avoid a 3 game losing streak. A win would also guarantee at least a .500 record against the Flyers this season.

We just didn't have our legs the last 10 min of regulation tonight.
The highlight of the game in our section was one of the rink guys bringing a puck to one of the girls in the front row. It had a piece of tape on it that said "#29 REF, meet me at Sullivan's tonight if you're single." Then he kept eyeing her when he had a chance. No joke.
Nothing like keeping his eyes on the game.
She passed it around and we all had a good laugh at it, plus she seemed elated by the whole thing.

^ WTF are you talking about, Cam was standing on his head as the defense was crumbling around him. The third one was bad, but he stopped at least five ridiculous chances, and the Forsberg save (and the presence of mind to stayed sealed on the rebound) was fan-fucking-tastic. 12/30/2005 2:22:27 AM |
