^ I pretty much agree. Especially since Betemit was still only 25 and was signed for the near future for basically nothing. Baez is making 4 mil/yr by himself. I just hope that Betemit and Marte aren't making the Braves regret trading them in about 2 years.

making that trade makes me think that the braves seriously believe they can make the playoffs this year. i think they should have gotten 2 stud minor leaguers for betemit.

why else would they have traded one of their best prospects for a major league reliever and not gotten solid minor league players?

Recommendation: The Braves listened to the offer but declined. Still, the fact the Braves even paused to consider the deal may be a sign Jones could be moved this offseason for the right price."

Man, I don't know if I would've declined that trade... I love andruw jones, but our team with those three would've been better.

I would miss jones though

if we can get coco, lester, and another young pitcher, i'm for it

andruw will always be solid, but he'll never repeat last year

our farm system has no good young pitching prospects (devine?)

we have much more offense in the pipe

we better pull the trigger if we get the chance

Don't worry I'm sure we'll blow tonight's game.

What is truly sad is how shitty the Braves have been playing at home. Their "hot" streak to begin the 2nd half was basically all on the road and then they come home and go 1-5. LaRoche is part of that because he has hit 17 of his 22 HRs on the road (or something to that nature). I know Turner is not a hitter's park, but that is Coors Field type deviation.

Braves lose today to the lowly Pirates 3-2. Chacon made his first start for them and got out of some jams. LaRoche didn't play. 2 out of 3 ain't bad, but a sweep was needed. Atleast Hudson made it to 6 innings too.

well he's due 13.5m next year i think

and his agent is scott boras who wasn't happy when andruw signed with the braves for less than market value last time

i think it will be extremely difficult to hang on to him unless he dumps boras

Andruw won't be that valuable in a few years, his shoulder's been acting up the past two years and with no surgery to date, it should be in the near future. Besides, with the loaded farm system, and they do have great arms, the Braves will be back up next year.(not saying they won't win the wild card this year)

The NL East has some of the better young position talent in the majors.

Wright, Reyes, McCann, Utley, Howard, Francoeur (though he NEEDS to develop at least SOME plate discipline or he'll be the worst 30/100 guy in history)..

also, you look at Ryan Langerhans, who is as Cox says it, "a center fielder playing left field." Defensively, we really wouldn't miss Andruw Jones even though I love his non-chalaunt "this shit is so easy" attitude about a non-routine flyball that he inevitably makes look easy. And offensively, besides the power numbers, I'd rather have a hit for average center fielder. A guy who bats .310 with 25 homers instead of .266 with 54 homers.

I hope the Braves can keep Andruw, but I am not sure spending 14-18 mil/yr will be worth it (which is what I'm sure Boras will try to get assuming Andruw is productive in 2007). He is still relatively young, is still great in the field obviously, and is a pure power hitter which the Braves don't have otherwise.

Chipper is no longer a 30 HR guy and Frenchy may one day be a pure power hitter, but not yet and not with his horrible pitch selection. If it comes down to signing Andruw or a couple of solid pitchers, then I say go after the pitchers, but don't just let him walk and then pretend we will fill his shoes magically. He is the best CF in baseball and you can't just stick Langerhans there and expect reasonable production.

francoeur was also a centerfielder in the minors and brandon jones is gonna be ready for a corner spot in atlanta in 2-3 years

but i agree with abonorio

the power should be in the corners, the average should be in center

jones will walk after next season if he isn't traded before then

either way i'll miss his glove, but his bat can easily be replaced

The Braves aren't going to do a damn thing until they get sold from Time Warner. Is there any more word on Arthur Blank buying them? Last I heard he and a group of investors were thinking about taking them off of TWs hands.

I've changed my opinion quite considerably about Andruw. I think we should trade him. He's not going to be any more productive than he is right now (so he's on the downward slope). Cox has an uncanny talent to be able to trade players when he's maximized their usefulness. For the amount of money and talent we could get for Jones, I think we need to trade. And right now. We can't afford to keep hemmoraging games.

I really wish the they would just grow some balls and sign some bigtime free agents, they missed out on EVERY SINGLE ONE over the past 5 years. Unless you count Tim Hudson, which I don't.

Arthur Blank will not be buying the Braves. Liberty Media out of Colorado is the most likely candidate, but there is no new news on that front. Anything is better than Time Warner, but we really need to get away from the corporate ownership thing. Blank has said he would like to buy the team but Time Warner wants to do the deal with Liberty due to some tax advantages.

As for the Hudson thing, he was acquired in a trade, but JS did sign him to an extension, which is looking like a huge mistake now. Man how did Zito, Hudson, and Mulder all get old and shitty so fast?

Zito is fine. He has a 3.50 ERA in the AL. That comes down to ~3.00 in the NL, which is where he'll be playing next year in Queens. That is in the Top 3 for NL pitchers.

Oh, and to answer your question: Rick Peterson. He left after 2003. Following that season ALL 3 pitchers ERAs went up by over a full point.
