I had been trying to switch up until about November to a more neutral forefoot stride and developed terrible knee pain running down hills, so much that I had to stop and limp or walk
I took 2 months off and am trying to start again slowly, with more stretching and warm ups
my IT bands and hip flexors are tight and sometimes I have back pain
no knee pain since I started back, but just gonna take it slow
I was putting in some long training runs last year, and mostly would go out and run for an hour or more at a time
I have minimalist shoes, just haven't tried to get used to them as much as I need to
They seemed to bring out my weaknesses pretty quick when I tried them
I'll give it another shot in a few weeks.

I did 6:34 per mile so I missed breaking 1:26 by 9 seconds. My first 10k I averaged around 6:15 per mile so I wasn't terribly consistent. Really tried to dial it back at mile 7 into a more reasonable pace.2/6/2012 10:28:12 PM |

i dont remember pain, but there was some "soreness" or tightness while trying to get use to them. some calf tightness as well. but no real pain. but i did break in slow. i started around 1.5-2 miles but would go on and off with my other shoes. i think the most I ran in them has been ~5 miles or so.2/7/2012 7:32:41 PM |

Take it easy with minimalist shoes if you're not used to them. My calves and achilles definitely got super tight. I wasn't stretching them enough (and I think stretching too hard, even after a run is detrimental).
I love my Inov-8 155s though. My feet get sore but heavy shoes just weird me out now. 2/9/2012 12:46:32 PM |

I asked the doc for a couple options on what i could do for a slight case of EIA. He threw a script and a first-hits-free symbacort inhaler ($68/month). Thanks, but no. Ive read positive stuff about fish oil and Ill have an albuterol if it gets annoying. Bronkaid does the trick but its ephedra cant be good during a run; I put up some great times on it though. 2/13/2012 1:28:13 PM |

I ran the rugged maniac in Jacksonville last weekend. So much fun. Anyone doing the race in NC in a couple months? I am trying to talk a few people into doing it.
I do have a knee injury question. While running the race, I think I strained the outter side of my knee. I couldn't put any pressure on it or bend it on Saturday and Sunday. I iced it some on both days. Monday, I got a little more flexibility back and I foam rolled and iced more. I feel a lot better today, but still dont feel safe to run or workout on it. I am going to continue to ice and foam roll. Do any of you runners have experience with this type of injury? How should I treat it? Would a knee brace prevent this from happening again? 2/28/2012 3:54:51 PM |

Yesterday I had an "Easy Run", my training plan had it slated to do 4 miles. But I felt going out the door that this felt weird, one of those things I couldn't put my finger on. I just felt down and my pace really suffered from it. I had a lot of self-doubt. Do any of you have any tips to overcome this, I feel like this is mostly in my head? I'm kinda scared that the same thing will happen again to me on my run tomorrow. I love running but I didn't like having such a off day.
Anybody else use http://smartcoach.runnersworld.com/smartcoach/ for training plans? I've liked it so far, I feel like it's helped. It been nice to plan it and then see my past workouts on RunKeeper. 3/7/2012 2:32:38 PM |

Just go out another day and see how you feel. Some days just suck without rhyme or reason. (Except Caturday)
I hurt my knee Jan11 and was off running for about 6 weeks. Getting back on felt great then really weird. Ended up doing a couple sessions with a running coach and that helped a bit. Never used that app but it seems helpful - I'm doing some speed workouts but have zero direction. 3/7/2012 2:46:57 PM |

Vibrams question:
I'm wanting to get some, but it seems that the only one that they have my size in are the classic's. I'd prefer a different model. my foot is 10 inches, which translates to a 39/40. I thought about getting women's but I am confused as to whether or not the sizes are the same? Anyone have useful experience in this area? also, I am not planning on running a whole lot in these, I just figured this was the best place to ask. 3/13/2012 7:46:33 PM |

^ If you aren't totally set on having the "toe thing" going on, you should try New Balance minimalist shoes. It's the vibram sole, a larger toe bed, and a superlight shoe.
Been running in mine now for 6 months. Took a month to adjust and after it's amazing how good my feet/arches/calves feel. 3/14/2012 9:12:01 AM |

^^ where are you buying from? If it's a stocking issue, try looking into other dealers. We bought some online from REI and in store from Half Moon Outfitters (in Charleston, though).
just my two cents: give MeatStick's advice some serious consideration. I loved my VFFs, until I developed tendonitis that kept me from running for several weeks. I've since switched to a minimalist shoe, and it's working out much better. 3/14/2012 9:30:19 AM |

left gastrocnemius is still hurting and is super tight when I run...I have to stretch it every mile or so to get it to where I can run without it feeling like I've been shot in the leg.
anybody know what might be up or a solution? 3/15/2012 4:42:20 PM |

^ For awhile my right calf would feel stupid tight and my Achilles was sore to the touch. Try a lot of long soft stretches (start with an easy stretch then get deeper into it) after workouts. If you have a roller give that a shot. I'm going to try the stick whenever it gets here.
^^^ Check women's sizes at REI or one of the stores around here. Most shoe stores have at least a couple models of the Vibrams. Don't go too crazy in them, especially distance. They worked great for me (Bikila) but around 7+ they destroy my feet. Definitely like the Inov-8 155s if you like minimalist and do distance.
I had knee pain this week too. I have no idea why - never heel strike and keep my ITs as stretched as I can (minus the roller) - usually my Achilles or calves pay the price. 3/15/2012 8:35:31 PM |

Ugh, I started running again last summer, and told myself that I would keep up with it over the winter. Nope. Anyway, this year if it's been >45 degrees, I've gone out running. Lately, the weather has been nice and for the past few weeks I've been running anywhere from 10 - 20 miles a week, mostly sidewalk/road running, but some greenway, lots of hills. Ugh, I hate hills. 3/15/2012 8:45:34 PM |

perhaps. No, I'm not too fast. I suck at pacing myself, but I'm trying to get better. I'm at about 6-7 minute mile's now, but I'm pretty pooped after 3 miles.

Crabtree Trail is pretty flat. If you run from Crabtree to Big Boss, its ~6 miles and I think there's only one annoying hill (neighborhood) There's a lake on Lake Pine by 64 that's a pretty flat 2 mile circle. Shelly Lake isn't too bad except for the duck poop highway.
Get a Garmin of some flavor for pacing. I can barely tell a 9 minute pace from a 7:30 pace. It drives me nuts. 3/16/2012 10:48:42 AM |

Ran in the Shamrock Dolphin Challenge this weekend (8K on Saturday and 1/2Marathon on Sunday)
Ran a 35:37 in the 8k (7:10 pace) and a 1:45:09 (8:02 pace)... ended up in 43rd out of 618 people who did both.
Was disappointed I didn't get under 1:45 in the Half, was on a good pace early 38:49 at the 5 mile mark, but really struggled down the stretch... the last 3 miles were almost torture on my legs and I could feel the effects of the 8K the day before. The half really hurt me in terms of place, the folks who ran similar 8K times finished in the mid 30s. All and all happy with the result though, especially since this was my first Half and the first time I have ran over 5 miles this year. 3/19/2012 10:25:25 AM |

Anyone do any races this weekend?
My next few weekends are a bit hectic, I have a 5k this saturday, then next weekend a 10k, then a 5 miler, a 5 K, and then my 10 mile race.
Question: since I'm upping my mileage for my long run in anticipation for my 10 mile race (longest distance I've ever done) What should I do about my shorter distance races that fall onto my long run days? I'm especially worried about the weekend before my 10 miles, I signed up for a 5k (it's for ovarian cancer which is very personal cause for me and my family, my whole family is coming out for it so I can't not do it) Do you think it's practical to run it and then run the rest of my 8 mile long run later in the day or should I rerun it after the race like take my bib off and go back on the race route (twice?) or move my long run day to another day and then just start my taper? 3/26/2012 11:32:10 AM |
