I'm not really a big fan of spiced beers, but this one is always an exception:

It's kind of like drinking a christmas tree, but in a good way.

My first legal beer was a Rogue XS Imperial Stout...that was amazing, though a bit hearty

Right now nothing too exciting, Sam Adams winter until I can get back to the store to try some new ones.

GOD I LOVE THE CHARLESTON BEER EXCHANGE.

They always put a new beer on tap for growlers every Tuesday. They're constantly changing their beers on tap, but they usually try to get something really rare for Tuesdays (hence the name, Rare Beer Tuesday). So I get the email yesterday and it's this:

Quote :
"Please join us from 4:30 to 6pm tomorrow (Tuesday 11/16) as we host Claus Hagelman of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery for the debut of Randall 3.0. If you aren't familiar with this device, it is a unique piece of equipment that allows you to dispense draft beer through additional ingredients to impart special flavors in the beer. One can put almost anything into the Randall- from mild (like whole hops) to wild (the sky is the limit). We'll have not one but two Randalls running at CBX for limited growler sales and tastings:

The first option is Dogfish Head Chicory Stout "Randallized" through Charleston Coffee Roasters Whole Bean Espresso Dark French Roast Coffee!

The second requires you to read this disclaimer:

**Disclaimer: Before you accuse us of being out of line, please note that all Randall ingredients for this event were specifically requested by Dogfish Head.**

Okay, that out of the way, our second Randall option will be Dogfish Head Festina Peche through dried apricots and Sour Patch Kids. Yep, you read that right.
"

I had to work all day Tuesday, so I sent the girlfriend with two growlers, hoping she would get both. But she tasted the one with Sour Patch Kids (my absolute favorite candy), and said it was just the strangest tasting beer she'd ever had (she's actually a pretty good beer snob, so I trust her judgment).

Pretty excited about the chicory stout, which we will start and finish off tonight.

^^^^ I had Sam Adams Utopias at the GABF this year, granted it was only 1 oz. but it was goooooooood. Not sure I'd pay the $499 per bottle though.

Also the Infinium isn't on the shelves yet, though rumor has it -- it will be at month's end.

I love Weihenstephan, not a big fan of Boston Beer Co.

^^I thought the Utopias were going for $150, still really expensive but $499 is pretty insane. Also I think some of Sam Adams seasonals/special releases are pretty good (Imperial Pilsner, Long Shot, Latitude 48, Noble Pils, etc.), and while I'm not not a huge fan of their regular lineup it's still worlds better than macro lagers.

^^the last I saw when my brother was looking into getting a bottle of it for the two of us, it was 200 bucks... 499 seems reeeallly steep (haha well so does 200 to be honest)

^Bryan and Mark would both roll their eyes at that... I have nothing wrong with "steam" beers (usually can't even tell the difference), but they sure do

the only steam beer in Anchor's lineup is Anchor Steam itself. The rest are not.

I was pretty sure that they were all "steam" beers, as they don't use any cool factor (ice) in the brewing process (they were the company to trademark steam beers fwiw)

No, Jeep's right, the only steam beer is the Anchor Steam.

A "steam beer" or California common beer is where lager yeast is fermented at ale temperatures (because of the lack of refrigeration in the 19th century) and has a unique taste to it, hence why it has it's own style. Technically I think it's an amber lager if it were fermented at lager temperature. There other lagers are not fermented this way. They also brew ale's like the Christmas Ale which clearly aren't steam beers.

I've had some stuff from this brewery before and wasn't particularly impressed, but I'm a sucker for anything new so I bought it anyway.

back to the celebration ale -- last week's 6-pack didn't last long, on a new 12-pack now...

heading to san diego on monday (for the chargers game), planning on stopping by ballast point and hopefully grabbing some dorado (they've been closed on the past few sundays that i've been down there) -- if nothing else, i'll at least grab some sculpin

is really fucking good, easily my favorite of the 3 years I've tried. I've also got a bottle of Lucky Bastard (blend of Arrogant Bastard, Oaked Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard) that I'm saving for a post-Charleston Classic victory celebration

Do any of you guys happen to know if any local breweries are willing to bill up a corny keg? Finding one is harder than i thought after calling a few... thanks.

i don't have a direct answer, but it may not be a common thing due to sanitization and other issues that could be a concern. However, you may have better luck at a smaller brew pub or something like Natty Greene's over a full fledged brewery. But i'd guess no either way. Why not just buy a full keg from the brewery?

I had the Anchor Christmas Ale yesterday for the first time. I definitely enjoyed it. It was different, but good.

And I'm working on a Rogue Chocolate Stout now. Not great, but not bad, imo. There are better chocolate stouts and definitely better Rogue beers.

It's very expensive (10.99 a sixer at Total) but it's a good beer. Definite ginger taste in this year's batch as has been stated. This was the first year I've had it.

Saucer has 1.5 liter bottles of the 2009 and 2010 Anchor Christmas for $26... crazy.

^^their Double Chocolate Stout is much much better. It's quite amazing.

I've been drinking several seasonals this weekend. Bell's Christmas Ale and SN Celebration. Both good, but not stellar this season.

Terrapin Moo Hoo which is a Chocolate Milk Stout has been on the rotation pretty heavily as well. It's very good. There are several more but I can't remember what else i've had.
