You give the other team a chance to fuck up and put the pressure on the other team. For example you don't make that 4th down and the game is pretty much decided (you give clemson fantastic field position which they got anyway with the 4 YD PUNT). You try and stretch the game out and give the other team as much time as possible to fuck up (which Clemson was doing regularly). What TOB was banking on was a decent punt pinning Clemson somewhere inside their 20. They go 3 and out and we get the ball back at basically the same spot with a new set of downs and over 2 minutes to go (also graham gets a crack at a return to set up even better field position). Basically he was saying that at that point in the game he had more faith in the defenses ability to stop clemson and get the ball back with as good or better field position.

Thats asking for 4 plays in a row to go your way instead of 1 and it obviously didn't work because we are having this conversation so you can't say it was a better idea. If we got the ball back we still would've had to pick up 6 yards eventually so why not just pick it up on 4th down? Even if you go for and don't get it you only ended up losing 4 yards. Everyone knew our punter sucked. Watch other games around the country. Any elite coach goes for it right there.

Games aren't played in a vacuum where you can say oh this worked it was right or this didnt work it was wrong.

You go with the strategy that has the highest probability for winning. That's what game theory is.

For much of the game field position is very important, that much we all agree on.

At the END of the game field position is still important, but it takes a back seat to points when you are losing. You need POSSESSIONS not field position. You don't punt when you're down 2 scores in that situation. When you punt you are basically saying, okay we have to play a flawless game from this point on to pull off a miracle comeback. The probability of that is around 5%.

You have to make decisions that optimize your chance of winning, not optimize the chance of losing by less than 14.

he's done nothing to improve the defense. same problems we've had since he's been here: no pressure on the qb, coverage that's so shitty the only way the other team throws an incomplete pass is if the receiver drops it or the qb makes a shitty throw, and horrible tackling. even last year when we played our best defense under him, we got down 21-0 to ecu, lost a 17 point lead against vtech, and let torrey smith dominate us and again gave up a big lead against maryland. we have a losing season and debbie either fires him outright and gets her own coach or does tob's job for him and fires mike archer. otherwise we're in for the same shit week in and week out.

^^ I am glad to hear that. Losing to an inferior team is just plain unacceptable. TOB has at least one WTF loss a season (like ECU last year). Hopefully this was the only one we'll have, but I doubt it. We'll manage to lose to BC in a few weeks, yes the same BC that lost 30-3 to UCF this past weekend.

BBall it was Les (D), Herb (B-), Lowe (D+), Gottfried (?). Is Gottfried better than Herb? Maybe, I think he will be.

Football Sheridan (A), MOC was (C+), Chuck was B+ with PR, D without PR, TOB has been B. We got lucky with Sheridan. MOC was a good offensive coordinator who couldn't beat UNC. Chuck was exciting and brought in big talent at some positions and none at others with no discipline. TOB brings a ton of discipline with less talent. Bottom line, if he wins 7+ games a year and beats UNC yearly, he's as good as golden.
