The fact that it contacted a goaltender makes it seem like a specialized situation, but it would still be a penalty if Kaberle was on the receiving end of the high stick, and there's plenty of precedence for that." |
Not entirely, b... those are judgement calls at the nhl level. Follow through is also not penalizable as a high stick... within reason. USA hockey/hockey Canada you are always responsible, even in a follow through situation.6/11/2011 9:52:16 AM |

i recall a call in the 2006 playoffs where Justin Williams' stick hit a Montreal guy in the face but it wasn't called because the stick was lifted or was raised by someone else somehow 6/11/2011 9:58:33 AM |

^^just saying there's times its a discretionary call. There's a gray area on follow through and stick lifts. USA hockey is obviously black and white, despite officials forgetting that and using the nhl standard. 6/11/2011 10:33:11 PM |

^^ I know you're talking about total series numbers, but I think the ratings have been pretty good. It was going to be hard to beat a Chicago/Philadelphia series. It's still doing pretty well considering there's a Canadian team involved. Lest we forget the shitfest that was the '07 Final.
Quote : | "Game 5 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final drew a 3.2/6 overnight rating. While this was down 20% from the 4.0/7 Game 5 drew in 2010 for Philadelphia/Chicago, the number is still quite respectable for Boston/Vancouver, considering it was up 19% from 2009's Pittsburgh/Detroit series, and was up 25% from the last Stanley Cup Final Game 5 to feature a Canadian team, which was Anaheim’s clinching victory over Ottawa.
The local markets were once again led by Boston, which hit a series high 25.8/44. Providence followed, as has been typical throughout the series, with a 16.0/26. Buffalo (7.9/14), Detroit (4.6/8), and Pittsburgh (4.2/7) rounded out the top five. Expecting all the metered markets to come in later. Overall, not a bad Game 5 draw for NBC.
Stanley Cup Final Game 5 overnights since 2007 2011, Boston-Vancouver: 3.2/6 2010, Philadelphia-Chicago: 4.0/7 2009, Pittsburgh-Detroit: 2.6/5 2008, Pittsburgh-Detroit: 2.9/5 2007, Ottawa-Anaheim: 2.4/4" |
I think hockey is finally gaining some traction with casual sports fans. With the new tv deal and basketball and football likely locking out their players next year, I think there is huge potential for the NHL to gain both new fans and higher ratings.

^^ I would agree if they had not just locked themselves into a ten year tv contract with NBC and versus.
I used to watch all the time when espn owned the rights. versus is typically part of higher level cable/dish tiers which limits availability of midseason games. Plus espn doesn't cover it as much because it's not on their network.

Conversation between Sedin and Referee kelly sutherland.
*Sedin gets punched in the face 4 times without retaliating, Referee gets into the fray and pulls Marchand away from Sedin*
“Are you going to call a penalty?” “I will” “When? After the 5th punch?”
*Sedin gets 2 minutes misconduct*
Terrible. 6/14/2011 3:50:47 PM |

I'm also going to point out the Marchand got 2 for roughing and a misconduct on that play, too. Se in did not get the only misconduct.
