can anyone explain why my iphone would shut off randomly and not turn back on without being plugged into iTunes? it happened to me last thursday, and I thought it was a random occurance, but a couple people in my office said it's happened to them in the past few days too, included one today.

I'm tempted to get a replacement phone for $150 because my home button flakes out sometimes but I'd lose my unlockable baseband. Think I can stick it out until the iPhone 5 and sell this one and make a little profit.

Unless you plan on unlocking it yourself and using it internationally, I don't see why you would care. It's worth $10, maaaaybe $20 in resale value and that's if (and it's a fairly large if) you can find a buyer that gives a shit. Most people don't. It's one thing to keep your baseband if it means a couple of minutes of work upgrading it in a non-standard way, but if keeping it is the difference between having a functional phone or not, I don't see why you'd let that be your deciding factor.

Incorrect.

1. Yes it's unlocked and I've used it 3 times since I got it traveling internationally. If I got a replacement I'd lose the ability to unlock and swap out the SIM when I travel.

2. The baseband is worth $$$. Selling an unlocked iPhone versus a locked iPhone is a BIGGGGGG difference. I tried selling a locked AT&T iPhone on Craigslist and could barely get $250 for it. My personal phone (unlocked) would have gotten $400+. In fact everyone was emailing me asking if it was unlocked and how great a deal it was if it was.

My point being if I sold an unlocked iPhone 4 I'd get a lot more than a newer locked one.

nahh it got knocked out of my hand by a contractor and fell 16 ft to a concrete floor and broke the original glass. And then i ordered some replacement crap from china and did it myself. which means the vibrator is probably just a cable came lose but the $30 replacement glass is not nearly as strong as the original because the cat knocked it off the counter on to the carpet inside the case and that one broke.

so now i'm just like "fuck it i'll wait till the next one comes out"

My 3g lasted 2.5 years just fine... actually still works as my running ipod

has anyone gotten an error message that says "Apple ID has been disabled" or some shit?

my GFs phone said that about half a day into her first iphone and setting up an apple ID. she got a 4 about a month ago, and nobody at the apple store or on their own damn help center know what it means or how to fix it. they all just say "change your password" which she has done multiple times and it doesn't fix anything.

so for now she's downloading shit through my AppleID.. which is ok i guess?

Idk about the original problem, but my husband uses (& always has) my apple ID on his iPhone so we don't pay for stuff twice. Works just fine.

Yeah my vibrator switch is fucked up. Like it's loose or something and keeps making the phone vibrate at random. It also won't go into vibrate mode sometimes...which is great when I get a text while in a work meeting

And my phone is so fucking slow now, doing anything. Even texting, what the fuck.

BTW phone is 3 1/2 years old.

Just wanted to share another iPhone success story...

Yesterday my 1 yr. old got a hold of my wife's iPhone4 and proceeded to walk over to the dog's water bowl and had a blast dunking it and swishing it around before she could get over to him and take it away. So, it was submerged and agitated in water.

She wiped it down, shook it out and it worked fine, except the phone thought it had headphones plugged in when it did not, which means no speaker, no ringer, etc. So, I put it in a bowl of rice overnight and this morning, voila!, it's good to go again. awesome.

The home button on my 4 has started to crap out. I've already had one trade out, do you think apple will do another? I'm planning to upgrade when the next one is released.

It's amazing how problematic that home button is, especially starting with the i4. It shouldn't be that complicated, it's a button...

I dropped my 3GS in the toilet once, and everything worked fine afterwards, except the home button.

Supposedly the iPhone 5's home button has been leaked and it's different than the one we have now (much larger tabs). Maybe that's why.

Anyone get the blue screen of death on their iPhone? I have an iPhone 4, got it in... Novemberish of 2011

Last couple of days it has been locking up a little but nothing too crazy. Last night it froze while I was using the gps (leading me to being lost & late) today it has been locking up worse then shutting itself down and now...the blue screen of death

I made an appt with the genius bar in hopes of getting this worked out. The biggest annoyance is that this is my phone... And I kind of need it. I work from home & this is my only phone & I have teleconferences!! Ahhh google talk to the rescue but that doesn't help me with my current calls, texts & voicemails!

Any ideas? How bad is this? Am I going to have to get a new phone & resync everything?! Noooooo

They will take one look at your phone and at the first sign of even anything remotely wrong that a reboot won't fix they will grab a new one and give it to you. If it still works at all, make sure you do a backup, because you will be restoring to a new phone very soon.

I went through 3 iPhone 3GS' in a year. Not one was ever dropped, abused or mishandled.

And fucking Apple tried to tell me they weren't going to replace it the last time because their OS update bricked my phone and I didn't have AppleCare.

Great devices, not all that reliable.

When I showed up the screen was still blue (going on 2-3 hours). The dude took one look & took it to the back. He got it to stop blue screening & we reset & restore it. iCloud wasn't really worth a shit because of the way my contacts were saved (I think). I'm missing most of my contacts but so far have been able to tell who is calling or texting...so far

I have all my contacts in gmail but they're not all showing up in my phone despite the settings leading me to believe they should be in there...

supposedly it can fix unresponsive home buttons.

This might be bs too, but I find removing apps I never use from notification center helps keep things snappy.

in a race to see what can dl the latest iOS 5.1.1, my Verizon iPhone 4S beats my newer MBP by at least 9 minutes, and I started DL'ing on the iPhone two minutes later.

but, i'm also running Time Machine and posting to TWW on my MBP...so I'll give it some slack

When you update directly on the phone, all you're downloading is the ~50 MB delta update. When you update from a computer it has to download the entire ~800MB ipsw.

^^^, ^^^^... it seems like hokum to me, but I didn't see how it could hurt anything so I gave it a try. My home button is working fantastically now, whereas before it was really flaky (sometimes i'd press it once and it would act as if i'd pressed it twice, sometimes i'd press and press and press with no response.) Now it's working like a champ. Perhaps it's just coincidence, but if you're having trouble with your's i'd recommend it, it seems to have worked wonders for me.

Brand new iPhone user. Bought through Verizon. What type of insurance do most of you typically do? I can't decide if I should use AppleCare or the Verizon insurance. My wife also got one, and I'm more worried about her damaging or losing her phone, and do not want to pay several hundred dollars for a new one.

Think it's only $150 for a replacement. I actually recently cracked my screen. I'm debating getting a replacement for $150 but I'd lose my jailbreak which I don't want to do. Might just wait on 5.

Verizon added insurance to my iphone and we didn't catch it for a few months. Before I called to cancel, I dropped my phone and shattered the screen. Deductible for a "new" phone was $165 iirc and that's AFTER paying the $8-10/month. I called Apple to find out what screen replacement cost and they charged the exact same $165 for a replacement. So fuck Asurion/Verizon insurance. The only benefit was that I got a 1 year warranty on the phone which I used since they sent me a POS where the home button quit working after a month.

apparently CITI (citi forward) will pay for iphone warranty if you start using your citi card for ATT payment. I just noticed this yesterday after i saw the statement when I bought an ipad.

kinda neat i guess. i may give it a try.

I forgot to add earlier. If you're looking for insurance (you're concerned with losing it or it being stolen) squaretrade is probably the best deal. Actually, they're possibly the best deal even in case of breakage. You do have a deductible but it's less than Asurion/Verizon & you can usually buy the policy for less than 6 months of Asurion payments (especially if you buy it on sale). If I ever get any kind of insurance/warranty again, that's what it'll be.
