Get a set of real sights and never look back on that UTG stuff

Is there a particular set of sights that you recommend?

I did build mine from parts, but a month ago I didn't have the first clue about AR15's so I'm still learning what's good and what's not.

Shit I can look at that pic and see the front is too high.
I'm actually surprised you hit paper at all.

I have mag pul flip ups on mine and their aim point hasn't changed on me in 1000 rnds. (I know that's really not that much I'm just sharing my experience as transparent as possible)

I don't think they are the best or anything they just work for me. On a 6" plate at 100 yards I'm yet to miss with them once I got them sighted in.

i love plain old GI iron sights. a quality front sight base drilled and pinned to the barrel beats any flip up imo.

There's nothing wrong with flip-up sights but to get a quality product you have to spend quality money; Daniel Defense, YHM, Larue etc.

I'm not real familiar with UTG sights, but you need a front sight adjustment tool to raise or lower your front sight post. You can also use the tip of a 5.56 round or a thin screwdriver blade.

I have mag plus on all 4 of my ARs. They spend most of their life folded though, as each rifle wears a red dot.
They are the cheapest 'reliable' folding sights.

Yeah I also don't beat my gun around or leave them up when not shooting. I'm sure they can move... Mine just haven't yet.

Most of these guys use their guns more aggressively than I use mine.

I beat the shit out of my ARs. Still haven't had a problem with the magpuls.

I've actually adjusted the front post down as far as it will go, but the point of impact barely changed at all.

I can get a set of MBUIS for ~85 from Amazon. I might just do that.

You are better off just looking down the rails like a shotgun than buying UTG.

the good thing about those UTG sights you chose is they leave room to put on a sweet NCStar scope!

Haha, UTG cant even make a siderail for an AK.

That alone means they can eat a dick.

I've got a UTG rear sight on my AR and its been nothing but spectacular. It works, holds zero and was cheap.

That being said, as soon as I have the money I'm upgrading to Troy sights.

What are you using for the front sight?

Oh, I also tried an A2 carry handle rear sight and the result was the same.

I looked at the Troy sights but they are $100 more than the Magpuls. Are they really worth the extra cost?

cant really beat the magpuls for the price for an inexpensive set of sights.

YHM, troy, etc make some great iron sights.

fixed sights will be a bit cheaper than flip up. so if you dont want the flip option, you can probably find them a bit cheaper.

check armslist, craigslist and such for deals. but be careful, apparently there are fakes out there. magpul has its PTS series, so dont buy that (its for airsoft).

I have a UTG rear sight on my .22 AR, magpul rear sight on my 556 AR. also have a set of YHM sights that came on a upper i trades with a guy, he had them as "cheap iron sights". so either they're knock-offs, or maybe he gave me the wrong set..? lol. (i cant seem to find YHM knockoffs)

Looks like the rail is out of spec, or the barrel is, one of the two.
The tube is more likely. It is not parallel/ concentric to the barrel

it's not the tube. the rail on top of the tube is still on the same plane with the rail on the upper. it's the sight.

the sight is probably meant to go on top of a railed gas block, which would be lower than mounting it on the top rail of the tube.

I have never seen a rail that close to the barrel at the bottom.
Compare the chamber to the muzzle compared to the rail, it isn't the same.

maybe the tube isn't on square or something, but it looks like the rails are in line to me. i'd put a straightedge along the top rails to check.

Looks level to me. The bottom of the rail looks too high because it's squared off at the bottom instead of round:

Yeah, it feels great to hold.

So I looked up the sight on the UTG site and look what I found:

Quote :
" Profile Designed for Installation on Gas Block"

And that would be why it's way too high. I'm trying to find the box to see if it said that on there and I just missed it or it didn't say anything about it, but I may have thrown it out. I've never even seen a railed gas block, I didn't know that was a thing...

Not sure if this is your review, but it sounds like a similar story

via amazon:

Quote :
"Just went to the range this past weekend to try out this front sight and found out that this sight was not meant to be attached to a hand guard or a high profile picatinny rail. At 50 yards and with the front sight post screwed all the way down my bullet impact was 3 feet low. I might have been able to sight this in at 300 yards but didn't have that luxury at this range I was at. This sight post is really tall and I believe should be mounted on a low profile picatinny barrel or gas block mount and not on the hand guard. "

Ha, that's not me. It sounds like that should be plainly visible on the box or something. Sucks for me, I've wasted two range days and about 100 rounds of ammo on that stupid sight.

2 range days is 100 rnds ? Damn I wish I had your patience.

2 range days for me is the 1000 rnds I've posted about and that's just one put of the 5 guns I brought.

Course it's a 3 hour drive for me to get to my range so I spend some time there when I get there

If you got it from amazon just send it back as defected. They'll refund you everything. That's if it doesn't say anywhere that it's for a lower mounting position on gas rail. But amazon is pretty good about returns. Or just swap for a same plane sight

I got them at the gun show from some random asian people.

I only spent 100 rounds because the sight was so far off, it wasn't worth shooting any more than that. I don't have that much ammo right now and I don't want to waste it not being able to hit anything.

I've been going to Range37 while the Wake county range is closed for annual cleaning. Is anyone a member there? The perks of being a member seem pretty nice but it's a 45 minute drive from my house and about 1:15 from work, so I don't know if I could make it worth it.

My AR has had 2 bouts of failing function check

1st time, it away after doing a bunch of function checks (the hold-trigger, thumb the hammer down, let trigger go, and squeeze trigger) to try to figure it out/loosen it up. At first the hammer didn't do anything; it eventually started snapping to a 2nd position when the trigger is let go (normal).

The 2nd time happened first thing at the range (after having cleaned it; FCG possibly over-CLP'ed but dripping with it or anything). I did the function check steps again maybe 10 times then it was fine.

any ideas what could be wrong?

PSA, if that matters

^^^ sounds to me like it is beyond repair... i'll come by and pick it up to be disposed of and i won't even charge you for my services

but yes, i would say it is in the FCG. Most likely the disconnector. Often times less expensive LPK will have some parts with contact points which have the mag/phos coating causing it to drag.

if you pull the trigger forward will it reset?

no, it's all factory mil-spec

i haven't looked into inspecting the parts myself, yet. I suppose I can take it back to the gun shop (bought it new) and they'd inspect it.

I don't think so. If he didn't build the gun and just bought a complete rifle advertised as mil-spec, then it's likely he's not familiar with which parts have different specs.

If you bought the rifle complete, there's no reason not to take it back to the place you bought it and see what they'll do for you.

Are you in the Raleigh area?

I'm shopping for a sub-compact 40 S&W for concealed carry. Thinking about S&W Shield, Walther PPS, and Kahr PM40. I have only fondled them in shops. Anybody here owned or fired one of these in 40?
