I love linux as a pc OS because i can mess with a lot and sure... i mess up some stuff every now and then... ohh shit my new driver doesn't work with my sound card... ...
But seriously android is awesome in that same way... but i'm not willing to take the risk of fucked up drivers or glitchy software on my phone. 6/15/2012 10:30:09 AM |

My argument wasn't that people are using a lot of different versions of Android, just that it isn't hell.
If you have a high end device, odds are you're going to have the latest version of Android at a reasonable time after release till your phone becomes obsolete. Can it run a newer version of Android past the extent of manufacturer support? Sure. Should it? Probably not. ICS is much different than Gingerbread. It's more hardware intensive. 6/15/2012 11:30:58 PM |

That's your opinion. Obviously not everyone shares it. Actually, if I had to guess I'd say the number of people that do share it is roughly 7%.

That's not even an opinion. That's just straight up, 100%, factually based, incorrect. I get that you like Android, but you're not even living on the same planet as the rest of us if you can make a statement like that with a straight face.6/16/2012 1:03:08 AM |

Just look at the fragmentation.
You have 7% of Android users on ICS. Why? ~10% of current Android phones in realistically should run ICS, and it takes time for a manufacturer to create their modification of Android. It has to be stable for a completely different hardware, and an improvement on previous user experience. It has to do that, as well as pass whatever ridiculous testing the carrier wants to do on it to make sure the update doesn't make the phone break what their idea of the experience should be (as well as doesn't break their network).
65% of Android users use Gingerbread. For most phones released before ICS, this is the most advanced software their phone should realistically use. Gingerbread allows you access to pretty much every app ever. That's why it's not fragmentation hell. As long as you weren't stupid enough to be on a phone that hasn't gotten to Gingerbread yet (or even Froyo for that matter, which also can pretty much use every app ever, accounting for 21%) you don't really miss out on anything your phone can handle.
That leaves like 6% of the android user base being retarded and using a pre-froyo device. They might be going though hell, but they're also retarded for keeping around a super old device that sucks.
If you took a step back and realized how much time and effort it takes to get software developed for a specific phone at the quality a phone manufacturer has to release it, you'd see why either you have the update at a reasonable time, or your phone is obsolete. 6/16/2012 2:48:29 AM |

99% of android apps can run on Froyo, GB, ICS, etc
its not really a big deal, its more aesthetics and bells and whistles
and as far as the 99% of apps comment, I don't have any stats to support this, just my own experience...the only apps I know of that don't run on all 3 of those OS's are Chrome which isn't available on older OS's (though there are tons of browser alternatives and the only real plus of Chrome is being able to pull up webpages open in Chrome on other devices) and HBO Go which is the opposite, and isn't available on newer OS's for some reason

Just an sbsettings theme. That and lockinfo are the main reasons I jailbreak. Also five icon dock and 5 column springboard.
-Also if you haven't jailbroken your iPhone yet you're crazy. It's so easy now and things like lockinfo and sbsettings are things that just should be integrated into iOS and it's crazy they haven't been yet.
Also there's now ncsettings:
Which adds the settings toggles straight to the iOS notification center.
http://www.redmondpie.com/ncsettings-for-iphone-brings-an-array-of-frequently-used-settings-to-ios-5-notification-center/
I mean seriously. Apple makes you go into settings->general->bluetooth->switch to turn on/off bluetooth. It hasn't changed iOS's release. Horrible.

I never could figure out how that was any different from sbsettings except for with smaller icons with no labels or the ability to prioritize your toggles. Basically inferior in every way.6/26/2012 12:51:47 PM |

Decent article about fragmentation and how Apple is using the artificial removal of features to create segmentation between different iPhone models. My favorite part:
Quote : | "Android fragmentation is a serious problem for developers, since they face a massively fragmented user base, though it is rather less of a problem for Google, since a forked fragmented screwed-up Android phone still has a web browser and a data package and so is still generating Adsense eyeballs.
Indeed, a helpful way to think about this is that Apple makes money from great apps by selling the hardware to run them, while Google loses money from great apps, since they lead to less web search. " |

I think you're missing the point. If you ONLY want to use the iOS notification center then ncsettings adds it to that so you don't have 2 separate windows (notification center + sbsettings).6/26/2012 4:22:54 PM |

Sorry, I should have said "I never could figure out how that was any different from the sbsettings NC widget except for with smaller icons with no labels or the ability to prioritize your toggles. Basically inferior in every way."
I forgot the old thing that was sbsettings even existed any more because once iOS 5 came out I stopped using it, so now when I think of sbsettings, I just think of the Notification Center widget. I agree having both is dumb, which is why I don't even have a way to activate sbsettings via Activator. 6/26/2012 5:36:40 PM |

I still have them separate. I tried them together and it took me longer on average to make adjustments. I rarely find myself needing to use a feature of the notification center AND sbsettings at the same time so I'd rather keep them separate for convenience. Lumping them together just seems to clutter things. 6/27/2012 11:23:12 AM |

say what you will but the difference between the 4s and 3gs doesn't mean much in terms of user experience..the camera is still not the best and the screen is still the same size..if the battery life was 2-4x better and the screen was an inch or two bigger that would make it a much better phone

You, sir, are clearly out of your God damned mind.
The bump in screen resolution alone is worth the cost of an upgrade. As is the bump in processing power. Neither of them might not be super noticeable when upgrading, but just try going back for a week and then see how you feel about it. I agree that the camera isn't the best, Any digital camera over $300 is going to be better, but, oh wait, when you're comparing it to cell phones, it actually is one of the best available. Of course everyone would like better battery life, but in most real world comparisons, it's better than most, and not everyone actually wants a bigger screen. I see people with those giant Android phones and wonder how they even reach the middle of the screen when holding it with one hand. I'd like to see the same sized phone with a screen that runs all the way to the edge, but I (and from studies I've read most other iPhone owners) am perfectly content with the size of my screen.

there was a Groupon that knocked it down to $150. It is reallllly good. Completely surprised at the sound quality and the solar part worked right away, didnt have to let it charge up at all, was charging the boombox, my phone and playing instantly.
Really well designed too, like the dock swivel to make it easy to remove the phone, there is a protective cover for the phone that you can still see through when you have it in place, theres even a dock for the remote underneath the solar panel. Pretty well thought out IMO 7/19/2012 3:28:34 PM |
