Awesome, thanks guys. But if I'm focusing on a point where the person isn't (yet), what am I focusing on exactly and how will I know that's a good focus for when they do get there?

Just got my stuff in to go to a two camera system D610 + 24-120 f/4 to go with my RX1. I find it's easier to switch cameras than lenses with kids around.
Selling a D7100 with 8,900 shots, Sigma 10-20 variable, Sigma 17-50 2.8, and Tokina 50-135 2.8. Posting on CL and fredmiranda, but won't be at home during the day without kids to drag everything out and make photos for a few days. Everything is 10/10 and I generally sell cheaper than anybody else to move things quickly. 9/10/2016 10:14:34 PM |

girlfriend wants to buy herself a camera. She seems to be eyeing the Cannon T5i. Can anyone offer any pros/cons/ other considerations?
She's got a good eye for photos, takes a lot of great phone camera shots and really enjoys the editing process as well. Wants something she can learn to use fairly quickly but also something she won't outgrow. 10/11/2016 11:29:43 AM |

I have one. It's a great starter camera. If she wants to get better, a photography class at a community college and youtube tutorials are great. 10/11/2016 11:39:20 AM |

She's looking at those package deals, the ones with the lenses and gear. Any of that stuff she should stay away from?
What about wifi capability on the T6? Worth the additional cost? 10/11/2016 12:07:10 PM |

Quality lenses matter more than which body you buy. I $100 lens on a $900 body is worse than a $500 lens on a $500 body. 10/11/2016 12:17:13 PM |

I got one of those packages on Amazon for like $800 a few years ago, but I had shot in BW for years, and taken several classes. It came with a telephoto lens, but the rest was mostly just cheap crap. I don't think WiFi is all that necessary since I just put my memory card directly into my MacBook, but if she wants to pay the extra $100 or whatever it is, I guess it's up to her.
Like the poster above me said, upgrading the body isn't all that big of a deal. Canon lenses are legit. It's better to start small and work your way up anyway imo. Renting lenses is also pretty easy/cheap. 10/11/2016 12:24:06 PM |

I wound up selling everything pretty quick. Even managed $500 for the D7100 on CL local same day as posting. That was a miracle.
Since picked up a D7000 + 18-105 + 70-300VR + 35 + Sigma 8-16 + SB-700 for $nothing (1,000 shots across all that gear, boxes, receipts and all). Profits covered my D610 body less the $100 I sort of lost by dropping my Yongnuo flash and having to keep the SB-700, which I like well enough, but have been eyeing one of the built-in receiver Flashpoints on sale though.
Haven't found a kit to buy in a month or so. Prices have kind of bottomed out and there's a glut of new buying going on. Give it 6 months of the new Nikon 70-200 being out and the Christmas stuff to sit and hit the internet and there will be great deals again.
I picked up a Rokinon 14mm. It's really a nice lens. Super budget option for FX. Just as sharp as anything I've seen and the chipped version has been on sale sub $300 several times recently.
Loving the D610. I was a little worried about the AF, but no complaints in pretty much dark or keeping up with full on sprinting kids. I already knew the sensor was awesome from the RX1. 12/5/2016 9:12:07 PM |

Finally got me a 50mm prime f/1.8 lens for my Sony! Now I can bust out some rack focus and my bokeh now has some smooth mouth-feel, ya dig?
I refuse to apologize for the size of these pics. Get you some bandwidth! #SorryNotSorry

#2 is definitely out of focus. The focal plane extends from slightly behind the shirt collar on the far side and encompasses the right shirt pocket. There is also motion blur from bottom left to top right (mostly apparent in the grass behind the subject which is close to the focal plane). Looks like out of focus + camera shake to me.
No sense in blaming it on the subject. We don't all take perfect pictures every time. 2/14/2017 11:21:14 AM |

well, I guess my attempt to keep this lighthearted has failed. I guess it's now a critique.

Saw this woodpecker pecking away at the utility pole outside my kitchen window. He didn't mind me observing him but as soon as I got my camera out he made a dash! Luckily I was able to get him in the last millisecond

Is anyone here working with 360° photography? I've been using a 360Fly to stitch my own google streetview onto mmm files, and I'd be interested in other camera options anyone likes. 12/9/2017 7:48:56 AM |

Hey guys, figured this was the best thread for this question, but if there's a better one let me know
I'm looking at doing a bunch of my metal prints for my black and whites from Bay Photo. It seems like metal prints fade from direct sunlight more than other types.
Several of these are going to be going onto a west facing wall that gets maybe an hour of direct sunset light a day, often filtered through branches etc in the spring/summer. I'm doing a lot of pictures so trying to keep costs down, but should I be paying for their upgrade to EXT metal which is supposed to protect against sunlight a bit for an extra 15-30 bucks per print, or is this amount of sunset light not really enough that it's going to fade the pictures?
metal prints and description of that special metal here for reference
https://bayphoto.com/wall-displays/metalprints/single-metalprints/
Thanks

I haven't done metal prints, so let me know how it goes.
We have some long term construction going on at work now right above my office. As soon as that is done though I think I'm going to start seriously printing some of my own photos and cover the walls of my office and my house. I am curious what others have printed and hung? Standard framed prints? Canvas wraps? Etc. I've got a couple of photos that I had done at ProDPI and then my grandfather matted and framed them for me. They look really good but I'd rather not bother him with this as he's 90 years old!
Also you might want to post this to r/photography. May have better luck and response there.

I chatted with their support yesterday and the person basically said an hour of sunset light a day is fairly insignificant and not necessary to upgrade the metal, which is mostly geared towards people putting a print outside...so I went with just regular metal for all of them. I won't be able to comment on fading for years I don't think, but I'll certainly report back on how they come up, should be shipping tomorrow
In the meantime, I do have 4 shots I printed out on acrylic from Nevada Art Printers and I LOVE them. I went with metal for this next group because it's supposed to be similar to acrylic with a lower price point. Also was cheaper than going with framed shots from MPix who I've used before.
When I get the metal next week I can upload a comparison of the 3 kinds...won't be the same exact photos obviously, but all are black and white and might give a decent visual 7/30/2019 3:05:26 PM |

I can't see it being the metal itself, or necessarily the base coating applied prior to the ink or dye/sub transfer to the sheet, but the important thing is the top coating being good uv resistance.
And old windows will cause more fading than new windows, regardless of metal, canvas, ink and paper, or traditional photo prints. We've been offering metal prints for probably 8 years now and haven't had any fade, either customer or studio samples. 7/30/2019 5:13:56 PM |
