Have any of you had success getting AT&T to unlock your iPhone (out of contract/staying with AT&T, just want it for when I'm overseas)?

they might have some unofficial advice, but i doubt they can tell you to do anything to your iphone (non-ATT mfg) that alters the way it performs and then stand behind it. No harm in going into the store and asking though.

^^AT&T will unlock it for you as long as you're out of your contract period, IIRC.

This is probably fake, but if it's real millions of nerds around the planet are going to have a fit:

I think it's got the old (google) maps icon on there... anyone on iOS6 recognize all those icons?

Will it be available for purchase on the 12th? Or just to pre-order? Or is the 12th just an announcement event?

^^^ Look at the shadow in the pic (which was released by Apple). Either they are announcing the iphone 5 on the 12th or they are announcing a heretofore unknown 12 inch ipad tomorrow.

[Edited on September 4, 2012 at 2:57 PM. Reason : ^ Announcement but I guess you'll be able to pre-order after the press conference]

There's still absolutely nothing about this statement that's not 100% correct, by the way. So thanks for the validation.

Just saying that you're reading a lot into the announcement to call it "officially the iPhone 5" until it's shown on a slide at the presentation or on a product box.

Apple is known to put subtle elements in their announcements which are meant to be read into. Sadly, i would say that it probably will be called the iPhone 5, which I still maintain is fucking retarded and meaningless. Looks like someone should have taken me up on that $100 bet I tried to make.

[Edited on September 4, 2012 at 4:14 PM. Reason : And really, this isn't even remotely subtle. What the hell else would the giant 5 mean?]

I don't make bets with people on the internet or I might have. As far as I know I'll just end up with 100 Laftabucks.

It might not make literal sense for it to be called the iphone 5 from an engineering standpoint, but from a marketing and public perception standpoint that was the best name for it, and it's clearly what everyone wanted to call it from the beginning. Nobody accepted the 4S as truly a new model, it was an upgraded iphone 4, therefore the next one is the iphone 5.

Right, but the same thing could be said for the 3GS, and that one got counted when they were naming the 4.

I'm just saying it doesn't match what they've done in the past, including what they've most recently done with the iPad. I'm still hoping they decide to call it the new iPhone or just the iPhone and the 5 is some sort of way of messing with people.

^No reputable site will call it that, and if they call it that, they're not a reputable site. And you know as much as anyone else that isn't an Apple employee, so I don't know what you think you'll get by asking questions here. Apple will release it when they want to release it, they will announce it when they want to announce it and that's that."

I've already said I will probably be wrong. But the funny thing is, you haven't actually posted anything that I've said that was wrong. Just me stating my opinion that it is fucking retarded to call the 6th phone the iPhone 5. I still 100% believe that too.

If you're going to claim some sort of superiority, at least you could post the quote where I definitively said it wouldn't be called the 5.

You can't even win right.

They didn't decide to name the iPhone 4 the iPhone 4 because they "counted" the 3GS. Despite the fact that the 3G in iPhone 3G was obviously meant to represent a mobile standard most people didn't grasp that fact and Apple understood that. So rather than confuse the heck out of 75% of their customer base by calling the model that followed the iPhone 3G/3GS the iPhone 3 they just let the 3 in 3G become the de facto start of the numbered series. While it may not be "correct" it makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective.

I'm not claiming superiority because I'm a fucking noob in this area. You probably have more tech knowledge in your pinky than I have in my whole brain...but that's not my point.

And you can try and backtrack as much as you want, but you openly tried to get anyone to bet you $100 that it would not be named the iphone5 and basically said that anyone that thought that's what it would be called was an idiot.

I'm not trying to win. Just pointing out that those prior statements make you look like a complete dumbass. And since they speak for themselves...mission accomplished.

How am I backtracking? I am completely standing firm on my original opinion. Even in the face of probable evidence that Apple disagrees with this opinion. That's the exact opposite of backtracking.

How about this line of reasoning:

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5

Seems like a simple pattern. The clear difference between the "S" and the number change is that the latter represents a significant hardware change while the former is mostly internal stuff.

Or simply..."let's name it the iphone5 to piss off that know-it-all prick on t-dub."

Honestly, that's decent reasoning. Would have been nice to see that a few months ago. Maybe you could have taken my $100

You still didn't say how I'm backtracking though.

Please feel free to post or PM me examples of how I've been a retard.

I think you're confusing retard with asshole. One I don't mind being called and freely embrace, the other, you're going to need to provide some evidence.

If at any point you thought an apple iphone release wasn't going to have an alphanumerical designation then you are indeed retarded.

yeah the "new iPad" designation worked out to be a litle confusing for most people. At least that one could be differentiated by calling it the "retina iPad". They should have just stuck with the alphanumerical and call iPad 3 or ipad 2R if they didnt feel like the improvement we worth a generation jump. It will be even more confusing when the next ipad comes out and the"new iPad" isn't so new anymore.

I'll re ask these noob questions:

Quote :
"For clarification purposes...

- Iphone5 will probably be released sometime in the fall.
- it might have a bigger screen
- It will be 4g[lte] on Verizon??

I believe I'm switching over to Verizon as well as over to the iphone...so the last one is more important to me"

The first one has obviously been answered.

I feel like a lot of the articles talking about the release have mentioned a bigger screen. I don't think it's necessary, but I'd prefer a slightly bigger screen. The last question is still the most important...but I assume that won't be answered right away. Was just wondering what the general consensus is.

I'm looking forward to the bigger screen. Although truthfully the biggest thing I'm waiting for is the faster processor that's in the newer iPad plus LTE. I've had my iPhone 4 for 2+ years and it's SLOOOWWWW. I can't wait to make the upgrade and not have shit freeze all the time.

I have a question for you Verizon iPhone users with respect to the whole "talk and use data simultaneously" thing: If you're on a call but also connected to a wifi network, can you browse the web, retrieve emails, etc. whilst staying on your call?

I've been an AT&T iPhone user for many years, but looks like I'm going to have to switch to Verizon soon for work and was just curious.

Yeah, you can use wifi data while on a VZW call.

The new iPhone will probably not have that limitation on VZW, btw.
