That's weird, I wouldn't have considered buying the old nanos, but I almost want to buy one of the new ones. I'm gonna wait and see the price, and the hackability/OS on it, but if it's close to $100, it might just be in impulse buying territory the next time I'm in an Apple store.

i think the initial iphone was truly revolutionary compared with what smartphones were at the time, and the first couple of iterations continued the wow factor as market penetration increased. At this point, we're really looking at incremental improvements rather than anything truly innovative, and that's where expectations should be.9/12/2012 3:14:23 PM |

^^^Sometimes it is great implementation that's important more so than the general idea. Siri was truly innovative IMO, and that was a software change as well as a feature that others had before. But it was the first time I was talking to a computer and didn't feel like i was talking to a computer. It was a stark contrast to the Voice Control function, which was horrendous even by the non-apple standards. On the new phone, not very much to be super excited about hardware-wise. New features of OS6 is exciting, but 3GS and up will get most of the software update features (other than Siri for 3GS and 4). Turn-by-turn navigation looks promising, but mostly because it was sooo behind the bimes as compared to other OS and stand-alone navigators. I hope they blow it out of the park like they have done with Siri. Increase in data transfer and processing speed may allow for better apps though.
^^Adapter is poorly executed IMO. They should have made it wider and less tall (I assume they need the volume inside for A/D processing chips), and it should have mimicked the 4G iPhone shape on the bottom and possibly cradle the new iPhone on top, so it could fit into all the old peripherals.

You're assuming that Apple didn't include a proprietary chip inside each cable/adapter that would stop things like this from happening.
I have no idea why you would assume something like this.

Actually he is spot-on about TJ (and Marshall's, Ross etc) being the best place to buy discounted third-party peripherals for iStuff. I got iPad cover and a set of screen protectors couple weeks ago for less than 1/2 the price of the same exact brand stuff a priced by Best Buy. I also saw that they had a Memorex iPhone dock there for 1/2 of what I paid for the same exact model ON SALE in BB (albeit a few months ago)
But yeah the adapter should have an A/D converter chipset in it, because apparently the new dock connector is all-digital

TJMaxx usually has them available if you just want something cheap. And I assumed that Apple wouldn't do that because I consider Apple to be smarter than Sony.
Plus putting an expensive proprietary chip in the cable would murder all those third party dock manufacturers including the ones that Apple sells. Sure Apple could screw those guys over in order to make an extra few bucks but they didn't do so last time they upgraded the cord so I'm not inclined to think they'll do so now.
Could be wrong though, never underestimate greed.

You are all very stupid and sheeplike, and I will enjoy watching this play out.” Cook followed the iPhone 5 announcement with a brief preview of the company’s updated iPad, which will feature a loud, unchangeable ringtone of Roseanne Barr repeatedly yelling “faggot.”" |

Explain to me how Apple sells third party docks exactly?
And no, you're missing the point. It wouldn't murder third parties at all, it would just force them to pay an Apple tax in order to get the chips/codes whatever, and then pass that tax on to the end users. So instead of seeing $8 cables, you will see $20 ones at best. It's literally the exact same thing that they started doing with video out cables. You used to be able to buy them for $5 from dx.com, and then around iOS 3, Apple started requiring them to authenticate with a chip that only they provided at high cost, which means now the cheapest "official" AV out cable you can buy costs $30. It's basically a way to put a stop to cheap Chinese knockoff cables and make sure Apple gets a cut of everything you buy.
I don't know for sure that they have done this with the new cables, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest either way.]9/12/2012 5:46:20 PM |

The only benefit would have been cheap cables that are already a standard for charging. But you would lose out on so much more. Here's a pretty in-depth article about why they didn't go with it. As much as it's gonna suck to shell out $30 for an extra cable, I do think the trade-off is worth it.
http://www.tuaw.com/2012/06/26/the-whys-and-wherefores-of-a-shrunken-dock-connector/
Quote : | "Why might Apple want to avoid micro-USB? Because charge and sync is about all micro-USB can do, on the face of it; the accessory support, line-level audio out, and video out features the current-day Dock connector sports aren't possible down a four-wire connector. There's a nascent standard called Mobile High-definition Link which can be used for video out but it's rather clumsy, involving three-tailed pass-through cables on existing Android phones. Note that, unlike with Apple's AV connector, the MHL adaptor cannot draw power from the handset and so has to be plugged into a USB charger to function.
It's possible that Apple could address this by using a software layer to multiplex different data types on top of the USB connection, but that would require rather more complex controllers on either side to unpick the data again and do something sensible with it. In fact, something similar is already in place -- several car stereos, for example, connect to the Dock port via a USB cable, then retrieve music, track data, and other information from it. Multiplexing digital 1080p video streams is a harder problem, however, and even if Apple solves it, it still couldn't maintain backwards compatibility with existing Dock-equipped accessories." |

Maybe they're doing the Intel tick-tock thing.
By this time next year, iOS is going to be hurting VERY badly for a major software upgrade.
The hardware design of the phone seems pretty slick, but iOS is getting long in the tooth. It's paradigms were designed before people really knew how to design UIs on high powered multitouch UIs. 9/12/2012 9:15:59 PM |

i've never gotten the hate for the dock connector.
Most households have an Apple device already, so if you need to charge you phone at a friend's place, it's pretty easy.
And it does way more than a regular old USB connector as has already been pointed out. 9/12/2012 9:36:01 PM |

microUSB is universal, not everyone I know has an iphone and wants to $$$ for a $2 connector.
Aside from that, the phone has some really nice qualities (bigger screen, lighter, faster, LTE) and is worth the money. I guess innovation in the smartphone space is declining and cool, new features will be harder to come by.
I really hope Apple could come out with something cool in the tv space, I'd love to get rid of my TWC cable box and replace it with a cool Apple set top box... 9/12/2012 9:52:24 PM |
