I shoot them at my parents house. Hand thrown.
Dont know if that counts, but my current fav is a 20ga semi-auto from Academy Sports (Yildiz). Its their exclusive brand.
Its a champ so far. Occasionally ill use a pump 12ga, Mossberg. I dont do any worse but its certainly less pleasant after awhile.
I could shoot that 20 all day. 9/30/2013 10:37:49 AM |

usually the bottom and top barrels have different chokes. most of the time you'd want a tighter choke on the second shot if the bird is going away from you. 10/1/2013 12:29:29 PM |

Is there really that much of a benefit to those expensive OU's? I don't know much about shotguns and even less about nice ones, seems crazy to me to drop that much cash on one though, wouldn't mind learning why. 10/1/2013 12:46:02 PM |

sporting models are usually a little heavier. of the mind that in the field you carry a lot and shoot a little. on the stand you carry a little and shoot a lot. so a heavier gun will give you a smoother swing and deaden some of the recoil.
$$$ is definitely all about the person. I've scored higher on courses with my 28" field model Red Label against wealthy snobs carrying Silver Pigeons and all kinds of sporting models.
but i'm really enjoying shooting more, so i'd like to find a sporting model with a 30" barrel. will probably look in the used market. 10/1/2013 2:59:21 PM |

The biggest advantage of an O/U is that you can have 2 different chokes on the gun at the same time, and some of them you can decide which barrel shoots first. A gas operated semi-auto will provide excellent recoil reduction, but you can't switch chokes for the second shot before the clay hits the ground.
At a certain point though, the looks of the gun certainly come into play where cost is concerned. The beautiful wood of some guns costs a pretty penny.....add in engraving and other things and the price can skyrocket. 10/1/2013 5:25:38 PM |

If I wanted a target gun I would agree with you. I just can't stand those for some reason though and this is literally just going to used for punching paper and shooting those .22 flip style targets.

the 22/45 versions might be more tolerable for you. mark IIs are harder to find, so you could get a new mark III with a threaded bbl.
and you can get one of those cool mag loaders and blow through hundreds of dollars worth of ammo in no time!
actually, the high price of .22LR is leading to a buyer's market in the used rimfire world.

I prefer semi-auto and just have never been a big fan of bolt or revolver pistols. Ending up getting a P22 to plink with and help provide some easy training for the wife to familiarize herself with guns as well. If you do go for the Sig/Walther 22 or really any modern semi-auto 22 handgun then be prepared for it to be a very picky eater. The majority of them right out of the box with no mods tend to only like higher grain roundnose and/or higher velocity 22's which are a little harder to come by in this market right now. The loose bulk box stuff, hollow points, and standard velocity mostly suck in the fact that they either jam up, don't have enough power to kick the slide all the way back, or just are plain dirty and gum up too quick. All my standard velocity or loose bulk I come across I save for the rifle or sell off to friends. A few people have better luck and theirs works great with anything but it seems to be luck of the draw. My coworkers have a M&P 22 and Sig Mosquito and they feel the same way. 10/3/2013 12:46:26 PM |

S&W M&P 22. It's the only 22lr pistol I'm aware of with 12 rounds magazines. Everything else seems to have 10. I love mine.
Mine loves bulk ammo except for Federal.

the lawyers got ahold of the Mark III. mag safety, internal lock, loaded chamber indicator. just more junk on the gun i don't need. the Mark II has the mag release on the heel, which a lot of folks don't like. I don't mind it and it's actually an advantage if you want to put some big fat thumbrest target grips on there. the Mark I doesn't have last shot hold open and only holds 9 rds, iirc.
i've got a Mark II Target with the 6-7/8" tapered heavy barrel. it jams the nose into the edge of the chamber every once in a while, but for the most part it eats whatever i feed it. shoots standard velocity and high velocity very well.

Y'all with the M&P22, how does the trigger feel compared to other guns?
I really want one because my duty gun is an M&P40, but I haven't jumped on it since it has a manual safety (doesn't fit in some M&P holsters), the backstraps aren't interchangeable, and it's dao hammer fired. 10/3/2013 6:42:49 PM |

I've got a Volquartsen Trigger kit for my Mk 22/45 and it's awesome. A lot of people love how crisp and light the trigger is. The kit is expensive, but I got mine at a pretty good price. You can easily fix the mag "free fall." The Ruger series .22LR pistols are some of the best semi-auto pistols imo. Mag safety is also eliminated from the VQ kit.

ruger sr22 over any of those. sig mosq is the worst. walther and m&p are pretty similar.
this is all based on ammo. ive done a good bit of reading about the various .22 handguns. the ruger is by far the one that shots almost any one of those varietys of .22.
if you got the sig, youd better stick to whatever brand it shoots the best. 10/3/2013 8:58:52 PM |
